Mandatory helmet legislation and children's exposure to cycling.

BACKGROUND: Mandatory helmet legislation for cyclists is the subject of much debate. Opponents of helmet legislation suggest that making riders wear helmets will reduce ridership, thus having a negative overall impact on health. Mandatory bicycle helmet legislation for children was introduced in Ontario, Canada in October 1995. The objective of our study was to examine trends in children's cycling rates before and after helmet legislation in one health district. SETTING: Child cyclists were observed at 111 preselected sites (schools, parks, residential streets, and major intersections) in the

Wearing a Surgical Vest With a Sterile Surgical Helmet System Decreases Contamination of the Surgical Field.

BACKGROUND: Sterile surgical helmet systems are frequently utilized in total knee arthroplasty procedures to protect the surgeon while maintaining a comfortable working environment. However, common helmet systems pressurize the space between the surgical gown and the surgeon's skin. In gowns with a back seam, this may allow contaminated skin particles to escape into the surgical field. By measuring bacterial colony-forming units (CFUs), this study sought to determine if occlusion of the open back seam reduced the risk of potential contamination. METHODS: First, qualitative analysis depicting

Facial Trauma Prevention in Adults and Children.

Facial trauma is a growing public health concern with substantial physical, psychological, and financial consequences. Injuries arise from multiple causes, including motor vehicle accidents, falls, assaults, and sports, and their impact differs across age, gender, and social groups. Older adults are increasingly affected by fall-related trauma, while women are more likely to experience violence-related injuries. Children and individuals with disabilities also face unique risks that require targeted approaches. Preventive strategies such as helmet use, seatbelts, fall-prevention programs, and e

What every dentist needs to know about the risk of pickleball-related injuries to the head and neck.

Since the inception of pickleball in 1965, approximately 19% of the US population has engaged in the sport. Although pickleball was initially intended as a safe activity for children, the vast majority of players are older adults. Within the last 5 years, there has been a conspicuous surge in pickleball-related injuries. The objective of this review is to explore the literature on head and neck injuries associated with pickleball. In studies published from 2018 through October 2025, the reported incidence of head and neck injuries arising from participation in pickleball activities ranged from

A study on the diagnostic support system of the repetitive brain concussion based on the reconstruction analysis of the accident.

In this paper the effectiveness of the support system which predicts the risk of the repetitive brain concussion is studied biomechanically. In the risk prediction system, the accident that caused the concussion is reconstructed by analyzing the game video via multibody dynamics and the resulting brain injury is calculated in detail by the finite element method. In order to calculate the aggravation of the brain injury by the repeated brain concussion, the following two methods are examined. In the first method, the material properties of the part of the brain damaged by the1st impact are chan

Influence of familiarity with traffic regulations on delivery riders' e-bike crashes and helmet use: Two mediator ordered logit models.

Micro-mobility vehicles such as electric bicycles, or e-bikes, are becoming one of the essential transportation modes in metropolitan areas, and most deliveries in large cities are dependent on them. Due to the e-bike's popularity and vulnerability, e-bike crash occurrence has become a major traffic safety problem in many cities across the world; finding the most important human factors affecting e-bike safety has thus been an important recent issue in traffic safety analysis. Since delivery riders are a key group of e-bike users, and since helmet use plays a crucial role in reducing the sever

Changes in shared and private e-scooter use in Brisbane, Australia and their safety implications.

Shared electric scooter (e-scooter) schemes debuted in US cities in 2017 and have spread to many cities worldwide. Rider inexperience and the inexperience of other road users in interacting with e-scooters may be contributing to injuries. Shared e-scooters came to Brisbane, Australia, in November 2018 and our observational study in February 2019 found a high level of non-compliance with regulations by riders of shared, but not private, e-scooters. This paper examines whether e-scooter safety improved over time by comparing the numbers and behaviors of shared and private e-scooter riders with a

Development of the STAR Evaluation System for Assessing Bicycle Helmet Protective Performance.

Cycling is a leading cause of mild traumatic brain injury in the US. While bicycle helmets help protect cyclists who crash, limited biomechanical data exist differentiating helmet protective capabilities. This paper describes the development of a bicycle helmet evaluation scheme based in real-world cyclist accidents and brain injury mechanisms. Thirty helmet models were subjected to oblique impacts at six helmet locations and two impact velocities. The summation of tests for the analysis of risk (STAR) equation, which condenses helmet performance from a range of tests into a single value, was
