Identifying increased risk of post-infarct people with diabetes using multi-lag Tone-Entropy analysis.

Diabetes mellitus is associated with multi-organ system dysfunction. One of the key causative factors is the increased blood sugar level that leads to an increase in free radical activity and organ damage including the cardiovascular and nervous system. Heart rhythm is extrinsically modulated by the autonomic nervous system and cardiac autonomic neuropathy or dysautonomia has been shown to lead to sudden cardiac death in people with diabetes due to the decrease in heart rate variability (HRV). Current algorithms for determining HRV describe only beat-to-beat variation and therefore do not cons

Long-term fasting-induced parasympathetic and sympathetic autonomic nervous system modulation in a subgroup of the GENESIS study.

Parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems are known to be modulated during long-term fasting, but temporal dynamics and persistence post-fasting are unclear. We analyzed daily heart rate variability (HRV), as a reflection of autonomic nervous system balance, as an exploratory analysis, in 16 participants from the GENESIS trial following the Buchinger fasting protocol (12 days of ~250 kcal/day). HRV was assessed via Polar H10 sensors daily 7 days before, during and 7 days after fasting. Overall, fasting led to an increase in parasympathetic activity, as indicated by higher root mean squar

Autonomic Nervous Regulation was Associated with Sleep Quality Among Peritoneal Dialysis Patients.

BACKGROUND: The issue of compromised sleep quality among patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), particularly those undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD), is notably pronounced. Dialysis patients exhibit significant alterations in cardiac autonomic nerve activity. However, the relationship between autonomic nervous system activity and sleep remains inadequately elucidated. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled adult maintenance PD patients in our center. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. Heart rate variability (HRV) and Skin sympathetic ne

Exploring psychophysiological indices of disruptive behavior disorders and their subtypes of aggression.

BACKGROUND: Psychophysiological measures of arousal are often considered as potential biomarkers for disruptive behavior disorder (DBD). Nevertheless, the evidence is mixed, possibly reflecting the heterogeneity of DBD and different subtypes of aggression. Additionally, arousal measures of the central nervous system (e.g. electroencephalogram: EEG) are underrepresented compared to peripheral ones (heart rate: HR; skin conductance: SC). METHODS: We recorded HR, SC, and EEG (frequency band power at three electrodes Fz, Cz, Pz) in 49 participants with DBD, and 15 typically developing peers durin

Pesticide Exposure and Its Association with Parkinson's Disease: A Case-Control Analysis.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex disorder that arises from genetic and environmental factors. The current investigation endeavors to investigate the role of exposure to organochlorine (OCPs) and organophosphate pesticides (OPPs), recognized as the main environmental elements, in the genesis of PD. In this case-control study, 29 PD patients and 51 healthy subjects were involved. Gas chromatography was performed to measure the serum levels of organochlorine chemicals (2,4-DDT, 4,4-DDT, 2,4-DDE, 4,4-DDE, α-HCH, β-HCH, and γ-HCH). Furthermore, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, arylesteras

Comparative evaluation of adenosine deaminase activity in cerebral cortex and hippocampus of young and adult rats: effect of garlic extract (Allium sativum L.) on their susceptibility to heavy metal exposure.

Adenosine plays an important neuromodulatory role in the central nervous system, and adenosine deaminase is an important enzyme in the degradation of adenine nucleotides. Methylmercury is the most prevalent form of mercury found in the environment. Methylmercury neurotoxicity has been correlated to the production of reactive oxygen species. In this study, its potential pathogenic effects were investigated in vitro in cerebral cortex and hippocampus of rats. We first observed that adenosine deaminase activity was higher in young rat brains when compared to the 60-day-old rats and was higher in

Physiological stress responses predict sexual functioning and satisfaction differently in women who have and have not been sexually abused in childhood.

Physiological responses to sexual stimuli may contribute to the increased rate of sexual problems seen in women with childhood sexual abuse (CSA) histories. We compared two physiological stress responses as predictors of sexual function and satisfaction, sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activation and cortisol in women with (CSA, N = 136) and without CSA histories (NSA, N = 102). In CSA survivors, cortisol response to sexual stimuli did not significantly predict sexual functioning; however, in NSA women, cortisol increases were associated with poorer sexual functioning, and decreases with high

Terminal cardiac electrical activity in pediatric patients.

Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is a frequently reported terminal cardiac electrical activity in adults. Such data are unavailable for pediatric patients. Terminal cardiac electrical activity determined in 100 pediatric patients was bradycardic arrest throughout the death process in 88% of newborns, 67% of infants, and 64% of children. Although bradycardic arrest was more common, the incidence of ventricular tachyarrhythmias was higher in patients who had congenital heart disease, who had received cardiopulmonary resuscitation, who were beyond the neonatal period, and/or who weighed greater than

High-fat diet during lactation, as opposed to during adolescence or gestation, programs cardiometabolic and autonomic dysfunctions in adult offspring.

The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) concept has been established for three decades. Many studies have shown that, besides pregnancy, other plastic phases (mainly preconception, lactation, and infancy-adolescence) are also sensitive to environmental changes, including nutritional conditions, that can program health or disease later in life. This study compared the susceptibility of the gestation, lactation and adolescence to a high-fat diet (HFD) intervention to program rats into autonomic nervous system imbalance and cardiometabolic dysfunction in adulthood. Four groups of

Illusory self-motion and motion sickness: a model for brain-gut interactions and nausea.

Motion sickness provides a unique setting for the study of nausea. Studies of illusory self-motion have linked nausea and objective measures of gastric dysrhythmias and the stress hormones vasopressin and epinephrine. Electrogastrographic methods utilize Ag-AgCl electrodes placed on the abdominal surface in the epigastric region to record electrogastrograms (EGGs), a noninvasive measure of gastric myoelectrical activity. The EGG frequencies of interest are the normal range (2.4-3.6 cpm), tachygastrias (3.6-9.9 cpm), and bradygastrias (1.0-2.4 cpm), and duodenal respiratory frequencies (10.0-15

The effects of physical vibration on heart rate variability as a measure of drowsiness.

UNLABELLED: We investigated the effects of low frequency whole body vibration on heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of autonomic nervous system activation that differentiates between stress and drowsiness. Fifteen participants underwent two simulated driving tasks for 60 min each: one involved whole-body 4-7 Hz vibration delivered through the car seat, and one involved no vibration. The Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), a subjective measure of drowsiness, demonstrated a significant increase in drowsiness during the task. Within 15-30 min of exposure to vibration, autonomic (sympathetic)

Determinants of left ventricular structure and mass in young subjects with sympathetic over-activity. The Tecumseh Offspring Study.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we tested the hypothesis that sympathetic over-activity may cause metabolic abnormalities and affect left ventricular (LV) structure and mass early in life. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: The study population consisted of 111 healthy adolescents and young adults living in Tecumseh, Michigan (USA). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Correlations of LV mass and structure with several clinical variables in relation to the activity of the sympathetic nervous system. METHODS: Power spectrum density estimates of heart rate variability were calculated with an auto-regressive method, and subje

Higher sympathetic nerve activity during ventricular (VVI) than during dual-chamber (DDD) pacing.

OBJECTIVES: We determined the short-term effects of single-chamber ventricular pacing and dual-chamber atrioventricular (AV) pacing on directly measured sympathetic nerve activity. BACKGROUND: Dual-chamber AV cardiac pacing results in greater cardiac output and lower systemic vascular resistance than does single-chamber ventricular pacing. However, it is unclear whether these hemodynamic advantages result in less sympathetic nervous system outflow. METHODS: In 13 patients with a dual-chamber pacemaker, we recorded the electrocardiogram, noninvasive arterial pressure (Finapres), respiration a

Stress-specific opioid modulation of haemodynamic counter-regulation.

1. The haemodynamic and cardiovascular responses to stress, in addition to being under control of the autonomic nervous system, are also under opiate modulation. Our studies have provided evidence for activation of the endogenous opioid system in haemorrhagic shock, sepsis and trauma. Furthermore, we have demonstrated that both central and systemic opiate administration to naïve rats result in marked alterations in haemodynamic responses, which are associated with activation of the sympathetic nervous system. 2. Because of the ubiquitous presence of opiate receptors in both the central nervous

The macrophage in acute neural injury: changes in cell numbers over time and levels of cytokine production in mammalian central and peripheral nervous systems.

We evaluated the timing and density of ED-1-positive macrophage accumulation (ED 1 is the primary antibody for the macrophage) and measured cytokine production by macrophages in standardized compression injuries to the spinal cord and sciatic nerves of individual rats 3, 5, 10 and 21 days post-injury. The actual site of mechanical damage to the nervous tissue, and a more distant site where Wallerian degeneration had occurred, were evaluated in both the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and the central nervous system (CNS) at these time points. The initial accumulation of activated macrophages wa

Management of CNS disease in ALK-positive non-small cell lung cancer: Is whole brain radiotherapy still needed?

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive non-small cell lung cancer (3 to 5% of all non-small cell lung cancers) carries a particularly high risk of central nervous system dissemination (60% to 90%). As the use of ALK inhibitors improves treatment outcomes over chemotherapy, the determent of central nervous system metastases has become an increasingly relevant therapeutic dilemma considering young age and possible extended overall survival. The goal of brain metastases management is to optimize both overall survival and quality of life, with the high priority of neurocognitive function preser

Synthesis and Evaluation of in Vivo Anti-hypothermic Effect of the N- and C-Terminus Modified Thyrotropin-Releasing Hormone Mimetic: [(4S,5S)-(5-Methyl-2-oxooxazolidine-4-yl)carbonyl]-[3-(thiazol-4-yl)-L-alanyl]-L-prolinamide.

We explored orally effective thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) mimetics, which show high central nervous system effects in structure-activity relationship studies based on in vivo antagonistic activity on reserpine-induced hypothermia (anti-hypothermic effect) in mice starting from TRH. This led us to the TRH mimetic: [(4S,5S)-(5-methyl-2-oxooxazolidine-4-yl)carbonyl]-[3-(thiazol-4-yl)-L-alanyl]-L-prolinamide 1, which shows a higher anti-hypothermic effect compared with that of TRH after oral administration. We next attempted further chemical modification of the N- and C-terminus of 1 to fin

Independent association of palpitation with vasomotor symptoms and anxiety in middle-aged women.

OBJECTIVE: Palpitation, or the sensation of rapid or irregular heartbeats, is common in menopausal women; however, the precise underlying mechanisms are unknown. We aimed to investigate factors associated with palpitation in middle-aged women. METHODS: Medical records of 394 women aged 40 to 59 years (108 premenopausal, 85 perimenopausal, and 201 postmenopausal) were analyzed cross-sectionally. Palpitation severity was estimated based on responses to the Menopausal Symptom Scale. Effects of background characteristics, including age, menopausal status, body composition, cardiovascular paramete

Physiological and psychological responses of young males during spring-time walks in urban parks.

BACKGROUND: It is widely believed that contact with the natural environment can improve physical and mental health. Urban green spaces may provide city residents with these benefits; however, there is a lack of empirical field research on the health benefits of urban parks. METHODS: This field experiment was performed in May. Seventeen males aged 21.2 ± 1.7 years (mean ± standard deviation) were instructed to walk predetermined 15-minute courses in an urban park and a nearby city area (control). Heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV) were measured to assess physiological responses. The s

Lymphadenopathy in systemic lupus erythematosus. Prevalence and relation to disease manifestations.

Lymphadenopathy (LAP) is a frequent sign in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Yet, data concerning its relation to the various disease manifestations are scarce or absent. LAP was present in 23/90 (26%) SLE patients. Patients with LAP had significantly more constitutional symptoms of fatigue, fever and weight loss, more cutaneous symptoms and signs, a higher rate of hepatomegaly and splenomegaly, increased anti-dsDNA antibodies and decreased complement levels. Disease activity index was higher among patients with LAP, as was the intake of steroids and antimalaria medications. There was no di
