Impact of water mass mixing on the biogeochemistry and microbiology of the Northeast Atlantic Deep Water.

The extent to which water mass mixing contributes to the biological activity of the dark ocean is essentially unknown. Using a multiparameter water mass analysis, we examined the impact of water mass mixing on the nutrient distribution and microbial activity of the Northeast Atlantic Deep Water (NEADW) along an 8000 km long transect extending from 62°N to 5°S. Mixing of four water types (WT) and basin scale mineralization from the site where the WT where defined to the study area explained up to 95% of the variability in the distribution of inorganic nutrients and apparent oxygen utilization.

Seaweed-associated heterotrophic bacteria: new paradigm of prospective anti-infective and anticancer agents.

Ever since the development of the first antibiotic compound with anticancer potential, researchers focused on isolation and characterization of prospective microbial natural products with potential anti-infective and anticancer activities. The present work describes the production of bioactive metabolites by heterotrophic bacteria associated with intertidal seaweeds with potential anti-infective and anticancer activities. The bacteria were isolated in a culture-dependent method and were identified as Shewanella algae MTCC 12715 (KX272635) and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MTCC 12716 (KX272634) ba

Application of low-intensity ultrasound to enhance simultaneous nitrification/iron-based autotrophic denitrification.

Intermittent ultrasound with an intensity of 0.2 W/ml was applied during simultaneous nitrification/iron-based autotrophic denitrification to evaluate its impacts on total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency and microbial characteristics during low carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N) wastewater treatment. At an optimal dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration of 1.2 mg/L, the TN removal rate was 91 ± 4%, and the TN concentration in the effluent decreased by 31% owing to the ultrasound treatment. In addition, the number of iron-compounds that formed in the sludge and wastewater increased by 55% and 37%, respec

Unique pioneer microbial communities exposed to volcanic sulfur dioxide.

Newly exposed volcanic substrates contain negligible amounts of organic materials. Heterotrophic organisms in newly formed ecosystems require bioavailable carbon and nitrogen that are provided from CO2 and N2 fixation by pioneer microbes. However, the knowledge of initial ecosystem developmental mechanisms, especially the association between microbial succession and environmental change, is still limited. This study reports the unique process of microbial succession in fresh basaltic ash, which was affected by long-term exposure to volcanic sulfur dioxide (SO2). Here we compared the microbial

Class 1 integrase, sulfonamide and tetracycline resistance genes in wastewater treatment plant and surface water.

Wastewater treatment plants are considered hot spots for multiplication and dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and resistance genes. In this study, we determined the presence of class 1 integron integrase and genes conferring resistance to tetracyclines and sulfonamides in the genomes of culturable bacteria isolated from a wastewater treatment plant and the river that receives the treated wastewater. Moreover, using PCR-based metagenomic approach, we quantified intI1, tet and sul genes. Wastewater treatment caused the decrease in the total number of culturable heterotrophs and bact

Biodegradation of Kupferschiefer black shale organic matter (Fore-Sudetic Monocline, Poland) by indigenous microorganisms.

This study provides the first evidence for the direct biodegradation of persistent organic matter extracted from the organic-rich polymetallic black shale ore Kupferschiefer, one of the most important sources of metals in the world. It was demonstrated that an enriched community of indigenous heterotrophic microorganisms isolated from black shale grown under aerobic conditions could utilize shale organic matter as the sole carbon and energy source. Colonization of shale organic matter was observed. The main biodegradation intermediates and products such as phosphonic acid dioctadecyl ester and

The share of electrochemical reduction, hydrogenotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification in nitrogen removal in rotating electrobiological contactor (REBC) treating wastewater from soilless cultivation systems.

There is a growing global environmental problem of agricultural wastewater from soilless plant cultivation systems. In most countries dominate open fertilization systems, in which excess of nutrient solution is discharged in an uncontrolled way into the ground inside greenhouses or adjacent areas. Wastewater from such systems is characterized by a very high concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds and their discharge into the environment causes significant pollution of the water and soil environment. The goal of the research was to determine the contribution of electrochemical reduct

Removal of steroid estrogens from municipal wastewater in a pilot scale expanded granular sludge blanket reactor and anaerobic membrane bioreactor.

Anaerobic treatment of municipal wastewater offers the prospect of a new paradigm by reducing aeration costs and minimizing sludge production. It has been successfully applied in warm climates, but does not always achieve the desired outcomes in temperate climates at the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) values of municipal crude wastewater. Recently the concept of 'fortification' has been proposed to increase organic strength and has been demonstrated at the laboratory and pilot scale treating municipal wastewater at temperatures of 10-17°C. The process treats a proportion of the flow anaerobic

Probing the origin of the metabolic precursor of the CO ligand in the catalytic center of [NiFe] hydrogenase.

The O(2)-tolerant [NiFe] hydrogenases of Ralstonia eutropha are capable of H(2) conversion in the presence of ambient O(2). Oxygen represents not only a challenge for catalysis but also for the complex assembling process of the [NiFe] active site. Apart from nickel and iron, the catalytic center contains unusual diatomic ligands, namely two cyanides (CN(-)) and one carbon monoxide (CO), which are coordinated to the iron. One of the open questions of the maturation process concerns the origin and biosynthesis of the CO group. Isotope labeling in combination with infrared spectroscopy revealed t

Toward sustainable phycocyanin production using halo-alkaliphilic cyanobacteria: from direct air capture of carbon dioxide to biorefinery.

Phycocyanin is a natural blue pigment from cyanobacteria such as Limnospira platensis, also known as "Spirulina." Its production is costly and faces sustainability challenges due to water needs, carbon dioxide emissions, and lack of operational stability. Here, we review the use of halo-alkaliphilic cyanobacteria to overcome these challenges. This review synthesizes conceptual innovations that were proposed and tested experimentally previously, resulting in the presentation of a complete bioprocess for phycocyanin production. These innovations are: (1) the use of a pH above 10.5 to implement d

Direct and indirect effects of copper-contaminated sediments on the functions of model freshwater ecosystems.

Copper is acutely toxic to, and directly affects, primary producers and decomposers, which are key players in essential processes such as the nutrient cycle in freshwater ecosystems. Even though the indirect effects of metals (for example effects due to changes in species interactions) may be more common than direct effects, little is known about the indirect effects of copper on primary producers and decomposers. The effects of copper on phytoplankton, macrophytes, periphyton and organic matter decomposition in an outdoor lentic mesocosm facility were assessed, and links between the responses

Chlorite-Mediated Regulation of Nitrite Accumulation and Nitrogen Removal in Integrated Partial Denitrification/Anammox Biofilter.

Achieving stable and efficient nitrite accumulation in integrated partial denitrification/anammox (PD/A) processes is typically constrained by substrate competition among microorganisms, posing a significant challenge for large-scale engineering applications. This study proposes a novel strategy for regulating nitrogen transformation pathways using chlorite (ClO2-) as a bioregulator, by inducing denitrification to remain at the nitrite stage and thereby providing a stable substrate supply for the anammox process. In the continuous-flow PD/A biofilter, the increase of ClO2- concentration from 0

Continuous autotrophic production of alcohols with Clostridium autoethanogenum LAbrini in a submerged membrane bioreactor.

Due to the generally low growth rates of acetogens, conventional batch and continuously operated syngas fermentation processes in suspension cultures, e.g., stirred tank bioreactors, typically result in low cell concentrations and, thus, limited volumetric productivities (space-time yields). To increase cell concentrations in syngas fermentations, a continuously operated submerged microfiltration membrane bioreactor (MBR) was applied on a L-scale with C. autoethanogenum LAbrini for the production of alcohols. Cell retention was achieved by inserting a sintered metal microfiltration rod into a

Revealing the Role of Partial Denitrification in the Mainstream Single-Stage Partial Nitrification/Anammox Process: Experimental Evidence and Kinetic Modeling Insights.

The application of the single-stage partial nitrification/anammox (PN/A) process remains challenging under mainstream conditions. A continuous-flow single-stage PN/A reactor treating low-strength ammonium (NH4 +) wastewater without influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) was investigated, and a modified kinetic model was developed to clarify the role of partial denitrification (PD) in the presence of influent COD. Long-term operation showed that oxygen control alone could not substantially improve reactor performance. At dissolved oxygen (DO) levels of 0.20, 0.10, and 0.15 mg O2/L, the NH4 + rem

Removal of nitrate and pesticides from groundwater by nano zero-valent iron injection pulses under biostimulation and bioaugmentation scenarios in continuous-flow packed soil columns.

This study evaluates the NO3- removal from groundwater through Heterotrophic Denitrification (HDN) (promoted by the addition of acetate and/or an inoculum rich in denitrifiers) and Abiotic Chemical Nitrate Reduction (ACNR) (promoted by pulse injection of zerovalent iron nanoparticles (nZVI)). HDN and ACNR were applied, separately or combined, in packed soil column experiments to complement the scarce research on pulse-injected nZVI in continuous-flow systems mimicking a Well-based Denitrification Barrier. Together with NO3-, the removal of two common pesticides (dieldrin and lindane) was evalu

Genomic Insights into the Ecological Role and Evolution of a Novel Thermoplasmata Order, "Candidatus Sysuiplasmatales".

Recent omics studies have provided invaluable insights into the metabolic potential, adaptation, and evolution of novel archaeal lineages from a variety of extreme environments. We utilized a genome-resolved metagenomic approach to recover eight medium- to high-quality metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) that likely represent a new order ("Candidatus Sysuiplasmatales") in the class Thermoplasmata from mine tailings and acid mine drainage (AMD) sediments sampled from two copper mines in South China. 16S rRNA gene-based analyses revealed a narrow habitat range for these uncultured archaea limite

Interannual versus spatial variability in pelagic and benthic set up of particulate organic carbon in a glaciated Antarctic fjord.

Rapid warming along the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) is altering glacier dynamics, freshwater inputs and biogeochemical processes. This study assessed how interannual and spatial variability influence the transfer and composition of particulate organic carbon (POC) from the pelagic to the benthic environment within a glaciated fjord of the WAP. Surveys were conducted over four consecutive years (2022-2025). Biogeochemical markers, isotopic signatures and elemental analysis were used to evaluate sources, quality and trophic status of suspended and sedimentary POC in Collins Bay. Surface su

Overlooked siderophore producers favor ammonium oxidation in global wastewater treatment plants.

BACKGROUND: Iron is essential for biological nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), as a significant portion of microbial nitrogen-transforming enzymes require iron. However, iron bioavailability is a global challenge for nitrogen removal microbes in WWTPs, where it often exists in insoluble forms due to its complexation with various wastewater constituents. RESULTS: Combined laboratory experiment and metagenomic analysis of 52 global WWTPs, we found that siderophore-producing bacteria (SPB) were previously uncharacterized dominant members in activated sludge. SPB enhance th

Microbial contamination control mechanism in lipid production using distillery wastewater and oleaginous yeast - Antimicrobial compounds in wastewater as a double-edged sword.

Microbial contamination and the high expense of sterilization are the key factors limiting the application of resource recovery in processes such as producing lipids (can be converted to biodiesel via transesterification) from wastewater. This study was conducted to study the succession of contaminating and indigenous microorganisms, analyze the mechanism and propose a control strategy for undesirable microorganisms in the non-sterile lipid production process using distillery wastewater and oleaginous yeast. In the early stage, indigenous microorganisms (Pichia, Saccharomyces, Acetobacter and

Multi-level osmoadaptation strategies of filamentous cyanobacteria within oxygenic photogranules under high salinity stress.

Filamentous cyanobacteria (FC) are key structural and functional components of oxygenic photogranules (OPGs) for saline wastewater treatment. However, how FC maintain cellular osmotic balance while supporting community stability under salinity stress remains poorly understood. Here, we integrated long-term reactor operation, physiological characterization, and multi-omics analyses to elucidate the multi-level osmoadaptation strategies of dominant FC within OPGs. Despite stepwise increases in salinity, OPGs maintained stable pollutant removal and showed enhanced FC growth, polysaccharide (PS) p
