OBJECTIVE: Approximately 10% of emergency medical services (EMS) encounters in the United States are behavioral health related, but pediatric behavioral health EMS encounters have not been well characterized. We sought to describe demographic, clinical, and EMS system characteristics of pediatric behavioral health EMS encounters across the United States and to evaluate factors associated with sedative medication administration and physical restraint use during these encounters.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study of pediatric (<18 years old) behavioral health EMS encou

Although a relationship between traditional cardiovascular risk factors and stroke has long been recognized, these risk factors likely play a role in other aspects of brain health. Clinical stroke is only the tip of the iceberg of vascular brain injury that includes covert infarcts, white matter hyperintensities, and microbleeds. Furthermore, an individual's risk for not only stroke but poor brain health includes not only these traditional vascular risk factors but also lifestyle and genetic factors. The purpose of this narrative review is to summarize the state of the evidence on traditional

OBJECTIVE: This article comprehensively examines the relationship between interpersonal discrimination (IPD) and health-related behavior (HB), expanding upon Pascoe and Richman's (2009) meta-analysis and research synthesis.
METHOD: One hundred and twenty one articles providing zero-order correlations (or information allowing their calculation) between perceptions of IPD and a variety of HB outcomes were coded and analyzed using a random-effects meta-analysis model. One hundred and fifty six articles examining this relationship using multivariate models were also coded and summarized within a

Body weight dissatisfaction has been described as a marker for various health diseases, given its direct association with social, physical, and emotional suffering. We investigated the association between body weight dissatisfaction and health risk behaviors in adolescents. This was a cross-sectional study conducted with 668 adolescents aged 14-19 years in the city of São José, southern Brazil. Body weight satisfaction/dissatisfaction was assessed using a questionnaire validated for the investigated population. Health risk behaviors included smoking, alcohol, illicit drugs, medication, non-pre

BACKGROUND: Female adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors face higher infertility and pregnancy risks than peers with no cancer history. Preconception health behaviors such as physical activity (PA), tobacco smoking, and alcohol intake influence reproductive outcomes. In general populations, pregnancy intention is positively associated with healthy preconception behaviors, but it has not been studied among AYA survivors. The authors hypothesized that higher pregnancy intention would be associated with healthier behaviors, especially among AYA survivors with perceived infertility ris

Background: Lifestyle behaviors (LB), defined by diet and physical activity, are associated with cardiometabolic health among adults. The association of LB with cardiometabolic health among middle-school children is uncertain. Methods: An abbreviated version of the School Physical Activity and Nutrition survey was used to examine LB among students participating in a wellness program between 2004 and 2018. Students were incorporated into three groups determined by self-reported healthy LB (≥6, 4-5, ≤3 behaviors), including; ≤1 serving/day sugary foods/beverages; ≤1 serving/day fried/fatty foods

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, billions of people have gone into lockdown, facing pandemic related challenges that engender weight gain, especially in the obese. We report the results of an online survey, conducted during Israel's first quarantine, of 279 adults treated in hospital-based obesity clinics with counseling, medications, surgery, endoscopic procedures, or any combination of these for weight loss. In this study, we assessed the association between changes in dietary and lifestyle habits and body weight, and the benefits of receiving weight management care remotely through telemedic

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common neurological condition that results from an external force altering normal brain function, whether temporarily or permanently. A concussion is one type of TBI. TBIs vary greatly in severity, which concomitantly creates tremendous variability in their manifestation. The fingerprint of TBI is damage to the frontal areas of the brain, which, with sufficient magnitude, results in impairment of a person's ability to regulate cognition, emotion, and behavior. These consequences of TBI make recognition in the context of treating behavioral health conditions of

Obesity is a serious public health problem within the United States. One promising approach to obesity prevention is health behavior change among college students, focusing on diet, sleep, and exercise. However, it remains unclear whether a health behavior change promotion program implemented in the classroom will effectively improve these health behaviors and negative outcomes related to obesity, particularly within classes of different topics. We examined the impact of a 6-week health behavior change program based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. Across several years, with two seemingly di

BACKGROUND: Regular physical activity (PA), adequate gestational weight gain (GWG), and healthy eating are important for the long-term health of both mother and baby. Hence, it is important that women receive current and updated advice on these topics and are encouraged to adopt a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the main information sources among pregnant women regarding PA, GWG, and nutrition as well as to evaluate how these information sources may affect their health behaviors.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study design, comprising an el

This study examines the implications of a history of personal violence on health and health behaviors. A secondary analysis of cross-sectional data involving adults (n = 214) from a semirural area in southern Louisiana between October 2008 and December 2010 was conducted to ascertain the association between a personal history of violence victimization and indicators of sexual health behaviors and outcomes: communication with sexual partners about HIV status, consistent condom use, and sexually transmitted infection (STI). While violence victimization is widely accepted as a risk factor for hig

Modifiable health behaviors are an important cause of visits to emergency departments (EDs). Substance use, unsafe sexual behavior, interpersonal violence, unintentional injury, and other risky behaviors account for a large proportion of ED volume, as well as up to 40% of all deaths in the United States. While emergency physicians commonly treat the illnesses and injuries caused by these behaviors, additional opportunities exist to screen, intervene, refer, and initiate treatment for patients with these health risks. This article reviews the epidemiology and clinical impact of risky health beh

In this study, we examined the relationship between affect and health behaviors. The study participants were women (n = 1366), aged 18-74 years, who had not been previously diagnosed with breast cancer, who had a working telephone number and address, who spoke English, who planned to be in their present residence for at least 1 year, and who were willing to complete the survey requirements. General anxiety was a significant predictor of eating a low-fat diet, in a quadratic manner (p < .05). General anxiety and breast cancer worry were significant predictors of breast self-examination, in a qu

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are serious eating disorders that affect a significant number of adolescents and young adults. Individuals with anorexia nervosa tend to ignore or deny their excessive dieting and may present purging habits. The individual with bulimia nervosa spends great effort and time in compensating the effects of binge eating with dieting and fasting, self-inducing vomiting, utilization of laxatives or overexercising. The incidence of those behavioral disorders seems to be increasing, but there are no epidemiological data on that matter in Brazil. The dental practitio
