PURPOSE: Conversion of Hashimoto Thyroiditis (HT) to Graves’ disease (GD) is uncommon. Patients experiencing this immunological transition have a milder form of hyperthyroidism. Nevertheless, US features, clinical course and outcome of thyroid function during long term follow up of these patients have not been systemically characterized so far. METHODS: 41 patients with conversion from HT to GD were compared with 214 patients with GD. Demographic, clinical and hormonal data as well as thyroid ultrasound (US) features, remission and relapse rates were evaluated. RESULTS: TSH concentrations were

The physical and/or electrical properties of the peptide-binding pockets of Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) class II molecules vary depending on their amino acid sequence, influencing peptide-binding affinity. Previous studies have reported associations between HLA-DRB1 amino acid polymorphisms and susceptibility to Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's disease (HD). We hypothesized that polymorphisms in the peptide-binding region of HLA-DRB1 contribute to disease development and prognosis. This study investigated associations between HLA-DRB1 amino acid polymorphisms and both the development and

Biermer's disease is an autoimmune disorder characterized by atrophic gastritis leading to vitamin B12 deficiency, often revealed late due to non-specific symptoms. It may be associated with other autoimmune pathologies, notably Hashimoto's thyroiditis, as part of a type 3b autoimmune polyendocrinopathy (AIP). We report the case of a 44-year-old female patient, followed for autoimmune hypothyroidism, in whom vitamin B12 deficiency was detected. The patient showed no suggestive signs such as glossitis, paresthesia, or other neurological abnormalities. Investigations confirmed Biermer's disease,

The diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is particularly challenging because its heterogeneous clinical presentations mimic other rapidly progressive dementias and neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Hashimoto's encephalopathy, autoimmune encephalitis, atypical Alzheimer's disease). Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is the most sensitive neuroimaging sequence for diagnosing CJD. However, early magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings may be subtle or evolving, and autoimmune etiologies often remain in the differential. Therefore, empiric corticosteroids are reserved for cases in which a

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: In the scientific world, the nutritional needs of persons with Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroid disease are discussed, and there is a lot of interest in the autoimmune protocol (AIP). The aim of the study was to check the effects of AIP on thyroid parameters in euthyroid patients with Hashimoto's disease.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Among 28 people with Hashimoto's (including 1 male) the consumption of nutrients, anthropometrics, symptoms of the disease, values of thyroid parameters: FT3, FT4, TSH, thyroid ultrasound and autoimmune aTPO, aTG were analyzed before and after

BACKGROUND: Hashimoto's disease has reportedly been associated with stroke; however, cerebrovascular morphology and clinical course remain poorly documented. The present study aimed to determine the angiographic features and clinical outcomes of intracranial arterial stenosis (IAS) associated with Hashimoto's disease in a retrospective cohort.
METHODS: Overall, 107 adult patients with IAS were screened for anti-thyroid antibodies; of these, 26 patients tested positive. The 42 affected hemispheres were classified into subgroups according to the steno-occlusion site and the development of abnor

Circadian disruption has been linked with immune-related morbidities including autoimmune diseases. PERIOD3 (PER3) clock gene is a key player in the mammalian circadian system. This study evaluated the possible association of PER3 rs2797685 (G/A) polymorphism and susceptibility of autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD) and assessed if this SNP contributes to disease characteristics and serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). The PER3 rs2797685 (G/A) polymorphism was assessed in 125 patients with AITD [Graves' disease (GD), 69; Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), 56] and

A 37-year-old housewife presented with generalised fatigue, palpitations and weight loss over the past 3 months. Physical examination revealed signs of hyperthyroidism. Thyroid function tests confirmed the presence of thyrotoxicosis. Pertechnetate radionuclide imaging of the thyroid showed diffusely increased radiotracer uptake consistent with Graves' disease and a cold nodule in the right lobe. Needle aspiration from the nodule yielded evidence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The patient also tested strongly positive for antithyroid peroxidase antibodies. Simultaneous laboratory evaluation reveal

A 73-year-old Japanese man with Hashimoto's disease and diabetes mellitus received regular medical checkups for type 2 diabetes care. Blood tests indicated macrocytic anemia (red blood cell count, 279×104 /μL; hemoglobin, 12.2 g/dL; hematocrit, 34.0%; mean corpuscular volume, 121.9 fL). The laboratory data demonstrated a normal folic acid level with a low vitamin B12 level. An endoscopic examination indicated no signs of gastric or intestinal bleeding. Positive results for anti-intrinsic factor antibodies were strongly suggestive of pernicious anemia. The patient refused cobalamin injections t

Minimal-change glomerular disease, sarcoidosis and autoimmune thyroid disease rarely occur in the same patient. We herein report a patient in which minimal-change glomerular disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis developed during the treatment of sarcoidosis with steroids. A 66-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with symptoms of nephrotic syndrome. Nine months before admission, she was diagnosed as having ocular and pulmonary sarcoidosis, for which prednisolone at an initial dose of 40 mg/day was started. When the dose of prednisolone was tapered to 20 mg/day, she noticed swelling of th

Riedel's disease (RD) is a rare form of chronic thyroiditis, predominantly characterised by fibrosis which may involve neighbouring tissues and organs. Hashimoto's disease (HD), on the other hand, is fairly common. Clinical differentiation between these diseases is often difficult, and the results of diagnostic imaging, laboratory tests and cytology studies are often similar. We report the case of a female patient with Riedel's thyroiditis displaying clinical, laboratory and radiological traits of both diseases. A 44 year-old Caucasian female was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. A fine-needle as

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 49-year-old man presented with a four-week history of fatigue and physical weakness. He was of slender build (BMI 19,5 kg/m (2)) and pale. He also had vitiligo. Diabetes mellitus type 1 and Hashimoto thyreoiditis had been previously diagnosed.
INVESTIGATIONS: Laboratory tests revealed iron deficiency anemia with depleted iron reserves (hemoglobin 5,9 g/dl; normal range 14,0 - 18,0). Vitamin B (12) and folic acid were also low. A probable cause was thought to be malabsorption. Antibodies against endomysium and tissue transglutaminase were elevated. Esophagogas

Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and Graves' disease (GD) are two opposite poles in the spectrum of autoimmune thyroid disease. On one extreme, HT or Chronic Lymphocytic thyroiditis (CLT) courses, as its name implies, with lymphocytic infiltrates replacing thyroid follicles, resulting in a loss of hormone-producing cells and, thus, primary hypothyroidism. On the other extreme, GD is characterized by primary hyperthyroidism due to stimulating autoantibodies against thyroid-stimulating hormone receptors (TSHRs) localized on thyrocytes' membranes of intact thyroid follicles. The presence of HT after

Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome (MRS) is a rare disorder of unknown etiology. MRS is classically defined as a triad of recurrent orofacial edema, relapsing paralysis of the facial nerve, and fissured tongue. The authors present the case of a 52-year-old woman with orofacial swelling and facial pain attacks. The patient reported to suffer of hypothyroidism and laboratory findings disclosed free triiodothyronine (FT(3)), free thyroxine (FT(4)), and thyrotropin (TSH) altered. Endocrinological consult led to the diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Antithyroper-oxidase antibodies (anti-TPO) were hi

We report four cases of Graves' disease that developed after painful Hashimoto's thyroiditis. All were middle-aged women, who had high titers of anti-thyroid antibodies and thyrotoxicosis at the onset of painful Hashimoto's thyroiditis. After 2 to 7 years, they developed Graves' disease with positive antibody against the thyrotropin receptor. Their clinical courses of Graves' disease went favorably due to the treatment with antithyroid drug or radioactive iodine therapy. Painful Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an atypical variant of Hashimoto's thyroiditis and is one form of destructive thyroiditis
