A Health Equity Study of Heart Health Promotion in Black Adults: Cultural Strengths and Heart Health Behaviors.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the Black population, accounting for over 22% of fatalities. Health equity science aims to explore this for evidence of social determinants that can eliminate cardiovascular health disparities. METHODS: This study explored associations between three American Heart Association constructs of positive psychological health that reflect cultural strengths (environmental well-being, Black identity, and spirituality) with three modifiable health behaviors (blood pressure checking, exercise, and physical activity) in 470 Black adul

VA Health Care Utilization Among U.S. Veterans: The Influence of Social Determinants of Health and Health Factors.

OBJECTIVE: The authors aimed to use data on social determinants of health (SDOH) and health characteristics to differentiate users of VA health care from nonusers in order to inform clinical and policy decisions. METHODS: Data from 2,636 U.S. veterans in a national study (2025-2026) were analyzed to assess trends in use of VA health care, as well as the SDOH and health characteristics associated with primary use of such care. RESULTS: Primary use of VA health care was higher in 2025-2026 (27%) than in 2011 (17%) and 2019-2020 (21%; all p<0.001). The strongest correlates of primary use includ

What health are we talking about? Biodiversity as the missing link between One Health and Planetary Health.

Health has become a central term in global sustainability policy, yet it is often used without sufficient conceptual precision. Public health, global health, One Health, EcoHealth, GeoHealth, and Planetary Health each emphasize different dimensions of the relationship between humans, animals, and the environment. In policy contexts, however, these distinctions are frequently blurred. We argue that biodiversity is often treated as an environmental co-benefit rather than as a foundational determinant of health. This weakens the implementation of One Health approaches because biodiversity underpi

Life Goal Content and Health Outcomes: Associations with Mental Health and Health Behaviours Among Turkish University Students.

Life goals are described as a general psychological resource for health, but whether goals of different content relate equally to mental health and to health behaviour is unknown. Participants were 408 students at a Turkish state university (71.1% women; mean age 21.76 years, SD = 4.20) who completed the Life Goals Scale, distinguishing career, relationship, and body-related goals, together with measures of psychological well-being, psychological distress, cognitive flexibility, physical activity, and nutritional risk. Regression models adjusted for gender, age, grade level, body mass index, a

Electronic Health Record Analysis for Personalized Medicine: Predicting Malnutrition-Related Health Outcomes and Secondary Neuropsychiatric Health Concerns.

Malnutrition poses risks regarding cognitive, behavioral, and physical well-being. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalent health issues associated with malnutrition by utilizing electronic health records (EHR) data. The IBM Watson Health, Explorys platform was used to access the EHR data. Two cohorts were created by two queries; patients with a history of malnutrition (n=5180) and patients without a history of malnutrition diagnosis (n= 413890). The log odds ratio and χ2 statistic were used to identify the statistically significant differences between these two cohorts. We foun

Addressing Health Literacy Needs in Rheumatology: Which Patient Health Literacy Profiles Need the Attention of Health Professionals?

OBJECTIVE: To identify and describe health literacy profiles of patients with rheumatic diseases and explore whether the identified health literacy profiles can be generalized to a broader rheumatology context. METHODS: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, and gout from 3 hospitals in different regions in The Netherlands completed the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ). Hierarchical cluster analysis was used to identify patients' health literacy profiles based on 9 HLQ domains. A multinomial regression model with the identified health literacy profiles as the dependent vari

Health visitors' views on promoting oral health and supporting clients with dental health problems: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Inequalities in dental decay in young children persist, resulting in high admission rates for general anaesthetics for tooth extractions. Health visitors have the potential to improve dental attendance and oral health in families least likely to engage with dental services. There is little evidence on health visitor views on this. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 17 health visitors working in both affluent and deprived areas in a single UK city. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, anonymized and analysed following a constructiv

Trends in inequality in maternal and child health and health care in Uganda: Analysis of the Uganda demographic and health surveys.

BACKGROUND: Uganda has made great strides in improving maternal and child health. However, little is known about how this improvement has been distributed across different socioeconomic categories, and how the health inequalities have changed over time. This study analyses data from Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) conducted in 2006, 2011, and 2016 in Uganda, to assess trends in inequality for a variety of mother and child health and health care indicators. METHODS: The indicators studied are acknowledged as critical for monitoring and evaluating maternal and child health status. These in

A systematic review of the evidence on the effect of parental communication about health and health behaviours on children's health and wellbeing.

Parents report feeling unsure how best to talk with their children about sensitive health topics and may avoid such conversations; yet if children have questions or concerns about their health, talking to a parent could enhance their health and wellbeing. We investigated the effects of parental communications about health and health behaviours on children's health and wellbeing, and explored what strategies can encourage parents to communicate about health. We conducted a systematic review and narrative synthesis of research published between January 2008 and April 2020 from five databases. Of

Differences in the health, mental health and health-promoting behaviours of rural versus urban cancer survivors in Australia.

PURPOSE: People affected by cancer who live in rural Australia experience inferior survival compared to their urban counterparts. This study determines whether self-reported physical and mental health, as well as health-promoting behaviours, also differ between rural and urban Australian adults with a history of cancer. METHODS: Weighted, representative population data were collected via the South Australian Monitoring and Surveillance System between 1 January 2010 and 1 June 2015. Data for participants with a history of cancer (n = 4295) were analysed with adjustment for survey year, gender,

The Ontario Child Health Study: social adjustment and mental health of siblings of children with chronic health problems.

There has been controversy concerning the type and amount of psychosocial maladjustment among the siblings of children with chronic physical health problems and disabilities. Most previous studies have been conducted in clinical populations, often from tertiary care centers. This paper reports the risks of psychiatric disorders and social adjustment problems of the siblings of chronically ill children found in the Ontario Child Health Study (OCHS). The OCHS was a general population survey of 3,294 children, 4-16 years of age, living in 1,869 randomly selected families in the Province of Ontari

Incarceration and Health.

The expansion of the penal system has been one of the most dramatic trends in contemporary American society. A wealth of research has examined the impact of incarceration on a range of later life outcomes and has considered how the penal system has emerged as a mechanism of stratification and inequality in the United States. In this article, we review the literature from a comparatively new vein of this research: the impact of incarceration on health outcomes. We first consider the impact of incarceration on a range of individual outcomes, from chronic health conditions to mortality. We then c

Potassium and health.

Potassium was identified as a shortfall nutrient by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 Advisory Committee. The committee concluded that there was a moderate body of evidence of the association between potassium intake and blood pressure reduction in adults, which in turn influences the risk of stroke and coronary heart disease. Evidence is also accumulating of the protective effect of adequate dietary potassium on age-related bone loss and reduction of kidney stones. These benefits depend on organic anions associated with potassium as occurs in foods such as fruits and vegetables, in co

Urbanisation and health.

The effect on health of urbanisation is two-edged. On the one hand, there are the benefits of ready access to healthcare, sanitation, and secure nutrition, whilst on the other there are the evils of overcrowding, pollution, social deprivation, crime, and stress-related illness. In less developed countries, urbanisation also opens the door to 'western' diseases, including hypertension, heart disease, obesity, diabetes and asthma. Here we review some of the health-related aspects of urbanisation, and comment on strategies designed to improve urban health. Because there is such a clear divide bet

EMF and health.

Electric and magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the modern society, and concerns have been expressed regarding possible adverse effects of these exposures. This review covers epidemiologic research on health effects of exposures to static, extremely low-frequency (ELF), and radio frequency (RF) fields. Research on ELF fields has been performed for more than two decades, and the methodology and quality of studies have improved over time. Studies have consistently shown increased risk for childhood leukemia associated with ELF magnetic fields, whereas ELF fields most likely are not a risk factor
