Clinical Genetic Testing for Hearing Loss: Implications for Genetic Counseling and Gene-Based Therapies.

Genetic factors contribute significantly to congenital hearing loss, with non-syndromic cases being more prevalent and genetically heterogeneous. Currently, 150 genes have been associated with non-syndromic hearing loss, and their identification has improved our understanding of auditory physiology and potential therapeutic targets. Hearing loss gene panels offer comprehensive genetic testing for hereditary hearing loss, and advancements in sequencing technology have made genetic testing more accessible and affordable. Currently, genetic panel tests available at a relatively lower cost are off

Screening for hearing loss using the electronic whisper test: A prospective cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Hearing screening is a method for early identification of hearing loss. Hearing screening is widely used in hospitals as part of physical examination. However, some of them are difficult to operate outside the hospitals regarding portability and user-friendliness. Therefore, we developed a simple yet easy-to-use portable electronic whisper test (EWT) for field deployment, particularly on many subjects. The EWT validity is a hearing screening method compared to pure-tone audiometry. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional comparative with a prospective approach. The subjects were

Comparison of three hearing aid fittings using the Speech Intelligibility Rating (SIR) Test.

This study compared the effects of three different hearing aids on subjective ratings of speech intelligibility. Insertion gain measurements on KEMAR indicated that the hearing aid fittings differed primarily in midfrequency gain. The test passages of the Speech Intelligibility Rating Test (SIR) were recorded onto tape through each hearing aid. The processed passages were presented monaurally to 13 subjects with hearing loss limited to frequencies above 2000 Hz. They rated five passages through each frequency responses (FR) in a randomized order. Each subject was retested within 2 or 3 days to

Optimizing the Chinese Zodiac-in-Noise Test With Antiphasic Stimuli for Better Hearing Loss Detection.

OBJECTIVES: The antiphasic digit-in-noise test has demonstrated the advantages of antiphasic presentation in hearing screening. Inspired by this, this study explores whether incorporating antiphasic stimuli in the Chinese zodiac-in-noise (ZIN) test can enhance its sensitivity to detect hearing loss. Furthermore, this study investigates the relation between the binaural intelligibility level difference (BILD), calculated as the difference between antiphasic and diotic results, and hearing thresholds, and evaluates the potential of BILD as an indicator for hearing loss. DESIGN: Normative data f

Implementation of a Clinical Test of Vestibular Self-Motion Perception in Children and Adults With Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVES: In adult populations, tests of vestibular self-motion perception have been shown to be sensitive to vestibular loss, including subclinical vestibular changes. However, tests of vestibular perception have not been adequately studied in pediatric populations and are not currently possible in a standard clinical environment. To address these gaps, the present study aimed to determine (i) the feasibility of measuring vestibular perception in pediatric populations and (ii) the validity of vestibular perceptual thresholds captured using a standard clinical rotational chair and software.

The genetic basis and the diagnostic yield of genetic testing related to nonsyndromic hearing loss in Qatar.

Hearing loss is the most predominant sensory defect occurring in pediatrics, of which, 66% cases are attributed to genetic factors. The prevalence of hereditary hearing loss increases in consanguineous populations, and the prevalence of hearing loss in Qatar is 5.2%. We aimed to investigate the genetic basis of nonsyndromic hearing loss (NSHL) in Qatar and to evaluate the diagnostic yield of different genetic tests available. A retrospective chart review was conducted for 59 pediatric patients with NSHL referred to the Department of Adult and Pediatric Medical Genetics at Hamad Medical Corpora
