The health-care needs and resources of disease-endemic regions such as west Africa have been a major focus during the recent Ebola outbreak. On the basis of that experience, we call attention to two priorities that have unfortunately been ignored thus far: 1) the development of clinical research facilities and 2) the training of host country investigators to ensure that the facilities and expertise necessary to evaluate candidate interventions are available on-site in endemic regions when and where they are needed. In their absence, as illustrated by the recent uncertainty about the use of ant

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States, disproportionately affecting populations affected by structural and social inequities. Million Hearts 2027 aims to advance CVD health equity through targeted policies, processes, and practices that promote equitable access to resources. The initiative prioritizes 5 populations at increased risk: racial and ethnic minority groups, individuals with lower incomes, people living in rural areas or healthcare access deserts, individuals with behavioral health conditions who use tobacco, and pregnant or postp

Psittacosis caused by Chlamydia psittaci has re-emerged in China as sporadic cases and localized outbreaks. However, current knowledge remains fragmented across the clinical, veterinary, epidemiological, and public health fields. This scoping review mapped studies on psittacosis in China, identified major knowledge gaps, and defined priorities for research, clinical management, and prevention and control. Following the Arksey and O'Malley framework and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR), China National Knowledge Infrast

The World Health Organization, in response to the growing burden of fungal disease, established a process to develop a fungal priority pathogens list (FPPL). This systematic review aimed to evaluate the epidemiology and impact of invasive fungal disease due to Mucorales. PubMed and Web of Science were searched to identify studies published between January 1, 2011 and February 23, 2021. Studies reporting on mortality, inpatient care, complications and sequelae, antifungal susceptibility, risk factors, preventability, annual incidence, global distribution, and emergence during the study time fra

BACKGROUND & AIMS: An estimated 38% of adults worldwide have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). From individual impacts to widespread public health and economic consequences, the implications of this disease are profound. This study aimed to develop an aligned, prioritised fatty liver disease research agenda for the global health community.
METHODS: Nine co-chairs drafted initial research priorities, subsequently reviewed by 40 core authors and debated during a three-day in-person meeting. Following a Delphi methodology, over two rounds, a large panel (R1 n = 344, R2 n = 288) reviewed

PURPOSE: Despite the importance of menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) for adolescent girls' health, education, and gender equality, few countries monitor MHH. MHH needs remain underprioritized, and progress achieved through policies, programs, or investments go unmeasured. This article reports the systematic development of an indicator shortlist to monitor adolescent girls' MHH at the national and global levels across low- and middle-income countries.
METHODS: A core group of MHH researchers and practitioners collaborated with stakeholders from three countries with demonstrated commitment to

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a major public health problem. In the last decade, in some European countries, abdominal aortic screening (AAS) is emerging as a potential prevention for the rupture of AAA. The goals of our study were to estimate AAA prevalence and risk factors in males and females in a central Italian population, also defining the cost-effectiveness of AAS programs. A pilot study screening was conducted between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 2019 in the municipality of Teramo (Abruzzo Region, Italy) in a group of men and women, ranging from the age of 65 to 79, who were not

Families with children living in areas of high deprivation face multiple health and social challenges, and this high level of need has impacts on the work of health practitioners working in such areas. All families in the UK with children under five years have access to health visiting services, and health visitors have a key role in mitigating the effects of deprivation by addressing health needs through evidence based practice. This paper reports the first stage of a project in Tower Hamlets, London, an area of significant deprivation, which aims to develop an evidence-based toolkit to suppo

BACKGROUND: In April 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) published a list of "priority medicines" for maternal and child health based on 1) the global burden of disease and 2) evidence of efficacy and safety. The objective of this study was to examine the occurrence of these priority medicines on national essential medicines lists.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: All essential medicines lists published since 1999 were selected from the WHO website collection. The most-up-to date list for each country was then selected, resulting in 89 unique country lists. Each list was evaluated for inclusion of

In developing public health policy and planning for a bioterrorist attack or vaccination of military personnel, the most common method for assigning priority is using the probability of attack with a particular agent as the single criterion. Using this approach, smallpox is often dismissed as an unlikely threat. We aimed to develop an evidence-based, systematic, multifactorial method for prioritizing the level of risk of each category A bioterrorism agent. Using 10 criterion, anthrax scored the highest, followed by smallpox. Tularemia was the lowest scoring agent. We suggest that such a system

BACKGROUND: Primary health care (PHC) provides holistic care to patients across the lifespan and offers a whole-society approach to health and wellbeing. PHC services are accessed by more people than any other type of healthcare in Ontario. While patient engagement in research is increasingly common, it is less common in PHC to engage patients in decision-making beyond point-of-care. Roles for patient partners in learning health systems, including PHC, can be unclear and yet patient partners desire opportunities to meaningfully contribute to these rapid cycles of learning and improvement. Schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, is a widespread neglected tropical disease (NTD) in Africa, with more significant research and development (R&D) challenges and gaps compared to other preventive chemotherapy NTDs (PC-NTDs) like onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, and trachoma. In response to this challenge, some global initiatives have advocated for bridging this gap, focusing on coordinated engagement with research donors. In this opinion article we highlight key R&D priorities for combating schistosomiasis in the WHO Africa region. These include defining morbidity indicators, expa

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health threat that undermines the effectiveness of treatments and the sustainability of health systems. In 2015, Canada published its first AMR pathogen prioritization list, which laid the foundation for the Canadian Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (CARSS). Since then, evolving resistance patterns, newly emerging pathogens, and enhanced surveillance capacity have prompted a comprehensive update to identify the most pressing AMR threats in the Canadian context.
OBJECTIVE: To undertake a systematic and reproducible prio

Cryptococcosis causes a high burden of disease worldwide. This systematic review summarizes the literature on Cryptococcus neoformans and C. gattii infections to inform the World Health Organization's first Fungal Priority Pathogen List. PubMed and Web of Science were used to identify studies reporting on annual incidence, mortality, morbidity, antifungal resistance, preventability, and distribution/emergence in the past 10 years. Mortality rates due to C. neoformans were 41%-61%. Complications included acute renal impairment, raised intracranial pressure needing shunts, and blindness. There w

INTRODUCTION: With improved HIV treatment availability in sub-Saharan Africa, the population of older people with HIV (PWH) is growing. In this qualitative study, we intended to understand (1) the lived experiences of ageing people in rural Uganda, with and without HIV, (2) their fears and health priorities as they grow older.
METHODS: We conducted 36 semi-structured interviews with individuals with and without HIV in Mbarara, Uganda from October 2019 to February 2020. Interview guide topics included priorities in older age, physical functioning in daily activities, social functioning, HIV-re

Rhodococcus erythropolis KB1 is a member of the Actinomycetota and a petroleum-degrading bacterium, isolated from soil contaminated with petroleum products. The resuscitation-promoting factors (Rpf) widely exist among Actinomycetota, which revive the viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state cells and facilitate growth of normal cells. The Rpf2 of the R. erythropolis KB1 is the most complex Rpf protein, which consists of the conserved Rpf domain, one G5 domain and three DUF348 domains. The protein demonstrates muralytic activity and growth-promoting and resuscitation effect, but the exact roles of

PURPOSE: Although substantial research has examined correctional officer health, fewer studies have focused on jail staff, and even fewer have done so within a unified, statewide jail system. This study aims to address this gap by examining staff perceptions of health and wellness across Tennessee's county jails, where centralized oversight enables system level insight.
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Open-ended questionnaire data from 412 correctional personnel were analyzed following survey distribution to staff across all 120 Tennessee county jails. While jails are typically decentralized, Te
