Morphological study of 70 cases of brucellosis in rabbits caused by Brucella suis.

Seventy cases of morphologically developed cases or brucellosis in hares are described. Twenty-five of the cases were tested by the cultivation methods and the causative agent was identified as Brucella suis. In females the authors found 57 cases, in males 13 cases. Brucellosis of hares was characterized by a chronical course, by a conspicuous local progression, and by a predominance of pathological changes in the reproductive organs of both sexes. Males showed changes mainly on testes. Nodal, solitary as well as multiple lesions in the parametrium near the uterine wall were particularly typic

Investigating an airborne tularemia outbreak, Germany.

In November 2005, an outbreak of tularemia occurred among 39 participants in a hare hunt in Hesse, Germany. Previously reported tularemia outbreaks in Germany dated back to the 1950s. We conducted a retrospective cohort study among participants and investigated the environment to identify risk factors for infection. Ten participants had serologic evidence of acute Francisella tularensis infection; 1 other participant died before laboratory confirmation was obtained. Presence within 5 meters of the place where disemboweled hares were rinsed with a water hose was the risk factor most strongly as

Transformation of catechol coupled to redox alteration of humic acids and the effects of Cu and Fe cations.

Humic substances are reactive during redox alteration. However, the role of this reactivity in the transformation of organic compounds and in carbon cycling in the environment is still unclear. Here, we used 14C-radioactive tracer to study abiotic transformation and humification of catechol, a representative of naturally occurring monomeric phenols and phenolic pollutants, in suspensions of humic acids (HAs) at original and H2/Pd-reduced redox states with flux of air (HAorg-Air and HAred-Air, respectively) or N2 (HAorg-N2 and HAred-N2, respectively) for 20 min in absence and presence of Cu(II)

A serological survey of antibodies against Francisella tularensis in some Swedish mammals.

Tularemia occurs in Sweden as an epizootic among the mountain hare. Little is known about the occurrence of the disease in other animals in this country. For this reason serum samples from 28 cattle, 83 moose, 110 beavers and 97 mountain hares were investigated for the presence of antibodies against Francisella tularensis. The antibody levels against F. tularensis found in moose and cattle were generally low and also in a low incidence. This indicates that these species are not susceptible to tularemia and not involved in the epizootiology of this disease. Beaver titres were found to vary from

Isolation of Brucella suis biovar 2 from a wild boar in the Abruzzo Region of Italy.

A female wild boar, aged approximately two years, was found dead by local veterinary services in Pianola di Roio in L'Aquila Province situated in the Abruzzo Region of central Italy. The carcass was submitted to the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell'Abruzzo e del Molise 'G. Caporale' in Teramo for necropsy. Brucella suis biovar 2 was isolated from submandibular lymph nodes. This is the first report of isolation of B. suis in the Abruzzo Region. Several authors agreed in the past on the hypothesis that B. suis biovar 2 had been introduced into Italy through the importation of hares fro

Epidemiological survey and risk factors associated with Sarcoptes scabiei in wild lagomorphs in Spanish Mediterranean ecosystems.

Although mortality caused by Sarcoptes scabiei has been reported in European wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis), there is a lack of detailed information regarding the exposure of wild lagomorph species to this parasite. Here, we aimed to determine the seroprevalence and potential risk factors associated with S. scabiei exposure in European wild rabbits and Iberian hares in Mediterranean ecosystems of southern Spain. Between 2018/2019 and 2021/2022 hunting seasons, serum samples from 464 wild rabbits and 132 Iberian hares were collected from 100 hunting gro

Significant Contribution of Solid Organic Matter for Hydroxyl Radical Production during Oxygenation.

Dark formation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) from soil/sediment oxygenation has been increasingly reported, and solid Fe(II) is considered as the main electron donor for O2 activation. However, the role of solid organic matter (SOM) in •OH production is not clear, although it represents an important electron pool in the subsurface. In this study, •OH production from oxygenation of reduced solid humic acid (HAred) was investigated at pH 7.0. •OH production is linearly correlated with the electrons released from HAred suspension. Solid HAred transferred electrons rapidly to O2 via the surface-reduc

The epidemiology of louping-ill, a tick borne infection of red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus).

The epidemiology of louping-ill in red grouse was studied in northern Britain concentrating on the possible role of other species and mechanisms of disease persistence. This tick borne viral disease caused heavy mortality in red grouse, particularly chicks. Louping-ill induced mortality reduced the strength of the density dependence that generates the tendency of grouse populations to cycle and in some populations may cause population sinks. Four routes of transmission were examined and non-viraemic transmission of virus between ticks cofeeding on hares was considered significant. Field data s

Hyaluronan and its receptors in mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Hyaluronan (HA) is a prominent extracellular matrix component undergoing continuous production and degradation. Increased HA levels have been described in a variety of tumors. The objective of this study was to examine the staining patterns of HA and two of its associated receptors (CD44 and HARE) in relation to the metastatic potential of mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MC). Immunohistochemical staining of preserved surgical specimens was used. METHODS: Tissues from 12 patients with a histologic diagnosis of salivary MC (10 parotid, one submandibular gland, one minor salivary gland) we

Species differences in glycerol-3-phosphate metabolism reveals trade-offs between metabolic adaptations and cell proliferation.

The temperate climate-adapted brown hare (Lepus europaeus) and the cold-adapted mountain hare (Lepus timidus) are closely related and interfertile species. However, their skin fibroblasts display distinct gene expression profiles related to fundamental cellular processes. This indicates important metabolic divergence between the two species. Through targeted metabolomics and metabolite tracing, we identified species-specific variations in glycerol 3-phosphate (G3P) metabolism. G3P is a key metabolite of the G3P shuttle, which transfers reducing equivalents from cytosolic NADH to the mitochondr

High levels of anti-Phlebotomus perniciosus saliva antibodies in different vertebrate hosts from the re-emerging leishmaniosis focus in Madrid, Spain.

From July 2009 to date, a leishmaniosis outbreak has occurred in the south-west of the Madrid region (Spain) and has already accounted for more than 450 human cases in an area that comprises a population of approximately 500,000. The causative agent is Leishmania infantum and the main vector in the area is Phlebotomus perniciosus. Although canine leishmaniosis prevalence in the focus is not higher than the average in the Madrid region, a wild reservoir - the hare - has been implicated. In this study, we examined the exposure of Leishmania reservoirs in the area: dogs, hares, and wild rabbits t

Detection of Leishmania infantum and identification of blood meals in Phlebotomus perniciosus from a focus of human leishmaniasis in Madrid, Spain.

Since 2010, the number of cases of both human visceral leishmaniasis and cutaneous leishmaniasis in southwestern Madrid region (Spain) and more specifically in the town of Fuenlabrada has increased. Direct xenodiagnosis of leishmaniasis proved that hares (Lepus granatensis) from this focus are able to infect with Leishmania infantum colonized Phlebotomus perniciosus. To a better understanding of this focus of leishmaniasis, we conducted an entomological survey using CDC light traps, at the end of the seasonal transmission period of 2011 before the beginning of control measures of the disease,

Seroepidemiology of Coxiella burnetii among wildlife in Nova Scotia.

We used an indirect immunofluorescence assay to determine antibody titers to phase I and phase II Coxiella burnetii antigens in serum samples from a variety of wild animals in Nova Scotia. Forty-nine percent of the hares, 16.5% of the moose, 7.1% of the raccoons, and 1.5% of the white-tailed deer tested had antibodies to phase I antigen. We conclude that there is extensive infection of the hare population by C. burnetii, with lesser degrees of infection of the moose, raccoon, and deer population.

The Golden Rule and the potentiality principle: future persons and contingent interests.

Duties to future persons are central to numerous key ethical issues including contraception, abortion, genetic selection, treatment of the environment, and population control. Nevertheless, we still seem to be lacking Parfit's 'Theory X', a general theory of beneficence whose appropriateness extends to future generations. Starting from the Golden Rule (TGR), R.M. Hare purportedly derived counterintuitive duties to potential people and 'the potentiality principle'. However, I argue that Hare's derivation involves a hidden and unjustifiable extension from TGR, and show how the most plausible for

Efficacies of prevention and control measures applied during an outbreak in Southwest Madrid, Spain.

Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease of worldwide distribution, currently present in 98 countries. Since late 2010, an unusual increase of human visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis cases has been observed in the south-western Madrid region, totaling more than 600 cases until 2015. Some hosts, such as human, domestic dog and cat, rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), and hare (Lepus granatensis), were found infected by the parasite of this disease in the area. Hares were described as the most important reservoir due to their higher prevalence, capacity to infect the vector, and presence of the sa

The results of the study on the role of some wild mammals and birds as feeding sources of for ticks Hyalomma marginatum, the main vectors of Crimean haemorrhagic fever virus in the Stavropol Territory, in the preimago phases of their development are presented. These phases (larvae and nymphs) were found on rooks, hooded crows, partridges, European brown hares and eared hedgehogs. The examination of domestic fowl resulted in finding larvae and nymphs in small amounts on turkeys. According to the data of the epizootological survey carried out in summer and autumn of 2000 in the Stavropol Territo

[Brucella suis--a little-known zoonotic agent].

Brucellosis is a rare but serious bacterial zoonosis. Officially, the Czech Republic is among countries that are free from brucellosis in livestock. In the country, sporadic imported human infections may occur, caused by e.g. Brucella melitensis. In wild hare populations, however, rare cases of infection caused by Brucella suis are still observed, potentially threatening humans. The short communication reports two cases of hare brucellosis in Moravia, Czech Republic, and experiences with isolate identification by the MALDI-TOF method.

Geographical cluster of renal hamartomas in wild urban white-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus townsendii).

To understand diseases of wild urban jackrabbits (Lepus townsendii), we autopsied 130 individuals that died near roadways in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Renal hamartomas were present in 8 of 130 hares (6.2%; 95% confidence interval: 3.2%-11.7%). Most were unilateral (7/8); one case had bilateral lesions. Hamartomas are benign, tumor-like lesions comprised of normal tissue elements in abnormal amounts and arrangements. Macroscopically, hamartomas were white, tan, or pink-red, well-circumscribed, singular or multilobular, expansile nodules in the cortex or corticomedullary junction. Histologically

Michael Faraday's "loss of memory" revisited.

In the mid-1970s, the psychiatrist Edward Hare published two accounts of Michael Faraday's memory symptoms, based upon which he suggested the diagnostic possibilities of an amnesic syndrome related to a transient ischemic attack in the vertebrobasilar cerebrovascular system. This article revisits the contemporary evidence of Faraday's letters and the notes of his physician, Peter Mere Latham, and considers subsequent responses to and shortcomings of Hare's analysis. In light of more recent conceptualizations of memory disorders, a new formulation for Faraday's memory symptoms is suggested: nam
