Case Report: Neuroendocrine Tumor With Cardiac Metastasis.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), also known as carcinoid tumors, are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that arise from cells throughout the neuroendocrine system, most commonly arising from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, lungs, and bronchi. Myocardial carcinoid metastasis is rare with an incidence among metastatic carcinoid patients of 4%. They are generally asymptomatic and detected incidentally. Infiltrative myocardial metastasis secondary to carcinoid tumor is exceedingly rare with only single-digit cases reported in the literature. We report the case of a 65-years-old female with a newly d

[Single cardiac metastasis from colorectal cancer: an unusual localization].

Metastasis to the heart from malignancy is a frequent but underestimated event. Tumors that are located in the mediastinum, such as pleural mesothelioma, are more frequently associated with cardiac colonization. Few reports have described metastasis from colon adenocarcinoma, which usually colonizes liver and lungs. Moreover, intracardiac localization is more common for primary cardiac neoplasms than for metastasis. We present an unusual case of a patient operated for colon adenocarcinoma who exhibited a single intracardiac secondary localization. Although the mass was huge, the patient was co

[The nodule of the small intestine--a rare case of benign metastasizing leiomyoma].

The diagnosis of benign metastasizing leiomyoma BML is a casuic case. The term is used to describe a entity of neoplasms characterized by a proliferation of smooth muscle cells with low mitotic index, usually located outside female genital organs. In the world literature there are reports of benign metastasizing leiomyomas in the lungs, skull base and spine, the lymph nodes of the small pelvis and the heart. In the following study the authors analyzed a case of a 72-year-old woman in which, during hysterectomy due to uterine leiomyomas, a nodule of the small intestine was found, confirmed hist

Occurrence of mesothelial/monocytic incidental cardiac excrescences in material from open-heart procedures: case reports and literature review.

Mesothelial/monocytic incidental cardiac excrescences (MICE) are unusual findings during the histological analysis of material from the pericardium, mediastinum, or other tissues collected in open-heart surgery. Despite their somewhat worrisome histological appearance, they show a benign clinical course, and further treatment is virtually never necessary. Hence, the importance of recognizing the entity relays in its differential diagnosis, as an unaware medical pathologist may misinterpret it for a malignant neoplasm. Other mesothelial and histiocytic proliferative lesions, sharing very close

Cystic tumor of papillary muscle of heart: a rare finding in sudden death.

Primary cystic tumors of papillary muscles of the heart are extremely rare. Here, one case of unusual cystic tumor in papillary muscle of the heart in a 37-year-old Myanmar migrant worker has been reported. He came to Malaysia 2 weeks before and one morning was found dead in sleep. Autopsy revealed cystic lesion in the papillary muscle of the mitral valve of heart, which was prolapsing into ventricular cavity. The cyst had white-jelly like sticky mucus material. The cyst was present in papillary muscle with slight invasion in septum area; it was lined by cuboidal-columnar epithelium and contai

Cardiovascular disease in the aged: overview of an autopsy series.

As an overview of cardiovascular disease in the aged, 3657 autopsy cases were analyzed for the frequency and age-wise incidence of cardiovascular disease. The three major categories, ischemic heart disease, valvular heart disease, and aortic aneurysm and dissection were described. 1. The incidence of overall cardiovascular disease increases sharply between the ages of 60 and 75. Prevention and treatment could be effectively directed at this age group. 2. The incidence of organic cardiovascular disease was: myocardial infarction 19.8 percent; valvular disease 10.0 percent; arteriosclerosis obli

Causes of death in the elderly and their changing pattern in Hisayama, a Japanese community. Results from a long-term and autopsy-based study.

The causes of death for the elderly were prospectively studied in Hisayama, Japan, a rural community. We compared 1,621 subjects, aged 40 years or over, recruited in 1961, and 2,053 subjects recruited in 1974. Each cohort was studied in a follow-up that lasted 10 years; they had autopsy rates of 82.1% and 86.1% during each 10-year period, respectively. The most common causes of death for those aged 70 years or over were cerebrovascular disease, malignant neoplasms, and pneumonia. Deaths due to cerebrovascular disease tended to decrease in the recent cohort, but the proportion of decline was mo

Chronic pericardial effusion in the setting of pericardial capillary haemangioma: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac haemangiomas are rare vascular tumours of the heart accounting for less than 5% of benign primary cardiac neoplasms. They are sometimes diagnosed incidentally, since patients can be asymptomatic. The clinical presentation in symptomatic patients, however, is variable, depending on size and exact localization of the tumour. Although cardiac haemangiomas have been reported everywhere in the heart, those localized in the pericardium are extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old female patient with a history of pericardial effusion and pneumonia was admitted to our ho

Cutaneous clear cell myomelanocytic tumour: a new member of the growing family of perivascular epithelioid cell tumours (PEComas). Clinicopathological and immunohistochemical analysis of seven cases.

AIMS: To analyse seven cases of cutaneous myomelanocytic tumour histologically and immunohistochemically. Perivascular epithelioid cell tumours (so-called PEComas) are rare and recently delineated neoplasms occurring in the lung, kidney, pancreas, uterus, falciform ligament, vulva, heart, prostate and soft tissues. PEComas are characterized by a perivascular location of neoplastic cells showing a broad spectrum of epithelioid and spindled cells with clear, and granular pale eosinophilic cytoplasm, and a variable expression of melanocytic and muscle markers, whereas S100 protein and cytokeratin

Interactions Networks for Primary Heart Sarcomas.

Personalized medicine incorporates genetic information into medical practice so as to optimize the management of chronic diseases. In rare diseases, such as heart cancer (incidence 0.0017-0.33%), this may be elusive. Ninety-five percent of the cases are due to secondary involvementwith the neoplasm originating in the lungs, breasts, kidney, blood, or skin. The clinical manifestations of heart tumors (benign or malignant) include heart failure, hypertension, and cardiac arrhythmias of varying severity, frequently resulting in blood vessel emboli, including strokes. This study aims to explain th

[Endocardial myxoma. Current aspects of its histopathogenesis].

Primary tumours of the heart are rare. Among these the myxoma is not only the most common but also the most fascinating neoplasm, because some proponents have argued in favour of a thrombotic rather than a true neoplastic origin. The most compelling arguments against the theory of a thrombotic origin are based on ultrastructural characteristics. Using light-microscopy and immunohistochemistry, the authors attempt to clarify the histogenesis of this peculiar tumour which does not arise from any tissue normally occurring in the heart. It is assumed that the stem cell of the cardiac myxoma is a m

[A case of paraganglioma-related catecholamine-induced cardiomyopathy manifesting as dilated cardiomyopathy and literature review].

Paraganglioma (PGL) are rare, catecholamine-secreting neuroendocrine neoplasms arising from the adrenal medulla or the extra-adrenal paraganglionic system. Excessive secretion of catecholamines by PGL can induce myocardial damage, leading to catecholamine-induced cardiomyopathy (CICM). Some CICM presents morphologically as a dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) phenotype. Its clinical identification and differential diagnosis are highly challenging, necessitating a comprehensive evaluation that integrates biochemical testing and multimodality imaging. Treatment strategies require a precise balance amo

Carcinoid Heart Disease.

Carcinoid heart disease (CHD) is a rare cardiac complication that occurs most commonly in patients with advanced neuroendocrine tumors and is a known sequela of carcinoid syndrome. Neuroendocrine tumors most widely associated with CHD include tumors in the small bowel, followed by lung, large bowel, pancreatic, appendiceal, and ovarian neoplasms. Carcinoid syndrome is a paraneoplastic syndrome caused by the release of serotonin and other substances from neuroendocrine tumors. It results in a spectrum of symptoms, including diarrhea, flushing, bronchospasm, and symptoms of congestive heart fail

Multifocal pheochromocytoma-paraganglioma in a 29-year-old woman with cyanotic congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Multifocal pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma presenting at an early age is commonly associated with a hereditary syndrome. CASE REPORT: A 29-year-old woman was referred for evaluation of multifocal pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma. Interestingly, her family history did not include pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma, and comprehensive genetic testing for the well-documented pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma susceptibility genes was negative. Of note, this patient had a history of a complex cardiac defect resulting in cyanotic congenital heart disease and had never undergone operative repair. T

Interleukin-1 alpha reduces the severity of the vascular leak syndrome produced by interleukin-2 and interleukin-2 plus interferon-alpha.

Histological and ultrastructural changes were investigated in lung, liver, and heart of mice given interleukin-2 (IL-2), either alone or in combination with other cytokines. IL-2 induced a vascular leak syndrome (VLS) of a moderate degree with infiltration of lymphoid cells, moderate endothelial damage, mild hepatic parenchymal damage, and minimal myocardial alterations. Interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) produced infiltration mainly of monocytes/macrophages in liver and heart; endothelial cell damage was absent in lung and heart and minimal in liver. Interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1 alpha) caused an incre

Lung Ultrasound for Imaging of B-Lines in Dogs and Cats-A Prospective Study Investigating Agreement between Three Types of Transducers and the Accuracy in Diagnosing Cardiogenic Pulmonary Edema, Pneumonia and Lung Neoplasia.

Transthoracic heart and lung ultrasound (LUS) was performed in 200 dogs and cats with dyspnea to evaluate the agreement between the results obtained using three types of transducers (microconvex, linear, and phased array) and to determine the accuracy of LUS in discriminating between three conditions commonly causing dyspnea in companion animals: cardiogenic pulmonary edema (CPE), pneumonia, and lung neoplasm. The agreement beyond chance was assessed using the weighted Cohen's kappa coefficient (κw). The highest values of κw (>0.9) were observed for the pair of microconvex and linear transduce

Clinical Characteristics of Febrile Outpatients : Possible Involvement of Thyroid Dysfunction in Febrile Tachycardia.

We retrospectively analyzed the cases of 148 febrile patients whose body temperature (BT) was ≥ 37.5°C at our hospital. We categorized them into seven groups; those with bacterial and viral infection, nonspecific inflammation, neoplasm, connective tissue disease (CTD), drug-induced disease, and unidentified causes. Our analysis revealed that the patient's BT at the 1st visit (BT-1st visit) and highest BT during the febrile period (BT-max) differed significantly among all categories except neoplasm. The greatest difference between BT-1st visit and BT-max was highest in the CTD group (1.5°C). Po

Two guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) were presented with a clinical history of a chronic, unresponsive skin disorder with scaling, itching and alopecia. After clinical differential diagnoses (e. g. ectoparasitosis, dermatomycosis, endocrinopathy or allergy) had been ruled out, a skin biopsy revealed an epitheliotropic lymphoma (Mycosis fungoides). The pathohistological examination of the skin showed focal intraepidermal accumulations of tumorous lymphocytes also known as pautrier microabscesses. A full necropsy displayed also metastases in lymph nodes, and additionally tumor cells within skeletal
