Hospital care for elderly patients with diseases of the circulatory system. A comparison of hospital use in the United States and Canada.

In an effort to determine how lower health care expenditures in Canada as compared with the United States translate into actual hospital services received, we examined discharge rates, lengths of stay, and the case-mix index (calculated from diagnosis-related group weights) for those 65 years of age and older hospitalized with cardiovascular disease in the United States and two Canadian provinces, Manitoba and Ontario, in 1981 and 1985. We expected that the effect of the prospective payment system might be reflected in changes between 1981 and 1985. Discharge rates for medical treatment of car

Salmonellosis Hospitalizations in the United States: Associated Chronic Conditions, Costs, and Hospital Outcomes, 2011, Trends 2000-2011.

Hospitalized salmonellosis patients with concurrent chronic conditions may be at increased risk for adverse outcomes, increasing the costs associated with hospitalization. Identifying important modifiable risk factors for this predominantly foodborne illness may assist hospitals, physicians, and public health authorities to improve management of these patients. The objectives of this study were to (1) quantify the burden of salmonellosis hospitalizations in the United States, (2) describe hospitalization characteristics among salmonellosis patients with concurrent chronic conditions, and (3) e

Association Between Hospital Tier and Cardiogenic Shock Outcomes in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Consensus documents classify cardiogenic shock (CS) centers on the basis of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), mechanical circulatory support (MCS), and cardiothoracic surgery (CTS) capabilities, but outcomes data remain limited. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to assess the association between CS center tiers and outcomes. METHODS: Adults (aged ≥18 years) hospitalized with CS were identified from the Nationwide Readmissions Database (2016-2022). Hospitals were stratified into the following categories: level 3 (non-PCI, non-MCS, non-CTS, intensive care unit only), level 2 (l

Characteristics of pediatric drowning out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the United States.

AIMS: Drowning is a leading cause of pediatric death in the United States, yet data characterizing these arrests is limited. Our study aimed to describe demographic and emergency medical services (EMS) response characteristics for drowning-related pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (pOHCAs). METHODS: Using the 2023 National Emergency Medical Services Information System dataset, we conducted a cross-sectional study of EMS-attended 9-1-1 responses involving children 1 day-17 years old who experienced a drowning-related pOHCA. We used descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regr

Clinical presentation and outcome of cholera in a regional hospital in Khartoum State, Sudan.

Cholera remains a significant global health concern, especially in areas with limited access to safe drinking water, poor sanitation, inadequate hygiene practices, and fragile health infrastructure. The etiology is Vibrio cholerae, a bacterium with multiple serotypes of varying degrees of pathogenicity. It typically presents as acute, severe watery diarrhea leading to dehydration. Cholera is endemic in several African countries, including Sudan. This study aimed to describe the clinical features and outcomes of cholera in patients admitted to a hospital in Khartoum, Sudan. A descriptive cross-

Mycoplasma pneumoniae Infections in Hospitalized Children - United States, 2018-2024.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common bacterial cause of respiratory infection and a leading cause of childhood community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Increases in M. pneumoniae infection occur every 3-5 years. In the United States, M. pneumoniae prevalence decreased during and immediately after the COVID-19 pandemic. Information from 42 U.S. children's hospitals that provided information to the Pediatric Health Information System, a database of clinical and resource use information, was used to identify discharge diagnostic codes for 2018-2024 indicating M. pneumoniae infection. M. pneumoniae-associ

The Mental States of Aggressors: A Biopsychosocial Analysis of Workplace Violence Reports in Hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence (WPV) in hospitals worldwide has been on the rise for the last decade, marked by increased verbal and physical aggression. From a biopsychosocial perspective, we conceptualize aggressors' mental states as their control (or lack of) of an impulse across their life course. To contribute to violence prevention, our study synthesizes theoretical assumptions and organizational analysis. METHODS: An exploratory sequential mixed-methods design analyzed 2634 WPV narratives from two hospitals in a large city in the Northeastern United States of America (2019-2023). Narra

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hospitalizations with hepatocellular carcinoma in the United States.

BACKGROUND: We studied the temporal trends of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)-related hospitalizations and potential predictors of in-hospital mortality around the COVID-19 pandemic. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using the International Classification of Diseases code, we used the National Inpatient Sample 2019-2020 and defined HCC and its underlying etiology. To assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hospitalization and in-hospital mortality, the study period was divided into the pre-COVID-19 era (2019 Q1-2020 Q1) and the COVID-19 era (2020 Q2-2020 Q4). Quarterly trends in etiology-base

Surgeon and Hospital Factors Associated With Outcomes in the New York State Database.

INTRODUCTION: We sought to explore the relationship between various surgeon-related and hospital-level characteristics and clinical outcomes among patients requiring cardiac surgery. METHODS: We searched the New York State Cardiac Data Reporting System for all coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and valve cases between 2015 and 2017. The data were analyzed without dichotomization. RESULTS: Among CABG/valve surgeons, case volume was positively correlated with years in practice (P = 0.002) and negatively correlated with risk-adjusted mortality ratio (P = 0.014). For CABG and CABG/valve surg

A state-level analysis of macro-level factors associated with hospital readmissions.

Investigation of the factors that contribute to hospital readmissions has focused largely on individual level factors. We extend the knowledge base by exploring macrolevel factors that may contribute to readmissions. We point to environmental, behavioral, and socioeconomic factors that are emerging as correlates to readmissions. Data were taken from publicly available reports provided by multiple agencies. Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling was used to test the association between economic stability and environmental factors on opioid use which was in turn tested for a direct a
