Assessment of inter-individual variability in hamstring muscle recovery after a sport-specific sprint training in women and men.

Background: Hamstring muscles are most affected by multiple sprint-based sports as a result of muscle strain during sprinting, leading to reduced performance and increased risk of injury. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to assess inter-individual variability in hamstrings recovery after a sport-specific repeated-sprint training (RST), through sprint-specific markers of muscle recovery and associated muscle damage biomarkers in women and men. Methods: Healthy females (n = 14) and males (n = 15) underwent 10 repeated 40-m sprints with a 3-min rest pause between each repetition. Force-gen

Hamstring rehabilitation in elite track and field athletes: applying the British Athletics Muscle Injury Classification in clinical practice.

RATIONALE: Hamstring injuries are common in elite sports. Muscle injury classification systems aim to provide a framework for diagnosis. The British Athletics Muscle Injury Classification (BAMIC) describes an MRI classification system with clearly defined, anatomically focused classes based on the site of injury: (a) myofascial, (b) muscle-tendon junction or (c) intratendinous; and the extent of the injury, graded from 0 to 4. However, there are no clinical guidelines that link the specific diagnosis (as above) with a focused rehabilitation plan. OBJECTIVE: We present an overview of the gener

The interaction of trunk-load and trunk-position adaptations on knee anterior shear and hamstrings muscle forces during landing.

CONTEXT: Because anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries can occur during deceleration maneuvers, biomechanics research has been focused on the lower extremity kinetic chain. Trunk mass and changes in trunk position affect lower extremity joint torques and work during gait and landing, but how the trunk affects knee joint and muscle forces is not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of added trunk load and adaptations to trunk position on knee anterior shear and knee muscle forces in landing. DESIGN: Crossover study. SETTING: Controlled laboratory environment. PATIENTS OR

The Effect of Therapeutic Exercises and Ultrasound for Rehabilitation of Partially Injured Hamstring Muscles in Elite Soccer (Football) Players: A Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Hamstring injuries are common among athletes, particularly in high-intensity sports such as soccer (football), which involves rapid acceleration and frequent changes of direction. Reported risk factors include neuromuscular fatigue, older age, low muscle strength, and reduced flexibility. Recurrent injuries are often related to previous tears, especially smaller tears in the biceps femoris muscle. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective is to describe the protocol for a randomized controlled trial designed to assess the efficacy of a combined program of therapeutic exercises and therap

Quadriceps and hamstring muscles strength differences in adolescent and adult recreational athletes 6 months after autograft bone-patellar-tendon-bone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Knee muscle strength recovery after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is crucial for a safe return to sport (RTS) but it is poorly described in the adolescent population. Therefore, we compared the knee muscle strength at 6 months post-surgery in adults and adolescents. We hypothesized a greater muscular strength in adolescents 6 months after ACLR. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of 55 adolescents (13-18 years old) and 76 adults (19-39 years old) who underwent ACLR with autograft bone-patellar-tendon-bone (BPTB), subjected to isokinetic tests 6 months aft

Differences in Hamstring Muscle-Tendon Unit Geometry and Function Between Elite Sprint and Jump Athletes and Recreationally Active Controls.

The hamstrings are critical for athletic performance; however, no study has examined differences in hamstring muscle-tendon geometry (cross-sectional area/volume) and muscle typology (proportion of Type I/II fibers) between elite sprinters/jumpers and recreationally active individuals. This study aimed to compare hamstring geometry and typology between these groups and examine how these characteristics relate to sprint and strength performance. Elite sprint and jump athletes (n = 15, 3 female, 21.7 ± 2.2 y, 180.6 ± 9.9 cm, 72.2 ± 9.6 kg) and recreationally active individuals (n = 15, 4 female,

Acute effects of flossing band application on hamstring muscle mechanical properties and stretch tolerance: a randomized controlled crossover trial.

PURPOSE: Flossing bands have been reported to improve hamstring flexibility; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated whether increases in range of motion (ROM) result from changes in muscle mechanical properties, stretch tolerance, or both. METHODS: Sixteen healthy adult males (27.0 ± 2.9 years) participated in a randomized crossover trial with two conditions: a flossing condition (FLOSS), in which a compression elastic band was wrapped around the thigh and participants performed four passive twisting-like movements followed by two sets of 20 active knee exte

Sustainable effectiveness of kinetic chain stretching on active hip flexion movement and muscle activation for hamstring tightness: A preliminary investigation.

BACKGROUND: Conventional hamstring (HAM) stretching therapeutic effects are not substantiable in neuromusculoskeletal conditions with HAM tightness or shortness. We developed a kinetic chain stabilization exercise to provide a more sustainable effectiveness in adults with HAM tightness. However, its therapeutic effects and underlying motor mechanisms remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of traditional active HAM stretching (AHS) and kinetic chain stretching (KCS) on electromyographic (EMG) amplitude and hip flexion range of motion (ROM) in participants with HAM tightness. Association Between the Medial-Lateral Quadriceps and Hamstring Muscle Thickness and the Knee Kinematics and Kinetics During Single-Leg Landing.

BACKGROUND: Muscle thickness can influence the joint kinematics and/or kinetics during dynamic activities. The relationship between the muscle thickness of individual quadriceps and hamstrings or medial-to-lateral thigh muscle thickness ratio and the knee kinematics/kinetics with respect to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk remains unclear. HYPOTHESIS: Higher medial-to-lateral thigh muscle thickness ratio would be associated with lower knee valgus angle/moment and lower tibial internal rotation angle/moment during single-leg landing. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional. LEVEL OF EVIDEN

Associations of hamstring and triceps surae muscle spasticity and stance phase gait kinematics in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy.

Clinical decisions on interventions to improve function in children with cerebral palsy (CP) are based, in part, on hypothesized interactions amongst physical signs of CP and functional deficits. However, a knowledge gap exists regarding associations between spasticity and gait function. This study quantified associations of hamstring and triceps surae spasticity with hip, knee and ankle CP gait patterns. This is a cohort study of children and adolescents [n = 51; 31 male; 20 female; spastic diplegia; Gross Motor Function Classification System I (n = 23) and II (n = 28)] who participated in a

Alternative assessment of knee joint muscle balance of soccer players through total work-based hamstring: quadriceps ratios.

Isokinetic hamstring-to-quadriceps (H:Q) ratios are frequently used to assess knee muscle strength imbalances and risk of injuries/re-injuries. The use of peak torque (PT) or total work (TW) to estimate joint stability may lead to different results because of the differences between these two neuromuscular variables. Thus, the current study aimed to compare the conventional and functional H:Q ratios calculated by PT and TW. Ninety-three male professional soccer players from Brazilian first division teams performed isokinetic concentric and eccentric contractions of the quadriceps and the hamst

The effect of kinesio taping versus stretching techniques on muscle soreness, and flexibility during recovery from nordic hamstring exercise.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of static stretching, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching, or kinesio taping (KT) on muscle soreness and flexibility during recovery from exercise. Sixty-five females were randomly assigned to four groups: PNF stretching (n = 15), static stretching (n = 16), KT (n = 17), and control (n = 17). All participants performed nordic hamstring exercise (5 sets of 8 repetitions). In all groups, hamstring flexibility at 24 h and 48 h was not changed from baseline (p > .05). The muscle soreness was measured higher at 48 h post-ex

The effects of multiple daily applications of ice to the hamstrings on biochemical measures, signs, and symptoms associated with exercise-induced muscle damage.

There is inconclusive evidence for the effectiveness of cryotherapy for the treatment of exercised-induced muscle damage (EIMD). Small sample sizes and treatment applications that did not correspond to evidence-based practice are limitations in previous studies that may have contributed to these equivocal findings. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of daily multiple applications of ice on EIMD throughout the 72-hour recovery period, an icing protocol that more closely resembles current clinical practice. Thirty-three subjects were assigned to either the cryotherapy gro
