Home environment design theories and models related to the occupational performance, participation and well-being of people with intellectual disabilities: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Access to housing for people with intellectual disabilities is often constrained by lack of choice, control and can often be inappropriate or unsafe. To enable people to remain at home and participate in their occupations, a collation and review of theories and models supporting good home environment design offers a view from which practice could be advanced. METHOD: A scoping review was used to map the literature on theories and models on home environmental designing, which can have influence on the occupational performance and participation of people with intellectual disabiliti

Gait pattern analysis in the home environment as a key factor for the reliable assessment of shunt responsiveness in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: The identification of patients with gait disturbance associated with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is challenging. This is due to the multifactorial causes of gait disturbance in elderly people and the single moment examination of laboratory tests. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess whether the use of gait sensors in a patient's home environment could help establish a reliable diagnostic tool to identify patients with iNPH by differentiating them from elderly healthy controls (EHC). METHODS: Five wearable inertial measurement units were used in 11 patients with iNPH

Prevention of adolescent stimulant drug use: Do the home life environment and extracurricular activities influence this? Findings from the Irish Planet Youth Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Stimulant drug use during adolescence (e.g., cocaine or ecstasy) can lead to a myriad of adverse health effects, but it remains uncertain how the home life environment and involvement in structured extracurricular activities may correlate with teenage stimulant use. METHODS: We conducted an analysis utilising data from the 2020 Planet Youth survey, an anonymous questionnaire administered to school-going adolescents in the western region of Ireland. All adolescents with complete demographic information on age, gender and drug use were included in the analysis. Multivariable-adjus

The rearing environment and the risk for alcohol use disorder: a Swedish national high-risk home-reared v. adopted co-sibling control study.

BACKGROUND: Although alcohol use disorder (AUD) runs strongly within families, studies examining the impact of rearing environment, unconfounded by genetic effects, are rare and, to date, contradictory. We here seek to conduct such a study using an adoptive co-sib control design. METHODS: Defining high-risk as having ⩾1 biological parent with an externalizing syndrome (AUD, drug abuse or crime), we identified 1316 high-risk full-sibships and 4623 high-risk half-sibships containing at least one member who was home-reared and one who was adopted-away. Adoptive families are carefully screened in

Home and Neighborhood Food Environment Measures and Weight-for-Age z-Scores Among Children Aged 1-5 Years: An Exploratory Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Childhood obesity is prevalent in the United States, and although food environments (FEs) may be related to child weight, findings remain inconsistent. This study evaluated neighborhood and home FEs' associations with children's weight and explored interactive effects of the neighborhood and home FEs on child weight. We hypothesized that children exposed to less healthy neighborhood and home FEs would have higher weight. Methods: This secondary analysis leveraged baseline data from caregiver-child dyads (n = 115) enrolled in an obesity intervention trial (HABITS). The Mo

Home Environment in Early-Life and Lifestyle Factors Associated with Asthma and Allergic Diseases among Inner-City Children from the REPRO_PL Birth Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that, in our REPRO_PL cohort, exposure to indoor allergens and lifestyle factors in early life are associated with risk of asthma, atopic dermatitis, and allergic rhinitis at ten years of age. METHODS: We only examined children who had lived in the same house from birth. Children's exposure to tobacco smoke was assessed based on cotinine levels in urine. House dust samples were collected. RESULTS: Higher Fel d1 concentration in house dust was associated with significantly higher risk of developing asthma at age 10 years (95% CI,10.87 to 20.93; p < 0.001). Frequent

A 2-Group Path Analysis of a Food Environment Conceptual Model by Food Security Status: Home Food Environment Variables Were Associated With Healthy Eating Index 2015 Component Scores for Total Vegetables Among Those With Food Security.

BACKGROUND: The Model of Community Nutrition Environments is a well-known conceptual model in public health nutrition, although few studies have tested the model as a valid representation of food environment-diet pathways. Further, no study has explored whether the model differs by food security status, despite documented disparities in food environments and diet for those experiencing food insecurity. OBJECTIVE: To test the Model of Community Nutrition Environments by food security status using multigroup path analysis. DESIGN: This secondary analysis of baseline data from a hybrid-effectiv

Development of a self-monitoring tool for diabetic foot prevention using smartphone-based thermography: Plantar thermal pattern changes and usability in the home environment.

Thermography is a well-known risk-assessment tool for diabetic foot ulcers but is not widely used in the home setting due to the influence of the complicated home environment on thermographic images. This study investigated changes in thermographic images in complicated home environments to determine the feasibility of smartphone-based thermography in home settings. Healthy volunteers (age > 20 years) were recruited and required to take plantar thermal images using smartphone-based thermography attached to a selfie stick at different times of the day for 4 days. The thermal images and associat

Home Parenting Environment and Executive Function Development in 5- to 6-Year-Old Children: A Three-Wave Longitudinal Study Using Multivariate Latent Growth Modeling.

Executive function is important for children's self-regulation and school readiness, and the home parenting environment is a key proximal context for its development. However, less is known about whether the overall home parenting environment is associated with children's initial executive function and subsequent change. This study examined these associations among 265 children aged 5-6 years in Yancheng, China, using three-wave data collected at six-month intervals. At each wave, mothers rated children's executive function using the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Preschool Ve

Brain Structural Connectivity and Morphological Awareness Mediate the Association Between Home Literacy Environment and Reading Outcomes in Children With Family History of Reading Difficulties.

Previous studies have shown that higher socioeconomic status (SES) and richer home literacy environment (HLE) are associated with better reading outcomes in children with family risk for reading difficulties (RD). Yet, the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying this association remain understudied. This study sought to fill in the gap using both behavioral and neuroimaging methodologies. Eighty-one native Mandarin-speaking children (age = 8.7-12.0 years) and their parents were recruited. Family history (FH) of RD and home environmental factors (SES and HLE) were collected, as well as child

Interventions for improving home food environments and household food security in adult populations residing in low-income settings: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Overweight and obesity are a growing global public health problem. Eating behaviours of adults and children are largely influenced by the home food environment (HFE). The lack of access to nutritious food in homes contributes to unhealthy dietary habits and, consequently, overweight and obesity among adults and children, as well as chronic diseases associated with poor diets. The present systematic review aims to identify existing HFE and household food security interventions and to determine the effects of these interventions in improving the availability of healthy food in the

Associations of prenatal per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances with whole blood folate levels in pregnant women in the Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment (HOME) Study.

BACKGROUND: Folate plays a critical role during pregnancy, preventing neural tube defects and possibly adverse neurodevelopment. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals that may decrease folate levels. Although some studies have found associations between PFAS and folate, we are unaware of studies conducted in pregnant women. To address this knowledge gap, we evaluated associations between PFAS and whole blood folate (WBF) in pregnant women. METHODS: We used data from 288 pregnant women in the Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment (HOME) Study, a pregnancy
