BACKGROUND: Individuals with hoarding disorder exhibit heightened attachment to objects, but little is known about possible drivers of object attachment and associated object saving behaviors. Theory and preliminary evidence posit that the heightened object attachment characteristic of hoarding disorder may be partially explained by the experience of vivid, 'Proustian' memories related to objects.
AIMS: The current study piloted a novel Proustian Memory Task to examine whether self-reported vividness of memories associated with cherished objects, mundane objects, and non-objects was associate

Hoarding is a common problem behavior worldwide and is detrimental to the physical and mental health of individuals and groups. Currently, effective interventions for hoarding are cognitive-behavioral therapies, but their post-intervention efficacy is questionable, and the available research does not examine the mediating variables of the effects of interventions on clinical outcomes. Moreover, current research on hoarding has focused on Western countries. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the efficacy of other forms of cognitive behavioral therapy on hoarding as well as other psycholo

Sleep problems are associated with many different forms of psychopathology in late life; however, there is currently a gap in the literature on the association between sleep quality and hoarding in older adults. This secondary data analysis of 40 older adults with hoarding disorder examined the association between sleep and hoarding, change in sleep disturbance following treatment, and the impact of sleep on treatment response. Sleep disturbance was correlated with hoarding severity, and this association remained significant when controlling for inability to sleep in a bed due to clutter in a

An estimated 2-6% of the general population is thought to suffer from clinically significant hoarding symptoms, with 80-90% engaging in excessive acquisition. Minimal research has examined the excessive acquisition component of hoarding disorder (HD). Many individuals with HD have limited insight into their condition and are reluctant to seek help, making prevalence estimates difficult to obtain. Online classified advertisement networks provide a venue to list items for sale, often for free. We examined the prevalence of hoarding behaviours among users of online classified advertisements. OBJECTIVES: Hoarding disorder is a debilitating and severe psychiatric condition. Research has implicated interpersonal factors as contributing to the development and maintenance of the disorder. Emerging evidence has suggested that aggression and anger-related concepts may contribute to these interpersonal difficulties, but aggression has only been measured thus far through self-report, which is limited by responding biases.
METHODS: In the present study, we examined the associations between self-reported hoarding symptoms and two forms of aggression using both questionnaire measures and a n

Early life adversity, ranging from material deprivation and parental dysfunction to abusive and life-threatening events, has been associated with hoarding symptom severity. Moreover, both victims of early life adversity and individuals with hoarding disorder have been found to have a higher tendency toward detail-oriented visual processing. This study aimed to investigate the role of detail-oriented visual processing in the relationship between early life adversity and hoarding-related dysfunction. Childhood exposure to life adversity, hoarding symptom severity, and emotional attachment to pos

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a multifaceted problem that presents challenges both for understanding its dimensions and for developing effective treatments. We are grateful to have known Dr. Stanley J. Rachman and his incredibly thoughtful approach to clinical psychology and research on anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) and their treatment. His work has helped set the stage for our own efforts to study this challenging condition. The discussion below reviews a range of mysteries we and others have encountered in working with people who exhibit HD symptoms. Of particular interest to us

INTRODUCTION: Compulsive buying (CB) is currently classified as an impulse control disorder (ICD) not otherwise classified. Compulsive buying prevalence is estimated at around 5% of the general population. There is controversy about whether CB should be classified as an ICD, a subsyndromal bipolar disorder (BD), or an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) akin to a hoarding syndrome. To further investigate the appropriate classification of CB, we compared patients with CB, BD, and OCD for impulsivity, affective instability, hoarding, and other OCD symptoms.

Hoarding Disorder (HD) is a mental disorder characterized by persistent difficulties discarding or parting with possessions, often resulting in cluttered living spaces, distress, and impairment. Its etiology is largely unknown, but twin studies suggest that it is moderately heritable. In this study, we pooled phenotypic and genomic data from seven international cohorts (N = 27,537 individuals) and conducted a genome wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis of parent- or self-reported hoarding symptoms (HS). We followed up the results with gene-based and gene-set analyses, as well as leave-o

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric comorbidity and self-reported cognitive dysfunction are common among individuals with hoarding disorder (HD). However, common patterns of co-occurring neuropsychiatric symptoms, and their potential impact on the clinical manifestation of hoarding, including functional impairment, are not well-established.
METHODS: Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify and characterize distinct neuropsychiatric symptom subgroups among 7606 adult internet-based research participants who reported experiencing social impairment due to household clutter. An additional 1129 partic

Hoarding disorder was recently recognized as an independent diagnosis; it is characterized by the accumulation of objects causing a functional impairment and is commonly associated with increased risk of injury or death. Limited data exist about deaths of persons found in hoarding environments. This study investigated the characteristics and circumstances surrounding deaths found in "hoarding" environments. Using the electronic record management system, a search for the term "hoard" from 2017 to 2018 identified 138 cases. The mean age was 67 years, 56% were male, 76% were White, and 86% of dec

PURPOSE: Hoarding disorder (HD) involves difficulty discarding clutter. Existing treatments for HD (including cognitive-behavioral therapy [CBT]) yield only partial symptom reduction. Identifying factors that contribute to hoarding may inform potential treatment mechanisms. One such factor is intolerance of uncertainty (IU), the tendency to maladaptively respond to the unknown via fear, discomfort, and avoidance. While IU has been linked to hoarding symptoms, its role in treatment outcomes remains understudied.
METHODS: 41 adults with HD completed the Buried in Treasures (BIT+) Workshop (a 16

The Hoarding Rating Scale, Self Report (HRS-SR) is a 5-item assessment developed to ascertain the presence and severity of hoarding symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the validity of an online adaptation of the HRS-SR in a remote, unsupervised internet sample of 23,214 members of the Brain Health Registry (BHR), an online research registry that evaluates and longitudinally monitors cognition, medical and psychiatric health status. Convergent validity was assessed among a sub-sample of 1,183 participants who completed additional, remote measures of self-reported hoarding behaviors. Structur

BACKGROUND: Hoarding disorder is characterized by a persistent inability to part with possessions due to a perceived need to keep them, regardless of their actual value. Arabic-speaking populations currently lack a validated tool specifically designed to assess hoarding symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to translate, adapt, and validate the Hoarding Rating Scale-Self Report (HRS-SR) into the Arabic-language.
METHODS: The study employed the gold standard approach to translation, involving forward translation by independent translators and back translation review. We conducted a cross-sect

OBJECTIVES: Extant research on hoarding has largely taken place in urban settings, preventing generalizations to rural communities. Thus, our objective was to provide a profile of late life rural hoarding.
METHODS: We used data from a survey distributed at community presentations (N = 97) and data from baseline assessments administered as part of larger treatment outcome studies for geriatric hoarding (N = 55).
RESULTS: On the community sample, 33% of participants scored above the clinical cutoff on a brief screening measure. Of the older adults diagnosed with hoarding disorder, 65% lived wi

The messy house syndrome (Diogenes syndrome) is present when, owing to a disordering of the personality structure, a person is unable to keep order, for example, in the household or his finances. Such persons are also referred to as "messies". Useless objects are hoarded in such quantities that the apartment can no longer be lived in. In many cases, the disorder is due to an underlying mental problem such as dementia, schizophrenia, ADHS or obsessive-compulsive disorders. The Prader-Willi syndrome is also associated with an unusual compulsion to hoard things or food. In the first instance, tre

Motives for acquiring and saving objects are closely linked to object attachment, but the nature of these associations has not been established. A better understanding of the motives for acquiring and saving possessions and how they relate to object attachment may reveal insights into the underpinnings of hoarding disorder. In turn, these insights can aid in identifying optimal targets for interventions for hoarding problems. In this paper, we propose a simple theoretical model of the dynamic associations among motives to acquire objects, object attachment, and motives to save objects, grounde

BACKGROUND: The cognitions and emotions of people prone to hoarding are key components of the dominant cognitive behavioural model of hoarding disorder.
AIMS: This study sought to use Q-methodology to explore the thoughts and feelings of people that are prone to hoarding, to identify whether distinct clusters of participants could be found.
METHOD: A 49-statement Q-set was generated following thematic analysis of initial interviews (n = 2) and a review of relevant measures and literature. Forty-one participants with problematic hoarding met various study inclusion criteria and completed the

Hoarding disorder is characterised by both the distress associated with discarding and the resulting accumulation of possessions that clutter the home environment, and represents a substantial public health and social problem, requiring an effective multi-agency response. Although a recognised psychiatric condition since 2013, hoarding disorder is under-recognised within mental health treatment provision, and evidence-based treatment pathways are lacking. This study aimed to explore multi-agency working in practice and similarities and differences in how hoarding support is perceived across a

This paper reports on implications of bipolar disorder (BD) co-morbidity in 120 children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) (84 males, 36 females, age 13.7 +/- 2.8 years), diagnosed using a clinical interview according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV) criteria, and naturalistically followed-up for 12 +/- 6 months. The aim of this naturalistic, retrospective study was to explore the effect of BD co-morbidity, disentangling it from other co-occurring variables, namely the co-morbidity with disruptive behavior disorders.
