Mental and physical health in children of women with a history of anorexia nervosa.

Few studies have investigated the offspring of women with anorexia nervosa (AN). The aim of this study was to examine perinatal status, mental and physical health in the offspring of mothers with a history of AN. Fifty-one individuals with adolescent-onset AN and 51 matched controls (COMP) have been followed prospectively. Presently, 30 years after AN onset, at a mean age of 44 years, female participants who had given birth (nAN = 40, nCOMP = 40) were interviewed regarding psychiatric health in their offspring using the Developmental and Well-Being Assessment and the MINI International Neurops

Maternal Depression and Physical Health of Under-Five Children in Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Maternal depression is the most prevalent mental health problem worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries. It impairs the cognitive, physical, and social abilities of mothers and disturbs effective parenting practices. Therefore, the consequences of mental, physical, and social suffering are not limited to the mother herself but are transmitted to future generations by negatively affecting the child's health. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims to analyse the relationship between maternal depression and child's physical health in Turkey, a middle-income, developing c

Dietary and Physical Exercise Facilitation for Cardiovascular Health in Indian Subcontinent.

The advent of industrialization and outburst of urbanization significantly influences the lifestyle of people. Further, the incidence of noncommunicable diseases, such as chronic lung conditions, cancer, cardiovascular diseases (including conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels), diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, has increased. The prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in India in 2016 was reported to be 54.5 million. One out of four deaths was associated with cardiovascular diseases. With time, the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases is exerting more impact on the younger Indian

Mental health and physical activity in SCI: Is anxiety sensitivity important?

UNLABELLED: Compared to research conducted with nondisabled samples, little is known about the relation between mental health and physical activity (PA) in individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI). Despite this population being more at risk of experiencing anxiety and depression and less likely to engage in PA, few studies have investigated other factors that may impact this association in this population such as anxiety sensitivity (AS). AS is a fear of physiological arousal sensations, and importantly has been shown to be negatively associated with PA in people without disabilities. It is

Regulation of bone health through physical exercise: Mechanisms and types.

Osteoporosis, characterized by bone mineral density reduction, bone mass loss, increased bone fragility, and propensity to fractures, is a common disease in older individuals and one of the most serious health problems worldwide. The imbalance between osteoblasts and osteoclasts results in the predominance of bone resorption and decreased bone formation. In recent years, it has been found that regular and proper exercise not only helps prevent the occurrence of osteoporosis but also adds benefits to osteoporosis therapy; accordingly, bone homeostasis is closely associated with mechanical stres

Sex-Specific Limitations in Physical Health in Primary Adrenal Insufficiency.

BACKGROUND: Patients with primary adrenal insufficiency (PAI) suffer reduced quality of life (QoL), but comparisons with large-scale normative data are scarce. The clinical characteristics associated with reduced QoL are largely unknown. METHODS: Cross-sectional data on clinical characteristics and QoL scores from 494 patients were included. QoL was measured using RAND-36 (generic) and AddiQoL (-30 and -8, disease-specific). RAND-36 is reported as subdomain scores as well as physical (PCS) and metal (MCS) summary scores and compared with normative data. RESULTS: Perception of physical role w

The Impact of Diet and Physical Activity on Bone Health in Children and Adolescents.

There is growing recognition of the role of diet and physical activity in modulating bone mineral density, bone mineral content, and remodeling, which in turn can impact bone health later in life. Adequate nutrient composition could influence bone health and help to maximize peak bone mass. Therefore, children's nutrition may have lifelong consequences. Also, physical activity, adequate in volume or intensity, may have positive consequences on bone mineral content and density and may preserve bone loss in adulthood. Most of the literature that exists for children, about diet and physical activ

Physiological stress markers, mental health and objective physical function.

OBJECTIVE: The observed poorer physical function in persons with mental disorders could partly be due to dysregulation in physiological stress systems. However, an integrated picture of the role of physiological stress systems on objective physical function is lacking. This study examined the association of multiple physiological stress systems with objective physical function, and explored whether these stress systems contribute to the relationship between depression/anxiety and poorer physical function. METHODS: Data of 2860 persons of the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety was use

The body in isolation: The physical health impacts of incarceration in solitary confinement.

We examine how solitary confinement correlates with self-reported adverse physical health outcomes, and how such outcomes extend the understanding of the health disparities associated with incarceration. Using a mixed methods approach, we find that solitary confinement is associated not just with mental, but also with physical health problems. Given the disproportionate use of solitary among incarcerated people of color, these symptoms are most likely to affect those populations. Drawing from a random sample of prisoners (n = 106) in long-term solitary confinement in the Washington State Depar

The relation of abuse to physical and psychological health in adults with developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: People with developmental disabilities are at disproportionately high risk of abuse. Although considerable evidence exists on the health-related consequences of abuse in the general population, little is known about those consequences in people with developmental disabilities. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relation of abuse with psychological and physical health outcomes in adults with developmental disabilities. METHODS: We used an accessible audio computer-assisted self-interview to collect anonymous data on demographic and disability characteristics, childhood and adult abuse expe

Effects of relationship functioning on the biological experience of stress and physical health.

In this paper, we outline how relationship functioning affects the biological experience of stress and its consequences for physical health. Negative relationship perceptions and processes, such as attachment insecurity, hostility, and frequent conflict, tend to heighten stress responses and generate worse health over time, whereas positive relationship perceptions and processes, such as responsiveness, support, and intimacy, are generally associated with reduced or buffered stress responses and improved health (with some caveats). Future research should focus on the mechanisms behind these ef

Using health psychology techniques to manage chronic physical symptoms.

Chest pain and palpitations, non-malignant pain, breathlessness and fatigue often endure despite the receipt of appropriate nursing and medical care. This is distressing for patients, impacts on their quality of life and ability to function and is associated with high healthcare usage and costs. The cognitive behavioural approach offers nurses a model to understand how people's perceptions and beliefs and their emotional, behavioural and physiological reactions are linked. Common 'thinking errors' which can exacerbate symptom severity and impact are highlighted. Understanding of this model may

Relationship of meeting physical activity guidelines with health-related utility.

OBJECTIVE: Health-related utility measures overall health status and quality of life and is commonly incorporated into cost-effectiveness analyses. This study investigates whether attainment of federal physical activity guidelines translates into better health-related utility in adults with or at risk for knee osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 1,908 adults with or at risk for knee OA participating in the accelerometer ancillary study of the Osteoarthritis Initiative were assessed. Physical activity was measured using 7 days of accelerometer monitoring and was classified

Inadequate physical activity and health care expenditures in the United States.

This study estimates the percentage of health care expenditures in the non-institutionalized United States (U.S.) adult population associated with levels of physical activity inadequate to meet current guidelines. Leisure-time physical activity data from the National Health Interview Survey (2004-2010) were merged with health care expenditure data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (2006-2011). Health care expenditures for inactive (i.e., no physical activity) and insufficiently active adults (i.e., some physical activity but not enough to meet guidelines) were compared with active adul
