Social justice considerations for occupational therapy: The role of addressing social determinants of health in unstably housed populations.

BACKGROUND: Populations of those experiencing homelessness in the United States expand beyond those living in shelters and on the streets. Many individuals living in poverty experience housing instability, as well as refugee populations who experience deprivation of social resources due to displacement. These populations are significantly affected by social determinants of health (SDOH). OBJECTIVE: A current policy and literature review was completed to assess prominent SDOH impacting unstably housed populations in the United States, including refugees, encountered in occupational therapy pra

Health-Related Social Needs Are Associated with Lower Self-Reported Quality of Life in Patients on Hemodialysis.

KEY POINTS: Health-related social needs are common in patients on in-center hemodialysis. All quality of life subscores are significantly lower in patients with at least one unmet health-related social needs. BACKGROUND: People on hemodialysis often report lower quality of life (QoL) compared with people not on hemodialysis. People with kidney disease have a high prevalence of health-related social needs (HRSN). The association of HRSN and QoL in people on hemodialysis remains understudied. Although some groups of patients treated with hemodialysis tend to have lower QoL, there exists minimal

"You're so powerless": Takatāpui/LGBTIQ+ people's experiences before becoming homeless in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Little is known in Aotearoa New Zealand about experiences of homelessness amongst Takatāpui/LGBTIQ+ identifying people, despite growing international literature regarding LGBTIQ+ homelessness. Using data from semi-structured interviews with eight people who identified as Takatāpui/LGBTIQ+ and had experienced homelessness, this paper explores their experiences prior to becoming homeless. These experiences are placed into the categories of: the pervasiveness of instability (especially in regards to family relationships, finances, and housing), having to grow up fast due to social and material co

Intimate partner violence and psychological well-being: Do housing conditions moderate the effects?

Prior studies link intimate partner violence (IPV) to poor mental health, especially among those with low socioeconomic status or limited support. However, few have explored how housing conditions may moderate these psychological effects. This study investigates the relationship between IPV and psychological well-being, with a particular focus on two outcomes: depressive symptoms and life satisfaction. It also examines whether housing conditions amplify or mitigate individuals' psychological responses to IPV. Data were drawn from the 2008 to 2022 Korea Welfare Panel Study (n = 14,350 married i

Housing Insecurity and Asthma Outcomes.

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease with widespread prevalence that affects children, adolescents, and adults. Asthma morbidity and mortality can be exacerbated in the setting of housing insecurity. In this Grand Rounds Review article, we present a case and discuss the implications that housing insecurity has on asthma outcomes in the United States. We then highlight ways in which providers can advocate for patients with asthma and housing insecurity.

Primary Care-Based Housing Program Reduced Outpatient Visits; Patients Reported Mental And Physical Health Benefits.

Screening for housing instability has increased as health systems move toward value-based care, but evidence on how health care-based housing interventions affect patient outcomes comes mostly from interventions that address homelessness. In this mixed-methods evaluation of a primary care-based housing program in Boston, Massachusetts, for 1,139 patients with housing-related needs that extend beyond homelessness, we found associations between program participation and health care use. Patients enrolled in the program between October 2018 and March 2021 had 2.5 fewer primary care visits and 3.6

THE EFFECT OF HOUSING CIRCUMSTANCES ON RECIDIVISM: Evidence From a Sample of People on Probation in San Francisco.

The relationships between housing circumstances and recidivism are well established among people released from prison. Despite probation being far more common than prison or parole, we know little about living situations, homelessness, and residential instability among people on probation, and we know even less regarding how these housing circumstances may affect their risk of recidivism. Using a unique dataset of 2,453 people on probation and longitudinal analyses, this study finds that housing insecurity is common and is associated with an increased risk of recidivism among people on probati

Prevalence and social-structural correlates of forced moves among women living with HIV in Metro Vancouver, Canada.

Housing instability is a social determinant of health, with eviction being an extreme form of housing instability. There is little research on eviction among women living with HIV despite evidence that housing stability is critical for supporting the wellbeing of people living with HIV, and women in particular face gendered risks to housing stability. This study examined the associations between social-structural factors and forced moves among women living with HIV with data drawn from the Sexual Health & HIV/AIDS Longitudinal Women's Needs Assessment, a community-based cohort study of women l

Meeting the Health and Social Needs of America's Unhoused and Housing-Unstable Populations: A Position Paper From the American College of Physicians.

Access to safe and stable housing has both a direct and indirect effect on health. Experiencing homelessness and housing instability can induce stress and trauma, worsening behavioral health and substance use. The absence of safe and stable living conditions can make it challenging to rest, recuperate, and recover from health ailments and can pose barriers to treatment adherence. Homelessness and housing instability is associated with high rates of numerous diseases and chronic conditions. Its cyclical relationship with other social drivers of health can exacerbate health disparities. As a res

Longitudinal study of the housing and mental health outcomes of tenants appearing in eviction court.

PURPOSE: Millions of people are evicted from rental properties in the U.S. annually, but little is known about them and their mental health. This study followed a cohort of eviction court participants over time and assessed their housing and mental health outcomes. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-one tenants were recruited from an eviction court in New Haven, Connecticut, and their housing, mental health, and psychosocial status were assessed at baseline, 1, 3, 6, and 9 months following their encounter with the court. Inverse probability weighting was used for missing data. RESULTS: At basel

I'm just trying to stay: Experiences of temporal uncertainty in modular and supportive housing among young people who use drugs in Vancouver.

Over the past decades the city of Vancouver has attempted to address a lack of affordable housing for it most marginalized citizens, including young people who use drugs (YPWUD), by expanding access to temporary modular and supportive housing. These projects are guided by a Housing First philosophy that recognizes housing as a key social determinant of health. In this commentary, we draw attention to how, rather than providing a clear pathway to greater stability, modular and supportive housing have become part of broader "institutional circuits" that reinforce residential transience and what

Housing-related stress and substance use in the United States: a cross-sectional analysis of All of Us Research Program data.

Housing-related stress, defined as concerns about not having a place to live, represents a significant correlate of substance use that warrants further investigation. In this cross-sectional analysis of 4358 adults from the national All of Us Research Program we examined associations between housing-related stress and substance use, accounting for demographic factors and mental health status in the United States. We determined that housing-related stress was significantly associated with increased odds of substance use (OR = 1.49, 95% CI 1.31-1.70). Males, racial and ethnic minorities, and ind

How is housing insecurity measured among older adults? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Housing insecurity is an established social determinant of health, with older adults being disproportionately vulnerable. Despite growing research attention, no studies have reviewed the measurement tools existing specifically for this population. This systematic review synthesizes quantitative measures of housing insecurity used among older adults, examines their dimensional structures, and evaluates their psychometric properties. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a systematic search was conducted across 5 electronic databases with no d

Timing of housing crises: Impacts on maternal depression.

Housing problems threaten maternal mental health, but the nature of the relationship between housing and depression across time is not fully understood. Drawing upon the literatures of household shocks and depressive illness, the present study leveraged longitudinal data from the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study to probe the relationship between a housingrelated crisis and depression among at-risk mothers (N = 2,503). Binary logistic regression tested whether a housing crisis predicted an episode of depression across up to one-, three-, and seven-year time lags. The sample was then

Intimate Partner Violence Survivors' Housing Needs and Preferences: A Brief Report.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization contributes to homelessness and housing insecurity for survivors and their children. Despite growing interest in expanding strategies for addressing the housing needs of survivors, there is a dearth of knowledge regarding survivors' preferences and recommendations. To begin to address knowledge gaps, this article reports findings from a qualitative study examining the housing needs of IPV survivors and survivors' preferences and recommendations for addressing their housing needs. In-depth interviews with 19 adult IPV survivors in a southeastern com

PRELIMINARY IMPACT OF SUPPORTIVE HOUSING ON HOSPITAL UTILIZATION FOR INDIVIDUALS EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS.

Housing instability has been shown to negatively impact physical and mental health, with a corresponding increase in health care utilization. In 2019, through a Maryland Medicaid 1115 Health Choice Waiver, 10 Baltimore city hospitals joined with the city of Baltimore and the local nonprofit Health Care for the Homeless to support an innovative program that provides permanent housing and wraparound services to individuals at risk of homelessness. Here, we describe the inception of the program and its subsequent expansion with the investment of the city hospitals. Participants in the program exp

Association of Housing Stress With Child Maltreatment: A Systematic Review.

Child maltreatment is a significant public health issue in the United States. Understanding key risk factors for child maltreatment is critical to informing effective prevention. Poverty is an established risk factor for child maltreatment. However, recent research indicates that material hardship (i.e., difficulties meeting basic needs) may serve as a more direct measure of the way in which poverty affects daily life. One form of material hardship that is common among families is housing stress. Previous reviews have summarized the existing literature regarding the association of economic ins
