Effect of phosphogypsum on growth, physiology, and the antioxidative defense system in sunflower seedlings.

Phosphogypsum (PG) is the solid waste product of phosphate fertilizer production and is characterized by high concentrations of salts, heavy metals, and certain natural radionuclides. The work reported in this paper examined the influence of PG amendment on soil physicochemical proprieties, along with its potential impact on several physiological traits of sunflower seedlings grown under controlled conditions. Sunflower seedlings were grown on agricultural soil substrates amended with PG at rates of 0, 2.5, and 5 %. The pH of the soil decreased but electrical conductivity and organic matter, c

Effects of palm and sunflower oils on serum cholesterol and fatty liver in rats.

Palm oil is a common cooking ingredient used in the commercial food industry as the second largest consumed vegetable oil in the world. Because of its lower cost and highly saturated nature, it usually maintains a solid form at room temperature and is used as a cheap substitute for butter. However, there has been a growing health concern about palm oil because of the link between dietary fats and coronary heart disease. Palm oil contains ∼49% saturated fat, a relatively high concentration compared with other vegetable oils. Consequently, high intakes of saturated fat from palm oil induce a lar

A Reductase from the Phytopathogenic Fungus Botrytis cinerea Degrades Plant Antimicrobial Coumarins to Promote Infection.

Phytopathogenic fungi must contend with host immune responses to successfully colonize plants. These responses include the production of heterogenous antimicrobial compounds (phytoalexins), which plants deploy to intoxicate infecting microbes. Among these host defense compounds are the coumarins, a family of aromatic lactones widely present in dicotyledonous plants (dicots). The fungal necrotroph Botrytis cinerea (gray mold) infects a plethora of dicots, causing large losses in the produce, viticulture, and ornamental flower industries. B. cinerea detoxifies numerous host defense compounds to

Protein hydrolysates and xanthine oxidase inhibitory peptides from sunflower capitulum exert antihyperuricemic effects: a comprehensive study based on serum metabolomics and gut microbiota analysis.

Hyperuricemia (HUA), which results from an imbalance between uric acid production and excretion, is a major risk for gout and other metabolic disorders. Food-derived bioactive peptides have attracted increasing attention as dietary candidates for HUA management. However, the relative in vivo efficacy of protein hydrolysates and their derived xanthine oxidase inhibitory peptides remains unclear. In this study, sunflower capitulum protein hydrolysate (SCPH) and its derived peptide, Leu-Gly-Asp-Phe (LGDF) were systematically compared by combining in vitro assays, animal experiments, serum metabol

Physico-Chemical Investigation and Antimicrobial Efficacy of Ozonated Oils: The Case Study of Commercial Ozonated Olive and Sunflower Seed Refined Oils.

Drug resistance represents one of the great plagues of our time worldwide. This largely limits the treatment of common infections and requires the development of new antibiotics or other alternative approaches. Noteworthy, the indiscriminate use of antibiotics is mostly responsible for the selection of mutations that confer drug resistance to microbes. In this regard, recently, ozone has been raising interest for its unique biological properties when dissolved in natural oils. Ozonated oils have been reported to act in a non-specific way on microorganisms hindering the acquisition of advantage

Allergy to sunflower seeds.

A case of oral syndrome after eating sunflower seeds is reported. Sensitization has been probably through inhalant route when using these seeds to feed birds. Skin prick tests with a fresh macerate of sunflower seeds has been clearly positive (greater than histamine control) but commercial extracts have given borderline positivity and specific IgE to sunflower was strongly positive.

Food use and health effects of soybean and sunflower oils.

This review provides a scientific assessment of current knowledge of health effects of soybean oil (SBO) and sunflower oil (SFO). SBO and SFO both contain high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (60.8 and 69%, respectively), with a PUFA:saturated fat ratio of 4.0 for SBO and 6.4 for SFO. SFO contains 69% C18:2n-6 and less than 0.1% C18:3n-3, while SBO contains 54% C18:2n-6 and 7.2% C18:3n-3. Thus, SFO and SBO each provide adequate amounts of C18:2n-6, but of the two, SBO provides C18:3n-3 with a C18:2n-6:C18:3n-3 ratio of 7.1. Epidemiological evidence has suggested an inverse relatio

Treatment of postpartum endometritis induced by multidrug-resistant bacterial infection in dairy cattle by green synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles and in vivo evaluation of its broad spectrum antimicrobial activity in cow uteri.

Postpartum endometritis significantly affects the health and productivity of cattle, causing significant economic loss that is speculated to exceed billions of dollars annually. Treatment of postpartum endometritis, which is linked to various bacterial infections in the uterus after delivery and has an alarmingly high risk of antibiotic treatment failure for unidentified reasons, represents a great challenge. Several studies have demonstrated that various disease complications, such as multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial strains, prolonged infection treatment, and increased mortality risk, hav

Sticholysin II: a pore-forming toxin as a probe to recognize sphingomyelin in artificial and cellular membranes.

Sphingomyelin is a major component of membrane rafts, and also is a precursor of many bioactive molecules. The sphingomyelin plays important biological roles and alterations of its metabolism are the basis of some genetic disorders such as the Niemann Pick disease. A complete understanding of its biological role is frustrated by the lack of efficient tools for its recognition in the cell. Sticholysin II (StnII) is a 20 kDa protein from the sea-anemone Stichodactyla helianthus which shows a cytotoxic activity by forming oligomeric aqueous pores in the cell plasma membrane. A recent NMR analysis

Bee Pollen as a Dietary Mineral Source: In Vitro Bioaccessibility and Health Risk Evaluation.

Pollen, the male gametophyte of flowering plants, is collected by honeybees as a primary source of protein and converted into bee pollen through the enzymatic activity of digestive secretions. The nutrients in bee pollen are available in amounts well beyond those of proteins, comprising macronutrients such as carbohydrates, lipids and dietary fiber, as well as micronutrients such as minerals, vitamins, organic acids, and phenolic compounds. This study aimed to determine the macro and trace mineral content of bee pollen from different botanical and geographical origins, and to assess their bioa

A comparative study on radio frequency inactivation kinetics of Bacillus cereus vegetative cells and A. flavus spores in sunflower seeds: nonlinear modeling and its impact on storage stability.

Sunflower seeds are prone to contamination by foodborne pathogens, posing safety concerns. This study systematically evaluated the inactivation efficacy of radiofrequency heating treatment against Bacillus cereus vegetative cells and A. flavus spores in sunflower seeds, while investigating its impact on seed storage quality. Inactivation kinetics were compared using four models: First-order kinetics, Weibull, Log-Logistic, and Dose-response. Nonlinear models, particularly Log-Logistic and Dose-response, provided superior fits (R2 > 0.98; RMSE<0.27) for both microorganisms, accurately capturing

Metabolomics Reveal the Anti-Hyperuricemia Effects and Mechanisms of Sunflower Head Extract in Hyperuricemia Mice Model.

Hyperuricemia (HUA) is a globally prevalent metabolic disease characterized by excessive production or insufficient excretion of uric acid in the serum. Although several drugs are available for the treatment of HUA, they have been associated with undesirable side effects. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the therapeutic effects of sunflower head extract (KHE) on HUA in a mouse model and explore its potential mechanisms. All mice were randomly divided into three groups: Normal control (NC, 0.5% CMC-Na), HUA model (MD, yeast extract paste 20 g/kg), and KHE treatment group (KHE, 1 g/kg). Bi

Sunflower seed-specific HSFA9 induces persistent chromatin accessibility during seed-to-seedling developmental transition.

HSFA9 (A9) is a seed-specific transcription factor that contributes to seed longevity in sunflower. A9 also links the regulation of seed maturation with that of early seedling greening through its effects on various light receptors. Transcriptomic analyses of transgenic tobacco seeds suggested that A9 might affect chromatin remodeling. Here, using formaldehyde-assisted isolation of regulatory elements (FAIRE) and micrococcal nuclease digestion, we analyzed the A9 effects on chromatin accessibility shortly after seed imbibition in the proximal promoter region of developmentally relevant genes,

Survival of Salmonella during Production of Partially Sprouted Pumpkin, Sunflower, and Chia Seeds Dried for Direct Consumption.

Ready-to-eat foods based on dried partially sprouted seeds have been associated with foodborne salmonellosis. Whereas research has focused on the potential for Salmonella initially present in or on seeds to grow and survive during fresh sprout production, little is known about the potential for growth and survival of Salmonella associated with seeds that have been partially sprouted and dried. The goal of this study was to determine the growth of Salmonella during soaking for partial germination of pumpkin, sunflower, and chia seeds and subsequent survival during drying and storage. Determination of traces of several pesticides in sunflower oil using organic phase immuno electrodes (OPIEs).

Testing for traces of different pesticides (triazinic, organophosphates and chlorurates), present in hydrophobic matrices such as sunflower oil was checked using new immunosensors working in organic solvent mixtures (OPIEs). The competitive process took place in an n-hexane-chloroform 75% (V/V) mixture, while the subsequent final enzymatic measurement was performed in decane using tert-butylhydroperoxide as substrate of the enzymatic reaction. A Clark electrode was used as transducer and peroxidase enzyme as marker. A linear response of between about 10 nM and 4 μM was usually obtained in the

Characterization and quantification of proteins in lecithins.

Several methods for extraction and quantification of proteins from lecithins were compared. Extraction with hexane-2-propanol-water followed by amino acid analysis is the most suitable method for isolation and quantification of proteins from lecithins. The detection limit of the method is 15 mg protein/kg lecithin, and the quantification limit is 50 mg protein/kg. The relative repeatability limits for samples containing 0-500 and 500-5000 mg protein/kg sample were 12.6 and 7.5%, respectively. The protein recovery ranged between 101 and 123%. The protein content has been determined in different
