CONTEXT: Poor physical and mental health and substance use disorder can be causes and consequences of homelessness. Approximately 2.1 million persons per year in the United States experience homelessness. People experiencing homelessness have high rates of emergency department use, hospitalization, substance use treatment, social services use, arrest, and incarceration.
OBJECTIVES: A standard approach to treating homeless persons with a disability is called Treatment First, requiring clients be "housing ready"-that is, in psychiatric treatment and substance-free-before and while receiving per

BACKGROUND: Housing First is an effective intervention to stably house and alter service use patterns in a large proportion of homeless people with mental illness. However, it is unknown whether there are differences in the patterns of service use over time among those who do or do not become stably housed and what effect, if any, Housing First has on these differing service use patterns. This study explored changes in the service use of people with mental illness who received Housing First compared to standard care, and how patterns of use differed among people who did and did not become stab

Permanent supportive housing (PSH) is an evidence-based health intervention for persons experiencing homelessness, but the impact of individual mechanisms within this intervention on health requires further research. This study examines the longitudinal impact of the mechanism of supportive housing within a peer-delivered PSH model on overall health and mental health (as measured by psychological distress and self-report of bothersome symptoms) outcomes in an ethnically diverse population. The 237 participants in the study included persons who were homeless or at risk of homelessness and who a

The current study examined risk and resilience factors at multiple levels that affect homeless individuals' ability to exit homelessness and achieve housing stability. It also examined the relationship between housing status, housing quality and mental health functioning. The methodology is a longitudinal study of single homeless individuals staying in emergency shelters in a medium-sized Canadian city who were followed for a 2 year period. Data were collected from participants at a baseline interview when they were homeless and at a 2-year follow-up. There were 329 participants interviewed at

The HIV/AIDS Services Administration (HASA) provides housing, benefits, and case management for low-income people with HIV (PWH) in New York City (NYC). HASA implemented three differentiated service delivery (DSD) pilots: Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH), Transitional Supportive Housing (TSH), and Emergency Single Room Occupancy (ESRO), testing tiered case management by housing type. The PSH pilot aimed to maintain viral suppression outcomes with higher caseloads (50:1), while the TSH and ESRO pilots aimed to improve outcomes with lower caseloads (25:1). We merged programmatic data with the

INTRODUCTION: Social housing plays a critical role in addressing housing inequality and promoting well-being. This paper examines the creation of a registry of social housing sites across all six Ontario Health (OH) regions.
METHODS: For all 47 housing service providers in Ontario, social housing address, provider type, and building type were extracted from their website or from documents provided by the housing organization. The Registry included rent-geared-to-income housing with unique or minimally shared postal codes. Descriptive statistics were analyzed for the housing site characteristi

Permanent supportive housing (PSH) is a community-based housing model for people experiencing homelessness that provides stable housing with a range of voluntary supportive services, such as case management, healthcare, mental health, and substance use treatment services. Understanding (1) the impact of PSH on health outcomes and (2) factors that predict retention in PSH are essential for implementing support systems to address the needs of PSH residents. To address this need, 259 residents living in Santa Clara County, California were followed for two years to evaluate: (1) predictors of rete

OBJECTIVE: There is scant research on the effectiveness of permanent supportive housing for homeless women with mental illness. This study examines the effectiveness of Housing First with an unprecedentedly large sample of homeless women from five Canadian cities, and explore baseline risk factors that predict social, health and well-being outcomes over a 24 month-period.
METHODS: The At Home/Chez Soi multi-site randomized controlled Housing First trial recruited over 600 women between October 2009 and July 2011. This is a post-hoc subgroup exploratory analysis of self-identified women with a

Objectives. To determine the impact of improvements in housing and HIV clinical parameters on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in persons with HIV infection experiencing homelessness.Methods. This prospective cohort study took place in 9 US sites. Local efforts sought to improve HIV and housing status. Longitudinal data analyses determined the impact of changes in housing status, HIV suppression, and CD4 cell counts on HRQOL at 12 months, measured as mental and physical component summary scores.Results. Among 909 participants enrolled from 2013 to 2016, 75.1% were homeless, 51.6% did not

Appropriate housing and husbandry practices for laboratory Xenopus are key to maintaining good welfare standards and generating reliable experimental results. Although we lack empirical evidence for many housing and husbandry practices, Xenopus have been used as a laboratory species for decades. As a result, best practices have evolved over time as researchers and staff at frog facilities have built up experience on what helps to keep frogs in the best condition. Different Xenopus species have different care needs; this chapter covers housing and husbandry protocols for Xenopus laevis and Xeno

IMPORTANCE: Harm reduction vending machines (HRVMs) are an evidence-based strategy to provide low-barrier access to harm reduction and health supplies; however, little is known about their perceived impacts in permanent supportive housing for US veterans.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate veteran and staff perspectives on the perceived impacts and concerns associated with HRVMs deployed in permanent supportive housing buildings.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This qualitative study consisted of semistructured interviews with veteran residents who had formerly experienced homelessness and on-site st

Mapping directed spillover pathways in urban housing prices is essential for monitoring the contagion of housing prices across cities. However, existing studies typically rely on either spatial gravity models or time-series models in isolation to analyze intercity connections, thus failing to simultaneously capture the spatiotemporal integration characteristics of housing price contagion. To address this, we embed a finite-length sequence correlation analysis (Correlation-Dependent Balanced Estimation of Diffusion Transfer Entropy, CBEDTE) into the gravity model, yielding the CBEDTE-GM integra

BACKGROUND: The City of Boston has faced unprecedented challenges with substance use amidst changes to the illicit drug supply and increased visibility of homelessness. Among its responses, Boston developed six low threshold harm reduction housing (HRH) sites geared towards supporting the housing needs of people who use drugs (PWUD) and addressing health and safety concerns around geographically concentrated tent encampments. HRH sites are transitional supportive housing that adhere to a "housing first" approach where abstinence is not required and harm reduction services and supports are co-l

Millions of families with children in the U.S. struggle to afford adequate housing. Housing cost burden places families at risk for homelessness, and prevention efforts are hindered by limited understanding of insecure housing experiences at the margins. The present study investigated variation in housing insecurity experiences in a sample of mothers, as well as which risk profiles were most strongly associated with subsequent homelessness. Latent class analysis identified four distinct subgroups of housing insecurity: "Stable," "Unstable," "Rent-Focused," and "Strategic Bill-Paying." Classes

BACKGROUND: Housing insecurity increases risk for child maltreatment, although links from specific domains of housing hardship to specific maltreatment types are not well understood.
OBJECTIVE: The present study tested relationships between three domains of housing - quality, stability, and affordability - with three types of child maltreatment - psychological abuse, physical abuse, and neglect - in a sample of mothers with children age 5-9.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data came from a large, longitudinal survey that recruited mothers in hospitals shortly after giving birth in 20 large America

BACKGROUND: Housing First (HF) is an evidence-based service model that combines permanent housing and supportive case management premised on harm reduction and consumer self-determination to end homelessness for high-need individuals. Originally developed for use with single adults, this model is now being employed with families. Yet there is little empirical work on how HF is implemented with this particular population.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine how frontline providers adapt and apply HF to formerly homeless or at-risk, families involved in child welfare.
