A neuropsychological approach to the assessment of adults with learning disabilities in vocational rehabilitation.

A description of cognitive, academic, and personality characteristics of adults with learning disabilities (LD) referred for services through the state/federal vocational rehabilitation system is presented. This study builds on the work of Minskoff, Hawks, Steidle, and Hoffmann (1989) and validates their conclusions that, as a group, adults with LD participating in vocational rehabilitation are homogeneous relative to other groups of adults with LD. By taking a neuropsychological approach to the assessment process, the current study further subdivided the assessment categories described by Min

A new method for augmenting short time series, with application to pain events in sickle cell disease.

Researchers across different fields, including but not limited to ecology, biology, and healthcare, often face the challenge of sparse data. Such sparsity can lead to uncertainties, estimation difficulties, and potential biases in modeling. Here we introduce a novel data augmentation method that combines multiple sparse time series datasets when they share similar statistical properties, thereby improving parameter estimation and model selection reliability. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach through validation studies comparing Hawkes and Poisson processes, followed by applicat

Gravitational Pair Production and Black Hole Evaporation.

We present a new avenue to black hole evaporation using a heat-kernel approach analogous as for the Schwinger effect. Applying this method to an uncharged massless scalar field in a Schwarzschild spacetime, we show that spacetime curvature takes a similar role as the electric field strength in the Schwinger effect. We interpret our results as local pair production in a gravitational field and derive a radial production profile. The resulting emission peaks near the unstable photon orbit. Comparing the particle number and energy flux to the Hawking case, we find both effects to be of similar or

West Nile virus outbreak in captive and wild raptors, Czech Republic, 2018.

West Nile virus lineage 2 (WNV-2) was detected in the brain of 17 goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) that succumbed to neuroinvasive disease in the Czech Republic during 2018: twelve birds were captive and five wild. Furthermore, two wild sparrowhawks (Accipiter nisus) and three other captive birds of prey (golden eagle Aquila chrysaetos, hybrid saker falcon Falco cherrug × F. rusticolus and Harris's hawk Parabuteo unicinctus) also died due to WNV encephalitis. The 2018 outbreak in Czech raptors clearly reflects a new epidemiological situation and indicates an increasing risk of both raptor and hum

[A rare differential diagnosis of a somatoform autonomous disorder of the gastro-intestinal tract: the hepatocellular liver carcinoma in childhood].

OBJECTIVES: A severely ill 11-year-old boy came to the child psychiatric outpatient department of the Fachkrankenhaus Neckargemünd with the diagnosis of a somatoform disorder. Main symptoms included nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. He wished to be examined in order to enter the Stephen-Hawking-School for physically handicapped children in the town of Neckargemünd. RESULTS: Manual examination revealed a palpable mass in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, which was imaged as a tumour of the liver. During the subsequent operation, a 500 ml hepatocellular carcinoma was found.

Long-term trends of second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) show widespread contamination of a bird-eating predator, the Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) in Britain.

Second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) are widely used to control rodents around the world. However, contamination by SGARs is detectable in many non-target species, particularly carnivorous mammals or birds-of-prey that hunt or scavenge on poisoned rodents. The SGAR trophic transfer pathway via rodents and their predators/scavengers appears widespread, but little is known of other pathways of SGAR contamination in non-target wildlife. This is despite the detection of SGARs in predators that do not eat rodents, such as specialist bird-eating hawks. We used a Bayesian modelling fr

Unintentional wildlife poisoning and proposals for sustainable management of rodents.

In Europe, bromadiolone, an anticoagulant rodenticide authorized for plant protection, may be applied intensively in fields to control rodents. The high level of poisoning of wildlife that follows such treatments over large areas has been frequently reported. In France, bromadiolone has been used to control water voles (Arvicola terrestris) since the 1980s. Both regulation and practices of rodent control have evolved during the last 15 years to restrict the quantity of poisoned bait used by farmers. This has led to a drastic reduction of the number of cases of poisoned wildlife reported by the

Experimental demonstration of the supersonic-subsonic bifurcation in the circular jump: a hydrodynamic white hole.

We provide an experimental demonstration that the circular hydraulic jump represents a hydrodynamic white hole or gravitational fountain (the time reverse of a black hole) by measuring the angle of the Mach cone created by an object in the "supersonic" inner flow region. We emphasize the general character of this gravitational analogy by showing theoretically that the white hole horizon constitutes a stationary and spatial saddle-node bifurcation within dynamical-systems theory. We also demonstrate that the inner region has a "superluminal" dispersion relation, that is, that the group velocity

[Dysphagia - from Pathophysiology to Treatment].

More than 5 million persons in Germany suffer from swallowing disorders (dysphagia), predominantly oropharyngeal dysphagia. Due to the demographic changes in our population, the prevalence rates are expected to increase. Multiple conditions may be the cause of dysphagia and dysphagia may lead to various symptoms. Esophageal dysphagia is predominantly accompanied by regurgitation, vomiting, pain and foreign body sensation in the esophageal region. Oropharyngeal dysphagia is characterized by cough, hawking and airway disease. In some patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia, symptoms may be complet

[The Tractatus de austuribus and its adoption by Albertus Magnus].

Probably in the 60s of the 13th century Albert the Great (dagger 1280) terminated his De animalibus libri XXVI, mainly a commentary on Aristotle's Animals but a milestone in medieval zoology. In the extensive chapter De falconibus of the 23rd book, which was written around 1250 and is probably the oldest part of the whole treatise, Albert used medieval tracts on birds of prey as source material. In the article one of these tracts, the anonymous Tractatus de austuribus on the healing of hawks, is analysed and for the first time presented in a critical synoptic edition (after the Codex unicus Be

Poisoning of wildlife with anticoagulant rodenticides in New York.

From 1971 through 1997, we documented 51 cases (55 individual animals) of poisoning of non-target wildlife in New York (plus two cases in adjoining states) (USA) with anticoagulant rodenticides--all but two of these cases occurred in the last 8 yrs. Brodifacoum was implicated in 80% of the incidents. Diphacinone was identified in four cases, bromadiolone in three cases (once in combination with brodifacoum), and chlorophacinone and coumatetralyl were detected once each in the company of brodifacoum. Warfarin accounted for the three cases documented prior to 1989, and one case involving a bald

Valid and accepted novel bacterial taxa isolated from non-domestic animals and taxonomic revisions published in 2023.

Continued investigation into the bacteria associated with non-domestic animals provides important information for recognizing normal flora, assessing the health status of these unique species of animals, and identifying new or emerging pathogens of concern. In this summary of novel taxa and taxonomic revisions, considerable additions have been made toward understanding fecal and mucosal flora in multiple wild animal species. In addition, novel pathogenic bacteria are discussed, including multiple Chlamydia spp. causing disease in a hawk and crocodile, two Corynebacterium spp. causing oral lesi

Point Process Models for the Spread of Coccidioidomycosis in California.

Coccidioidomycosis is an infectious disease of humans and other mammals that has seen a recent increase in occurrence in the southwestern United States, particularly in California. A rise in cases and risk to public health can serve as the impetus to apply newly developed methods that can quickly and accurately predict future caseloads. The recursive and Hawkes point process models with various triggering functions were fit to the data and their goodness of fit evaluated and compared. Although the point process models were largely similar in their fit to the data, the recursive point process m

Raptor mortality due to West Nile virus in the United States, 2002.

West Nile virus (WNV) has affected many thousands of birds since it was first detected in North America in 1999, but the overall impact on wild bird populations is unknown. In mid-August 2002, wildlife rehabilitators and local wildlife officials from multiple states began reporting increasing numbers of sick and dying raptors, mostly red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) and great horned owls (Bubo virginianus). Commonly reported clinical signs were nonspecific and included emaciation, lethargy, weakness, inability to perch, fly or stand, and nonresponse to danger. Raptor carcasses from 12 stat

Hormonal and behavioral responses to stress in lactating and non-lactating female common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).

In several mammalian species, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and behavioral responses to stressors are down-regulated in lactating females, possibly preventing stress-induced disruptions of maternal care. Experimental elevations of HPA axis hormones have been found to inhibit maternal behavior in lactating common marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus), raising the question of whether lactating female marmosets also have blunted endogenous responses to stress. Therefore, we compared HPA and behavioral responses to standardized stressors in reproductively experienced female common marmosets

Understanding "societies of near-equals".

Egalitarian societies are defined as those of near-equals, yet some have confused the concept to be analogous with equality and used the absence of evidence of truly equal societies to reject the concept altogether. Stibbard-Hawkes and von Rueden seek to correct course, highlighting that egalitarian societies, properly defined, do exist and that by focusing on process, we can come to learn about the factors that influence variation in social organization. Their synthesis provides a nuanced image of egalitarian societies and offers direction for future research focused on examining the emergenc

When neuromuscular disorders become stars.

This retrospective study identified 125 audio-visual works from cinema and television, including films, TV series, and documentaries, depicting neuromuscular disorders since 1910. Motor neuron disorders, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), had the highest representation (69.3%), followed by myopathies (20%). The predominant genre was documentary (48%), which offered more factual representation than fictional works. ALS was overrepresented due to its dramatic nature and association with notable figures, including the American baseball player Lou Gehrig and British theoretical physici

Challenges and Controversies Concerning Neisseria gonorrhoeae-Neutrophil Interactions in Pathogenesis.

The bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ngo) is the main cause of the sexually transmitted infection gonorrhea. The global incidence of 87 million new Ngo infections each year, rising infection rates, and the emergence of Ngo strains that are resistant to all clinically recommended antibiotics have raised the specter of untreatable infections (M. Unemo, H. S. Seifert, E. W. Hook, III, S. Hawkes, et al., Nat Rev Dis Primers 5:79, 2019, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41572-019-0128-6). Experimental infection of five species of raptors and of hooded crows with Francisella tularensis biovar palaearctica.

Sixteen raptors and three hooded crows were infected experimentally with Francisella tularensis biovar palaearctica. The birds were infected parenterally or per os. One goshawk, one sparrow hawk and one hooded crow died during the experimental period, and the remaining 16 birds were killed 14-77 days after the first infection. Francisella tularensis was not isolated from any bird. Antibody levels against F. tularensis measured in nine birds varied from 0 to 1:1,280. In one goshawk with a titer of 1:1,280, positive fluorescent antibody reactions against F. tularensis were seen in the liver and
