INTRODUCTION: Severe dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a viral infection that acts to increase permeability of capillaries, resulting in internal hemorrhage. Linear frequency domain Fourier spectral analysis represents the most published noninvasive tool for diagnosing and assessing health status via calculated heart rate variability (HRV). As such, HRV may be useful in assessing clinical status in DHF patients, but is prone to erroneous results and conclusions due to the influence of the average HR during the time period of HRV assessment (defined as the "prevailing" HR). We tested the hypoth

PURPOSE: This study investigated the acute effects of two structured breathwork methods on autonomic recovery following maximal exertion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomized control trial was conducted with 62 cadets (44 males and 18 females) assigned to three distinct groups: box breathing (BB), cyclic sighing (CS), or spontaneous breathing control. Participants performed a graded exercise test to assess maximal oxygen consumption (VO 2 ). High-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) and heart rate recovery (HRR) were collected to evaluate autonomic recovery and parasympathetic reactivatio

AIMS: Assessment of maximal heart rate is used in clinical practice to determine the degree of beta-blockade during exercise and periods of adrenergic stress. When direct measurement is not possible, indirect methods utilising heart rate prediction equations are commonly used, but their validity in children has been challenged.
METHODS: Retrospective data on 109 healthy children (male 63, 58%; mean age 11.00 ± 3.09) undergoing routine exercise testing were analysed. Measured maximal heart rate was compared with estimates obtained from twenty-two prediction equations.
RESULTS: All prediction

Concentration-QTc (C-QTc) analysis has become a common approach for evaluating proarrhythmic risk and delayed cardiac repolarization of oncology drug candidates. Significant heart rate (HR) change has been associated with certain classes of oncology drugs and can result in over- or underestimation of the true QT prolongation risk. Because oncology early clinical trials typically lack a placebo control arm or time-matched, treatment-free baseline electrocardiogram collection, significant HR change brings additional challenges to C-QTc analysis in the oncology setting. In this work, a spline-bas

We investigated the association between the heart rate-corrected QT interval (QTc interval) measured by standard electrocardiography and heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). From March 1, 2009, to December 12, 2009, 411 patients with T2DM who underwent resting 12-lead electrocardiography and cardiovascular autonomic function testing concurrently without the exclusion criteria were consecutively recruited in this cross-sectional study. Time- and frequency-domain HRV variables were assessed for 5 minutes by beat-to-beat HRV recording. The QT interval was

BACKGROUND: While cardiac pulsations are widely present within physiological and neuroimaging data, it is unknown the extent this information can provide valid and reliable heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV) estimates. The objective of this study was to demonstrate how a slight temporal shift due to an insufficient sampling frequency can impact the validity/accuracy of deriving cardiac metrics.
METHODS: Twenty-two participants were instrumented with valid/reliable industry-standard or open-source electrocardiograms. Five-minute lead II recordings were collected at 1000 Hz in an uprig

Physiologic control of heart rate may be limited by sinus node injury or congenital conduction defects. Control theory may be applied to restore physiologic rate control. Mean right atrial pressure is a likely candidate for incorporation into an artificial control system because of its: (1) stability at rest; (2) tendency to increase during exertion in the rate-limited heart; (3) ability to decrease with increasing heart rate in the rate-limited heart; and (4) accessibility for measurement via the transvenous route. A theoretical right atrial pressure feedback heart rate control system is pres

Detecting vital signs by using a contactless camera-based approach can provide several advantages over traditional clinical methods, such as lower financial costs, reduced visit times, increased comfort, and enhanced safety for healthcare professionals. Specifically, Eulerian Video Magnification (EVM) or Remote Photoplethysmography (rPPG) methods can be utilised to remotely estimate heart rate and respiratory rate biomarkers. In this paper two contactless camera-based health monitoring architectures are developed using EVM and rPPG, respectively; to this end, two different CNNs, (Mediapipe's B

BACKGROUND: Persistent inappropriate sinus tachycardia has been reported as a complication after radiofrequency (RF) ablation of the fast atrioventricular (AV) nodal pathway. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of this complication and its mechanism using heart rate variability analysis.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Time and frequency domain analysis of heart rate was performed in the electrophysiology laboratory immediately before and immediately after RF ablation in 64 patients with supraventricular tachycardia. Ablation targets in these 64 patients included the fast AV nodal p

INTRODUCTION: The rate of Caesarean section has dramatically increased in recent decades. Foetal scalp blood sampling and computer software analysing foetal heart rate detection should help in the decision-making for or against Caesarean section. The main aim of this study was to examine how these 2 factors influence the Caesarean section rate.
METHODS: A national survey of all maternity units in Germany was undertaken using a self-reported questionnaire via crowd sourcing. All variables were collected as categorised data sets. Using these data sets, correlation coefficients were calculated.

Respiratory heart rate variability (RespHRV), also known as Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia, is a healthy variation of Heart Rate (HR) whereby HR increases during inhalation and decreases during exhalation. Although RespHRV has long been used as a prognostic indicator of heart health, several hypotheses have been suggested for its physiological benefits. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that RespHRV minimizes the work done by the left ventricle of the heart while maintaining physiological levels of carbon dioxide in the blood. To do this, we coupled a previously published mathemat

AIM: In this study our aim was to determine the effect of resting heart rate (HR) on the development of coronary collateral circulation (CCC) in patients with chronic total occlusion (CTO).
METHODS: A total of 219 patients who had CTO on their coronary angiography were divided into two groups according to their collateral status. CCC was graded by Rentrop Classification.
RESULTS: Patients with poor collaterals had significantly higher resting HR (79±13.9 vs 74.3±10.5, p=0.005) compared to patients with well collaterals. According to backward logistic regression analyses low HR (OR:0.974, p=0

INTRODUCTION: The phenomenon known as periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) has been linked to a change in autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity and its effect on circulatory regulation. Autonomic dysfunction or dysregulation in patients with PLMS has been described in some domains; however, any relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and PLMS has not been clearly established. HRV analysis is a recognised, non-invasive research method that describes the influence of the ANS on heart rate (HR). The aim of our study was to further investigate the dysregulation of autonomic HR contr

Background and objectives: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) represent serious and prevalent medical conditions. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunctions, expressed by parameters of heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate turbulence (HRT), have been repeatedly associated with depression. The aim of our study was to identify potential HRV and HRT alterations in patients with MDD, before and after selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) therapy, and to observe any correlations between these parameters and the severity of depressive symptoms. Another

The positive contraction stress test (CST) has been looked upon as a predictor of fetal compromise. On this basis, some reports advise routine cesarean delivery on the assumption that the compromised fetus should not tolerate labor. Other authors advocate selective cesarean delivery, based on obstetrical factors such as the inducibility of the cervix and the practicality of fetal monitoring. Finally, an attempted trial of labor may be allowed on the basis of occurrence of fetal heart rate acceleration with fetal movement, or "reactivity." The occurrence of "false positive" tests is not infrequ

The rising prevalence of cardiovascular disease underscores the growing significance of heart failure (HF). Pathophysiological insights into HF highlight the dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), characterized by sympathetic overactivity and diminished vagal tone, impacting cardiovascular function. Heart rate recovery (HRR), a metric measuring the heart's ability to return to its baseline rate post-exertion, plays a crucial role in assessing cardiovascular health. Widely applied across various cardiovascular conditions including HF, coronary artery disease (CAD), and arterial hy

AIMS: Heart failure is a serious condition that often goes undiagnosed in primary care due to the lack of reliable diagnostic tools and the similarity of its symptoms with other diseases. Non-invasive monitoring of heart rate variability (HRV), which reflects the activity of the autonomic nervous system, could offer a novel and accurate way to detect and manage heart failure patients. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of using machine learning techniques on HRV data as a non-invasive biomarker to classify healthy adults and those with heart failure.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We used digit

The goal of this study was to determine whether aggressive heart rate (HR) control in patients with both chronic atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) is associated with improved outcomes. HR control is one of the mainstays in management of patients with AF. However, rate control can be challenging in patients with HF. This study was designed as an interventional clinical trial, using patients with chronic AF and left ventricular systolic dysfunction with left ventricular ejection fraction ≤40% (n=20) as their own controls. Intervention consisted of increasing doses of metoprolol suc

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Intracellular magnesium (icMg) depletion may coexist with normomagnesemia. Mg deficiency (serum and/or intracellular) and decreased heart rate variability (HRV) are common in heart failure (HF). Since both are predictors of poor prognosis, it was of interest to evaluate the effect of Mg supplementation on HRV in patients with HF.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We investigated the effect of Mg administration on HRV in normomagnesemic patients with systolic HF. HRV, serum Mg and icMg were determined before and after 5-week 300 mg/day Mg citrate treatment in 16 patients (group 1). The

AIMS: Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is common in heart failure and ventilation is known to influence heart rate. Our aims were to assess the influence of SDB on heart rate variability (HRV) and to determine whether central sleep apnea (CSA) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) produced different patterns of HRV.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Overnight polysomnography was performed in 21 patients with heart failure and SDB. Two 10-minute segments each of SDB and stable breathing from each patient were visually identified and ECG signal exported for HRV analysis. SDB increased total power (TP) with very
