Sex differences in onset times of cutaneous thermal sensations across non-noxious to noxious heat intensities.

Sex differences in thermal perception are well documented, but how these differences vary across heat intensities remains unclear. This study investigated sex differences in perception of cutaneous warmth, hot, and pain sensations across contact temperatures ranging from near-threshold to clearly noxious levels. Eight healthy males and eight females were exposed to contact heat stimuli at 42, 46, and 50°C using a Peltier stimulator (6.25 cm2) applied to the left anterior thigh. Onset times for each thermal sensation were recorded, along with heat flux. At rest, skin temperature was significant

The field study about the effects of artificial CO2-rich cool-water immersion after outdoor sports activity in a hot environment.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: In our previous laboratory experiment (room temperature of 25 °C), CO2-rich cool-water immersion (CCWI) suppressed subjects' core body temperature even during repeated exercise. It is unclear whether the suppression of body temperature elevation would also continue after CCWI in a hot outdoor environment. Herein we investigated the thermal effects of CCWI after regular exercise training in heat on subjects' core temperature (Tcore), three skin temperatures (Tskin), heart rate (HR), and the rate of perceived ice (RPI). METHODS: Thirty-six subjects (25 males, 11 females) w

Cold temperatures, stress, and violence.

The relation between temperature and violence was found in many studies. However, the results of such studies demonstrated only that uncomfortably hot temperatures increase violence. There seem to be no data on the effect of cold temperatures. We studied the relation between temperature and violence for the Russian Federation because the Russian Federation is a country with huge climatic differences. Two types of the analysis of the data were applied. In Analysis 1 average yearly temperatures were used. For violent crimes a decrease in temperature resulted in the increase of the crimes after t

The temperature and pH repertoire of the transglutaminase family is expanding.

Transglutaminases (TGs) play important roles in the food industry, pharmacology, and biotechnology, but as protein cross-linkers, their complexes are stable, resistant, immunogenic, and potentially pathogenic. Many TGs have been characterized, but they operate in narrow temperature and pH range limits. In a research article in this issue, Clemens Furnes and colleagues describe a novel cold-adapted TG from Atlantic cod, which expands the operating boundaries to a lower temperature and a wider pH. In this accompanying commentary, we discuss how this TG opens new applications in cold environments

Assessing health risks of extremely hot weather and the need for enhanced heat alerts in a City with a subtropical climate.

The Hong Kong Observatory has operated the Very Hot Weather Warning since 2000 to warn the local population of very hot weather, defined as when the daily maximum temperature (Tmax) reaches 33 °C. Recent years have seen an increasing number of days with Tmax reaching 35 °C, hence necessitating a review and update of the warning system. In this study, the health impacts of heat were assessed to inform and support the update of the Very Hot Weather Warning. A retrospective study of heat-health related mortality and emergency calls of the Hong Kong population in 2012 to 2022 was conducted. Genera

Exercise during hot-water immersion in divers habituated to hot-dry and hot-wet conditions.

PURPOSE: Diving in warm water increases thermal risk during exercise compared to thermoneutral waters. The purpose of this study was to evaluate exercise endurance in warm- and hot-water conditions in divers habituated to wet or dry heat. METHODS: Nineteen male divers completed this study at the Navy Experimental Diving Unit. Subjects were assigned DRY or WET heat habituation groups. The DRY group (n=9) cycled at 125-150W for one hour in a non-immersed condition (34.4˚C, 50%RH), while the WET group (n=10) cycled at 50W for one hour while immersed in 34.4˚C water. Exercise time to exhaustion w

Influence of Fracture Morphology on Gas Desorption Promotion in Coal by Hot Water Injection.

The influence of hydraulic fracture morphology on the flow of two-phase fluids and heat transfer characteristics during hot water injection into coal was studied by using a thermal-fluid-solid coupling model. Quantitative analysis was performed on the coal temperature distribution, fracture gas pressure, gas phase saturation dynamics, and total gas output variation. The results show that (1) with the change of fracture morphologies from single to complex combination, the average temperature of the coal body increases significantly. (2) The complexity of the fracture morphology increases the ga

Environmental high temperature affects pre-implantation embryo development by impairing the DNA repair ability.

Environmental high temperature poses a significant threat to human health, however, limited information is available for understanding the relationship between the hot weather and infertility. This study aims to assess the adverse effect of the hot weather to early embryonic cells. Our results indicated that environmental high temperature exposure could cause the decline of early embryo quality and implantation ability. In detail, it led to early embryonic development retardation, embryo degeneration rate increased, the rate of blastocyst and hatching decreased, and reduced the number of impla

An outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in a Swedish hospital.

We report a nosocomial outbreak of Legionella pneumophila serogroup (sg) 1 infection at the general hospital, Värnamo, Sweden. From December 1990 to February 1991, 28 patients and 3 staff fell ill with pneumonia and 3 died. L. pneumophila sg 1 together with several other Legionellae were isolated from the hot water supply to 17 of 20 hospital wards, probably being spread by aerosolization via shower nozzles. Raising the hospital's hot water temperature from 45 degrees C to 65 degrees C, together with heat disinfection of the shower equipment, arrested the outbreak within a week. Keeping the ho

Postexercise Hot-Water Immersion Does Not Further Enhance Heat Adaptation or Performance in Endurance Athletes Training in a Hot Environment.

PURPOSE: Hot-water immersion (HWI) after training in temperate conditions has been shown to induce thermophysiological adaptations and improve endurance performance in the heat; however, the potential additive effects of HWI and training in hot outdoor conditions remain unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of repeated postexercise HWI in athletes training in a hot environment. METHODS: A total of 13 (9 female) elite/preelite racewalkers completed a 15-day training program in outdoor heat (mean afternoon high temperature = 34.6°C). Athletes were divided into 2 matched g

[Preventive effect of fluid warmer system on hypothermia induced by rapid intravenous infusion].

The changes in body temperature induced by rapid intravenous infusion of lactated Ringer solution and the effect of a fluid warmer system (HOT LINE, Level 1 Technologies, Inc., Rockland, MD) were investigated in 35 patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. The patients were divided into 5 groups by categories of the fluid temperature (-19 or -38 degrees C), infusion route (radial or right subclavian vein), and infusion rate of lactated Ringer solution (1000 or 250 ml for 30 min). Pulmonary arterial, esophageal, bladder, and forehead deep temperatures, which reflect core temperature, were sig

Human tolerance to extreme heat: evidence from a desert climate population.

BACKGROUND: Ambient temperatures exceeding 40 °C are projected to become common in many temperate climatic zones due to global warming. Therefore, understanding the health effects of continuous exposure to high ambient temperatures on populations living in hot climatic regions can help identify the limits of human tolerance. OBJECTIVE: We studied the relationship between ambient temperature and non-accidental mortality in the hot desert city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, between 2006 and 2015. METHODS: We used a distributed lag nonlinear model to estimate the mortality-temperature association over

Analysis of human thermoregulatory mechanisms using 2-D computational model.

A numerical investigation is reported comparing various human thermoregulation mechanisms under hot and cold stress. The passive system of the developed model consists of 12 spherical/cylindrical segments and is modeled using the Pennes bioheat equation and finite difference method. The active system accounts for all regulatory responses, including the counter current heat exchange between veins and arteries; the respiratory heat loss; and threshold, gain, and maximum intensity of response mechanisms. The developed code analyzes various thermoregulatory defense mechanisms under hot and cold en

Combination of Heat Shock and Enhanced Thermal Regime to Control the Growth of a Persistent Legionella pneumophila Strain.

Following nosocomial cases of Legionella pneumophila, the investigation of a hot water system revealed that 81.5% of sampled taps were positive for L. pneumophila, despite the presence of protective levels of copper in the water. A significant reduction of L. pneumophila counts was observed by culture after heat shock disinfection. The following corrective measures were implemented to control L. pneumophila: increasing the hot water temperature (55 to 60 °C), flushing taps weekly with hot water, removing excess lengths of piping and maintaining a water temperature of 55 °C throughout the syste

Legionellaceae in the hospital water-supply. Epidemiological link with disease and evaluation of a method for control of nosocomial legionnaires' disease and Pittsburgh pneumonia.

An epidemiological link was found between contamination of a hospital water-supply by Legionella pneumophila and by Pittsburgh pneumonia agent (PPA) and subsequent cases of nosocomial legionnaires' disease and Pittsburgh pneumonia. The extent of L pneumophila isolation from the water-supply paralleled the occurrence of disease. Whenever L pneumophila was isolated from more than 30% of ten selected water sites, nosocomial legionellosis occurred. The temperature of the hot water tanks was raised to 60-77 degrees C for 72 h, and water outlets were flushed for 30 min with hot water. A decline in n

Accurate Flow Characterization of A6082 for Precision Simulation of a Hot Metal Forming Process.

The flow behaviors of metallic materials are sensitive to state variables, including strain, strain rate, and temperature. In particular, the temperature effect on the flow behavior is of great importance. The flow information is usually obtained at the sample strain rates and temperatures from the hot cylinder compression test. However, this test is inevitably exposed to undesirable effects of friction and temperature on flow characterization. This study reveals their impact on the flow curve of an A6082 alloy. The unique features of its flow behavior and the inaccuracy of as-received, primit

Body temperature stability in the whale shark, the world's largest fish.

It is generally assumed that the body temperature of large animals is less likely to change because of their large body size, resulting in a high thermal inertia and a smaller surface area to volume ratio. The goal of this study was to investigate the stability of body temperature in large fish using data from field experiments. We measured the muscle temperatures of free-ranging whale sharks (Rhincodon typus), the largest extant fish globally, and investigated their ectothermic physiology and the stability of their body temperature. The muscle temperature changed substantially more slowly tha

Dosing Heat: Expected Core Temperature Change with Warmed or Cooled Intravenous Fluids.

Emergent modification of a patient's body temperature is crucial in certain disease or injury states. Advanced targeted temperature management techniques such as central venous catheter devices are not universally available, however, virtually all medical centers have access to intravenous fluids. This study approximates the change in body temperature for a given volume of room temperature, chilled, or heated isotonic crystalloid bolus. Using thermodynamic principles, a mathematical model was created to approximate change in body core temperature in response to a given volume and temperature o
