BACKGROUND OR AIM: Despite guidelines and the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-III beta) criteria, the diagnosis of common chronic headache disorders can be challenging for non-expert clinicians. The aim of the review was to identify headache classification tools that could be used by a non-expert clinician to classify common chronic disorders in primary care.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review of studies validating diagnostic and classification headache tools published between Jan 1988 and June 2016 from key databases: MEDLINE, ASSIA, Embase, Web of

The primary headache disorders, which include migraine, cluster headache and tension-type headache, are among the most common diseases and leading causes of disability worldwide. The available treatment options for primary headache disorders have unsatisfactory rates of efficacy, tolerability and patient adherence. In this Review, we discuss promising new approaches for the prevention of primary headache disorders, such as monoclonal antibodies targeting calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) or its receptor, and small-molecule CGRP receptor antagonists. Neuromodulation approaches employing no

Patients with orofacial pains are generally treated by physicians. A small number of patients are treated for pain in the temporomandibular joint, the masticatory and the neck muscles, by dentists and orofacial surgeons. Among half of the patients being treated in neurological headache clinics, the temporomandibular joint and the masticatory muscles are the source of the pain. In order to achieve better research and a classification, the International Headache Society, consisting largely of neurologists, developed a classification system. A comparable development occurred among oral health spe

The aim was to apply diagnostic criteria, as published by the International Headache Society (IHS), to the diagnosis of orofacial pain. A total of 328 consecutive patients with orofacial pain were collected over a period of 2 years. The orofacial pain clinic routinely employs criteria published by the IHS, the American Academy of Orofacial Pain (AAOP) and the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDCTMD). Employing IHS criteria, 184 patients were successfully diagnosed (56%), including 34 with persistent idiopathic facial pain. In the remaining 144 we applied AAOP/RDCTM

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of intravenous valproate in managing moderate to severe headaches.
BACKGROUND: Despite major strides in the understanding of primary headache disorders, there have been few additions to acute headache management other than introduction of the triptans. An intravenous antiepileptic preparation, sodium valproate, has been reported to be effective in the management of status epilepticus and acute headache.
METHODS: Between March 13, 2000 and October 11, 2000, we prospectively treated, in a nonrandomized and open-label study, every patient with a moderat

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) involve pain and dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint and associated muscles. Emerging evidence suggests associations with bruxism, poor sleep quality, anxiety disorders, and tension-type headache (TTH). To systematically review the associations between bruxism, sleep quality, anxiety disorders, and TTH in patients with TMD. Systematic searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library up to May 2025. Studies included adults with TMD and reported associations with bruxism, sleep quality, anxiety, or TTH. Risk of bias wa

Neurostimulation for primary headaches is being increasingly utilized as a treatment modality. Use of neuromoduation has generated multiple case reports as well as some controlled studies. This article is the first of 2 systematic reviews of available data regarding neurostimulation for primary headache conditions. The pathophysiology, relative anatomy, theoretical mechanisms, and history of neurostimulation for primary headache are covered in this section, Part 1 of 2. The literature regarding peripheral neurostimulatory targets is also reviewed in Part 1. These peripheral targets include: pe

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of the prevalence and impact of headache on the preceding day ("headache yesterday"; HY) is a new approach, allowing more precise estimation of headache-attributed burden without recall error. The aim of the study was to estimate the national burden attributable to headache disorders in Russia by applying measures of prevalence of HY and its impact on productivity and daily activities in the general population.
METHODS: We interviewed a representative population-based sample face-to-face by visiting randomly selected households throughout Russia. We randomly selected on

The Aids to Management are a product of the Global Campaign against Headache, a worldwide programme of action conducted in official relations with the World Health Organization. Developed in partnership with the European Headache Federation, they update the first edition published 11 years ago.The common headache disorders (migraine, tension-type headache and medication-overuse headache) are major causes of ill health. They should be managed in primary care, firstly because their management is generally not difficult, and secondly because they are so common. These Aids to Management, with the

Headache disorders, particularly migraine, are one of the most common and disabling neurological disorders. There is a need for high-quality, accessible care for patients with headache disorders across all levels of the healthcare system in Singapore. The role of the Headache Society of Singapore is to increase awareness and advance the understanding of these disorders and to advocate for the needs of affected patients. In this first edition of local consensus guidelines, we focus on treatment approaches for headaches and provide consensus recommendations for the management of migraine in adul

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and primary headaches are common pain conditions and often co-exist. TMD classification includes the term 'headache secondary to TMD' but this term does not acknowledge the likelihood that primary headache pathophysiology underpins headache causing painful TMD signs and symptoms in many patients. The two disorders have a complex link and we do not fully understand their interrelationship. However, growing evidence shows a significant association between the two disorders. This article reviews the possible connection between temporomandibular disorders and pri

BACKGROUND: The overall prevalence of headaches decreases with age; however headaches remain frequent in aged individuals who are also affected by other disorders such as cognitive decline. Despite the high frequency of both conditions in these persons, the association between headaches and cognitive decline is underexplored, underdiagnosed and poorly understood.
OBJECTIVE: In the present article, we aim to provide a comprehensive review of existing data concerning the link between headache and cognitive decline.
METHODS: We undertook a systematic literature review to report articles that fo

There are numerous neural structures (parasympathetic, sympathetic, and trigeminal sensory) that are compacted in a small well defined area of the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF). These targets can be readily accessed via minimally invasive neuromodulation techniques making the methods more desirable than neurosurgical deep brain or hypothalamic intervention. Recent research has shed light over the important role of the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG), which is located within the PPF, in cerebrovascular autonomic physiology as well as in the pathophysiology of different headache disorders (cluster h
