Social factors influence health outcomes and life expectancy. Individuals living in poverty often have adverse health outcomes related to chronic inflammation that affect the cardiovascular, renal, and pulmonary systems. Negative psychosocial experiences are associated with transcriptional changes in genes associated with complex traits. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms by which poverty increases the risk of disease and health disparities are still not fully understood. To bridge the gap in our understanding of the link between living in poverty and adverse health outcomes, we perf

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a hematopoietic stem cell malignancy, driven by the pathognomonic oncogenic fusion protein BCR::ABL1. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) targeting ABL1 have increased the life expectancy of patients with CML to near levels of age-matched healthy individuals. Intriguingly, the response to TKIs varies substantially and is related to observations that CML leukemic stem cells (LSCs) are less sensitive to TKIs. LSC-derived suboptimal response is suggested to explain failing treatment free remission (TFR) in approximately 60% of patients after stopping TKI treatment.

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in Poland and in Europe. Children rarely suffer from them, although most of the risk factors which accelerate progression of atherosclerosis commence in childhood, including: dyslipidemias, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Moreover during last few years the incidence of some of risk factors in children, such as obesity, diabetes and dyslipidemia has increased significantly. It is known from the autopsy studies that atherosclerosis can be identified at very young age in healthy children. In adult population medications such as HMG-Co

Two independent but inter-related conditions that have a growing impact on healthy life expectancy and health care costs in developed nations are an age-related loss of muscle mass (i.e., sarcopenia) and obesity. Sarcopenia is commonly exacerbated in overweight and obese individuals. Progression towards obesity promotes an increase in fat mass and a concomitant decrease in muscle mass, producing an unfavourable ratio of fat to muscle. The coexistence of diminished muscle mass and increased fat mass (so-called 'sarcobesity') is ultimately manifested by impaired mobility and/or development of li

Background In recent years, advances in the treatment of malignant tumors have improved life expectancy and diversified treatment options. However, maintaining high activities of daily living in patients is essential for appropriately treating the primary disease, and interventions for patients with impaired motor function will lead to improved quality of life. Here, we compared the muscle mass of malignant tumor patients who are visiting bone metastasis outpatient clinics with that of healthy subjects. Methods We compared the muscle mass of 61 malignant tumor patients with an Eastern Cooperat

Advances in cancer treatments over the past decades combining chemotherapy with novel technologies in immunotherapies, radiation therapies, and interventional radiology have prolonged life expectancy. Patients have more options for treatments of their primary or metastatic diseases. Increased procedural techniques amid an aging population with multiple comorbidities present risks and challenges in the perioperative period.Chemotherapy remains the mainstay of cancer treatment, can be given intraoperatively, and is combined with other treatment modalities. Immunotherapy is particular to cancer c

Vitamins are a family of micronutrients comprising 13 groups of organic compounds, of which vitamin B1 was identified first, approximately 110 y ago. Deficiency of each vitamin results in specific symptoms, such as neuropathy, dermatitis, diarrhea, dementia, pernicious anemia, scurvy, blindness, rickets, and bleeding. Almost all vitamins can modulate the functions of enzymes and/or other proteins involved in the formation of bone and soft tissues, generation of energy, and regulation of homeostasis via specific vitamin-protein interactions. In addition to the well-known physiological roles of

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-shortening genetic disorder, caused by mutations in the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein that regulates ion and fluid transport in epithelial tissue. Female CF patients face considerable fertility challenges, with higher prevalence of deficient fertility compared to healthy women. Not much is known about the underlying causes. In particular, the pathobiology of the endometrium, the uterus' inner lining essential for pregnancy and expressing fluctuating CFTR levels during the menstrual cycle, is unexplored in CF. To address this gap, we develo

Life expectancy in multiple myeloma has significantly increased. However, a high incidence of chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) can negatively influence quality of life during this period. This study applied functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare areas associated with central pain processing in patients with multiple myeloma who had chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (MM-CIPN) with those from healthy volunteers (HV). Twenty-four participants (n = 12 MM-CIPN, n = 12 HV) underwent Blood Oxygen Level-Dependent (BOLD) fMRI at 3T whilst noxious heat-pain sti

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual disabilities (ID) have a lower life expectancy than their peers without ID. A contributing factor to the lower life expectancy and early mortality could be sarcopenia: low muscle mass and low muscle function. In the general population, sarcopenia strongly predicts early mortality, but this association is unknown in people with ID. Therefore, this study aims to explore the association between sarcopenia and 5-year mortality in older adults with ID.
METHODS: In the Healthy Ageing and Intellectual Disabilities (HA-ID) study, the prevalence of sarcopenia was m

INTRODUCTION: Adults with Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) are at increased risk for psychiatric comorbidities, personality traits, and abnormality in executive function. But studies on adolescents and their impact on quality of life are scarce in the literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed between August 2019 and October 2022 to compare the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities in adolescents with JME and age and gender-matched healthy controls. After completing DSM-5 Structured Clinical Interview (SCID-5) initially in all patients, we measured the seve

Associated with longer life expectancy, greater survival of patients with cardiovascular disorders, and increased use of wearable and insertable/implantable devices capable of detection, the frequency of atrial fibrillation (AF) diagnosis is increasing. This chapter describes two representative patient cases that were used to enable a discussion of the evaluation and management of AF in different scenarios. One patient is young and healthy with paroxysmal AF but no major comorbidities (though there is a family history of AF). The other is older with multiple complicating comorbidities. These c

Obesity is a growing health problem in both children and adults, impairing physical and mental state and impacting health care system costs in both developed and developing countries. It is well-known that individuals with excessive weight gain frequently develop obesity-related complications, which are mainly known as Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and many other risk factors proven to be associated with chronic inflammation, causing disability and

Optimal management of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) remains a challenging surgical problem. Over the last decade surgical and anesthetic improvements have provided perioperative mortality in the 2% range, when elective AAA repair was performed in single Institutions with large vascular experience. However, community- or national-based mortality rates for elective AAA surgery may be as high as 11% or more. Mortality rates associated with ruptured aneurysms remain as high as 90%. AAA prophylactic resection should be indicated when the risk of rupture exceeds the surgical risk. Although the ris

Multiple myeloma, the second most common hematologic malignancy worldwide, is an aggressive disease with high morbidity and mortality rates. Although myeloma remains incurable, new treatments have improved patients' life expectancy and quality of life. However, as these therapies are administered for prolonged and often indefinite periods, their success depends on high treatment adherence and significant patient engagement. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a novel digital educational strategy on treatment adherence, quality of life, and the development of complications in patients wi

INTRODUCTION: With the increase in life expectancy of haemophilia patients (PWH), the risk of osteoporosis increases, but there is little research on whether haemophilia is the cause of osteoporosis.
AIM: To conduct systematically review whether bone mineral density (BMD) in PWH decreased and the factors affecting BMD.
METHODS: Two authors independently searched databases and reviewed citations from relevant articles, selecting studies published in any language and performed in humans before March 2023. Eligibility criteria were observational studies in PWH, with BMD as at least one outcome

Current therapy in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) has improved patient life expectancy close to that of healthy individuals. However, molecular alterations other than BCR::ABL1 fusion gene in CML are barely known. MicroRNAs are important regulators of gene expression, and variants in some of the components of microRNA biosynthesis pathways have been associated with genetic susceptibility to different types of cancer. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the association of variants located in genes involved in the biogenesis of microRNAs with susceptibility to CML. Fifteen variants in ei

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has increasingly been accepted as a supplementary outcome measure for patients after lung transplantation (LTx).
METHODS: Using a retrospective cross-sectional study design, 280 LTx recipients (3 months to 14 years after LTx) were asked to assess their HRQoL using a generic (Quality of Life Profile for Chronic Diseases) questionnaire, which was previously validated for this specific population. In addition, the questionnaire was also performed by 155 healthy participants.
RESULTS: All sub-scale findings ranged from 2.40 to 3.08 (0 to 4) for

BACKGROUND: Child and maternal health outcomes have notably improved in Mexico since 1990, whereas rising adult mortality rates defy traditional epidemiological transition models in which decreased death rates occur across all ages. These trends suggest Mexico is experiencing a more complex, dissonant health transition than historically observed. Enduring inequalities between states further emphasise the need for more detailed health assessments over time. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2013 (GBD 2013) provides the comprehensive, comparable framework through wh
