Health professions education and training programs in health care for homeless individuals: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: In 2024, homelessness in the United States reached a historic peak. Homelessness creates challenges for affected individuals and health care professionals. Although research suggests that health professions education (HPE) students and trainees and homeless patients can benefit from educational and training programs in health care for homeless individuals (homeless health care), how many programs exist or are effective is unknown. This scoping review identifies programs, synthesizes outcomes, summarizes gaps, and provides recommendations to advance practice. METHOD: In May 2023, the

Promoting health equity through health literacy interventions in educational institutions: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in health outcomes have been associated with inequitable access to health literacy and services. Additionally, reduced health literacy may lead to an unhealthy lifestyle, causing a decrease in quality of life and social inequities. Advancing health literacy is vital in educational organizations to curb gaps in social inequities. Adapting strategies to promote health literacy is essential for advancing equitable and effective educational organizations. Therefore, policies and interventions should aim to address any barriers that threaten inequities in the educational org

Bridging Healthcare and Prevention: Community-based Health Education for Improving Older Adults' Health.

This study examines the effects of community-based health education (CBHE) on the well-being of older adults in China. Using data from the 2018 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), we first estimate ordinary least square (OLS) regressions to assess the association between CBHE participation and three health outcomes-self-rated health, self-rated quality of life, and anxiety. To ensure robustness, we complement our main analyses with entropy balancing, ordered logit models, propensity score matching (PSM), and alternative health indicators. Results indicate that CB

Women in Free Clinics: An Assessment of Health-Related Quality of Life for Prevention and Health Education.

Understanding gender influences on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is important to improve women's health when considering diseases that afflict women specifically. The target population of this study was uninsured female free clinic patients who are low socio-economic status and lack access to healthcare resources. Free clinics provide free or reduced fee healthcare to individuals who lack access to primary care and are socio-economically disadvantaged. While approximately half of free clinic patients are women, there is a paucity of comprehensive health-related data for female free cl

Receipt of school health education and school health service among adolescent immigrants in Massachusetts.

This study assessed whether immigrant adolescents receive health education and services in schools at levels comparable to native-born peers. Surveys from 2,635 8th and 10th graders allowed comparisons between students living in the United States "always" (n = 2,080), "more than six years" (n = 299), and "six years or less" (n = 191). Immigrant students were equally likely to receive health education, more likely to use peer counseling or support groups (p < .001), and less likely to use health services (p < .05). They communicated more often with staff (p < .05), were more concerned about men

Relationship of adaptive expertise of health professions educators with age, experience, academic rank, and their work performance during an altered academic environment.

BACKGROUND: Health professionals and health professions educators (HPEs) worldwide were confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted standard practice and forced HPEs to develop creative, alternative modes of training and education. The ability of people to work successfully and efficiently in non-standard situations can be called adaptive expertise in which people quickly overcome changes in work requirements using their expert knowledge in novel ways. The objectives of the current study were to investigate how the adaptive expertise of a group of HPEs influenced perceived work perfor

Digital health literacy in Somali higher education: a public health agenda for navigating health misinformation and generative AI.

Digital health literacy is becoming a core public-health capability as health information is increasingly encountered through search engines, social media, digital services, and generative artificial intelligence (AI). University students are frequent users of these environments, yet digital access does not necessarily confer the ability to evaluate source credibility, recognize misinformation, judge the limits of AI-generated advice, protect personal data, or know when professional guidance is required. This Perspective argues that digital health literacy in Somali higher education should be

The Role of Resiliency Education in Prenatal Classes on Maternal Mental Health.

PURPOSE: Pregnant women with low incomes and racial/ethnic minorities experience higher rates of maternal depression and anxiety, which negatively impact maternal and infant well-being. Racial minorities experience increased stress due to social factors and ongoing systemic inequalities in the United States. To address these disparities, the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (LACDHS) developed a novel prenatal education and support curriculum that incorporated resilience-building to deliver in-person, interactive prenatal education content. METHODS: An evidence-based resilience

High school health education: focus on the development of self-assessment.

BACKGROUND: The present study sought to examine the pedagogical value of developing self-assessment skills through the memorization and regular self-reminding of correct posture among secondary school students. In addition, the research aimed to investigate whether a posture-reminding training method could positively influence self-assessment abilities, health-related behaviors, and stress reduction. The underlying assumption was that beyond the mere provision of theoretical knowledge and instructions related to a healthy lifestyle, it is essential to support students in internalizing and inte

A Multidisciplinary Educational Intervention to Improve the Health of Appalachian Coal Miners.

INTRODUCTION: Coal Mine Dust Lung Disease (CMDLD, often referred to as Black Lung) is associated with social, economic and emotional impacts for miners, their families and Appalachian communities. Effective care for coal miners requires a multidisciplinary approach centered on collaboration between physicians, behavioral health specialists, epidemiologists, federal regulators, attorneys, journalists, community advocates, and policy experts. These partnerships are essential for clinical management, disease prevention, benefits navigation, and worker protections. Despite this complexity, most he

Sustaining health interventions in urban schools to construct educational possibilities.

School-based health and wellness initiatives have evolved from isolated efforts into comprehensive, multi-level programs designed to improve and sustain children's overall health and well-being. When focused on building knowledge and changing behavior, these interventions can positively influence the development of lifelong healthy habits in youth. While facilitators and barriers to initial implementation are well documented, less is known about the long-term sustainability of such programs after external support and funding end. This qualitative study examined how inputs, activities, and reso

Nourishing collaboration: interdisciplinary nutrition education for health care professionals.

Nutrition education remains insufficient in many health care professional training programs despite the central role of diet in the prevention and management of chronic disease. Contemporary nutrition science increasingly recognizes that dietary behaviors and health outcomes are shaped by complex interactions among biological, behavioral, environmental, and food system factors. This perspective proposes an interdisciplinary framework for nutrition education that integrates the complementary expertise of physicians, dietitians, chefs, and farmers. By bridging clinical care, nutrition science, c
