Housing Cost Burden and Outcomes Among Medicaid Beneficiaries With Heart Failure.

IMPORTANCE: Housing cost burden is at an all-time high in the US and may disproportionately affect health outcomes among low-income populations. Medicaid-insured individuals and those diagnosed with cardiovascular (CV) disease, such as heart failure (HF), may be especially at increased risk of adverse health outcomes associated with housing cost burden. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between area-level housing cost burden and the probability of CV-related hospitalization or emergency department (ED) visits among Medicaid beneficiaries aged 19 to 64 years with HF. DESIGN, SETTING, AND P

Infectious disease outcomes associated with inadequate housing and access to healthy living practices in Australia: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Inadequate housing and living conditions underpin significant health and wellbeing inequality in Australia, particularly for Indigenous people. This review aimed to define infectious disease (ID) outcomes used to measure the health impact of inadequate housing in Australia within a research context. DESIGN: A systematic review of published studies following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. DATA SOURCES: Four online databases were searched in May 2024 with no date restrictions using terms relating to housing, ID and Austra

When home is a dangerous place: the cost of falls among older people living in the community.

Falls among older people are common, and they may have consequences such as fractures and injuries. Falls may also reduce older people's independence and wellbeing and increase demand for both healthcare and social care services. This research aims to investigate whether older people living in the community who experience poor housing conditions face a greater risk of falls than those living in better-quality housing after controlling for other risk factors. In particular, we aimed to (i) identify housing-related drivers of falls, and (ii) estimate associated costs. Using data from the English

The impact of health shocks on housing instability: Evidence from urban Medicaid enrollees.

Poor health and unstable housing are closely linked. Most research has focused on how housing shapes health, with little empirical study of whether and how health events can lead to future residential mobility or housing instability. This paper uses high-frequency administrative data on residential location and health among Medicaid enrollees in New York City to test whether adverse health events trigger housing mobility or insecurity, independent of the financial toll of medical bills. Using an event study design, I find that health shocks - or, sudden hospitalizations after two hospital-free

Victimisation of individuals with serious mental illness living in sheltered housing: differential impact of risk factors related to clinical and demographic characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Sheltered housing is associated with quality-of-life improvements for individuals with serious mental illness (SMI). However, there are equivocal findings around safety outcomes related to this type of living condition. AIMS: We aimed to investigate raw differences in prevalence and incidence of crime victimisation in sheltered housing compared with living alone or with family; and to identify groups at high risk for victimisation, using demographic and clinical factors. We do so by reporting estimated victimisation incidents for each risk group. METHOD: A large, community-based,

Assessing the Impact of Social Needs and Social Determinants of Health on Health Care Utilization: Using Patient- and Community-Level Data.

As the US health care system moves to expand access to and quality of medical care, the importance of addressing patient-level social needs and community-level social determinants of health (SDOH) is increasingly being recognized. This study evaluates individual- and community-level needs of housing (one of the SDOH domains) across the patient population of an academic medical center and explores how the level of housing needs impacts health care utilization. The authors performed a descriptive analysis of housing issues identified in both structured and unstructured (eg, clinical notes) data

Examining mediators of housing mobility on adolescent asthma: results from a housing voucher experiment.

Literature on neighborhood effects on health largely employs non-experimental study designs and does not typically test specific neighborhood mediators that influence health. We address these gaps using the Moving to Opportunity (MTO) housing voucher experiment. Research has documented both beneficial and adverse effects on health in MTO, but mediating mechanisms have not been tested explicitly. We tested mediation of MTO effects on youth asthma (n = 2829). MTO randomized families living in public housing to an experimental group receiving a voucher to subsidize rental housing, or a control gr

Outcomes of homeless adults with mental illness in a housing program and in case management only.

OBJECTIVE: The effectiveness of two types of service programs in ameliorating homelessness among individuals with severe mental illness was compared. METHODS: Homeless persons with severe mental illness were recruited into the study on their entry into one of two types of homeless service programs. The first was a comprehensive housing program, in which consumers received guaranteed access to housing, housing support services, and case management. The second was a program of case management only, in which consumers received specialized case management services. In a quasi-experimental or nonr

Effect of housing system on reproductive behaviour and on some endocrinological and seminal parameters of donkey stallions.

Reproductive management of male donkeys employed for artificial breeding has been poorly studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of housing system, with the animals grouped together in a paddock or kept in individual boxes, on sexual behaviour, cortisol and testosterone concentration and seminal characteristics of adult male donkeys. The study included four Amiata donkey jacks (stallions) from which ejaculates, saliva and blood were collected during two distinct 3 weeks periods, one in the group and one in the box housing system. Time needed for semen collection was shorter w

Early implementation evaluation of a multi-site housing first intervention for homeless people with mental illness: a mixed methods approach.

This research sought to determine whether the implementation of Housing First in a large-scale, multi-site Canadian project for homeless participants with mental illness shows high fidelity to the Pathways Housing First model, and what factors help or hinder implementation. Fidelity ratings for 10 Housing First programs in five cities were made by an external quality assurance team along five key dimensions of Housing First based on 84 key informant interviews, 10 consumer focus groups, and 100 chart reviews. An additional 72 key informant interviews and 35 focus groups yielded qualitative dat

Comparison of outcomes of homeless female and male veterans in transitional housing.

Homelessness among female veterans is of national concern, but there have been few studies of how they differ from male veterans or whether they have different outcomes. This study compared 59 female and 1,181 male participants in a multi-site study of three VA-funded transitional housing programs over a 1-year period following completion of an episode of treatment. At baseline, female participants were younger, reported more psychiatric symptoms, had shorter histories of homelessness, were less likely to have substance use disorders, and were less likely to be working than males. After control

Health, social, and civic society professionals' and volunteers' view on the health among young people in unstable housing situations in the south of Sweden: a qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: Stable housing is important for overall health and well-being among young people, and poor-quality housing can trigger multiple diseases, including infections, injuries, chronic diseases, and psychological problems. However, many young people in Sweden struggle with an unstable housing situation. It is therefore important to illuminate how health, social, and civic society professionals and volunteers see the overall health situation for young people (16-27 years) in unstable housing situations. METHOD: Sixteen health, social, and civic society professionals and volunteers, from b

Invited Commentary: Data Sources for Estimating Numbers of People Experiencing Homelessness in the United States-Strengths and Limitations.

In the accompanying article, Mosites et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2021;190(11):2432-2436) evaluate data sources that enumerate people experiencing homelessness in the United States with respect to their strengths and limitations for conducting epidemiologic research in homeless populations. We largely agree with their key arguments, yet offer additional points that provide important context about these data for researchers and other stakeholders. Overall, we believe that it is possible to address many of the noted shortcomings of these data, and once addressed, the data could be more effectively le

Policy interventions to improve health through housing: A scoping review.

Despite decades of research documenting the effects of poor housing on health, there is much less evidence of the effectiveness of different housing interventions to improve health outcomes. Moreover, existing research tends to focus on a specific population group or aspect of housing. This scoping review aimed to identify the range of policy instruments and interventions that could improve health by improving housing quality, stability, affordability and availability, with a focus on interventions being implemented in practice, including those not published in the academic literature. Socio-economic indicators, housing characteristics, site of residence, and substance use as household-level risk factors in GRT-INSPIRED communities.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use remains a major public health concern in South Africa and disproportionately affects urban communities experiencing socio-economic disadvantage, poor housing conditions, and spatial inequality. While existing research has largely focused on individual-level substance use, less is known about how household socio-economic characteristics, housing conditions, and place of residence shape household-level substance use in urban settings. This study examined the associations between socio-economic indicators, housing characteristics, site of residence, and household subst

Research in supported housing.

BACKGROUND: De-institutionalization has led to the provision of various forms of housing with or without support for people with mental illness in the community. In this paper, we review the conceptual issues related to the provision of supported housing schemes, the characteristics of residents, research methods and outcomes, and the factors influencing the quality of care provided. METHODS: A Medline and hand search of published literature was complemented by information derived from contacting expert researchers in the field. FINDINGS: There is considerable diversity of models of supporte
