Viruses Associated with Acute Conjunctivitis in Vanuatu.

The first manifestation of a viral infection may be conjunctivitis. There are limited data on the etiology of viral conjunctivitis in Vanuatu, a country in the South Pacific Ocean. Patients presenting to one of two Vanuatu health centers with presumed infectious conjunctivitis were eligible if symptom onset was within 14 days of screening. Conjunctival and anterior nasal swabs were obtained and subjected to unbiased RNA deep sequencing (RNA-seq) to identify DNA and RNA viruses. For samples collected from May to November 2021, RNA-seq identified a viral etiology in 12/48 patients. Human adenovi

Virologic study of acute lower respiratory tract infections in children admitted to the paediatric department of Blida University Hospital, Algeria.

Acute lower respiratory tract infections (ALRTI) such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis are major causes of mortality and morbidity in children under 5 years of age. The main microbial agents responsible for ALRTI are either bacterial agents (Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae type b, Mycoplasma pneumoniae) or viruses (respiratory syncytial virus (RSV, also known as human orthopneumovirus), Myxovirus influenzae, Myxovirus parainfluenzae, adenovirus) [1]. More recently, other viruses (rhinovirus, metapneumovirus, coronavirus, bocavirus) have been implicated in ALRTI; their identifica

Changes in virus detection in hospitalized children before and after the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pandemic.

The impact of strengthening preventive measures against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection on the prevalence of respiratory viruses in children was examined. After the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the rate of multiple virus detection among hospitalized children decreased. Immediately after the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, respiratory syncytial and parainfluenza viruses were rarely detected and subsequently reemerged. Human metapneumovirus and influenza virus were not consistently detected. Non-enveloped viruses (bocavirus, rhinovirus, and adenovirus) were detected to some e

[Diagnosis and molecular epidemiology of viral gastroenteritis in the past, present and future].

Outline, history of research, diagnosis and molecular epidemiology of viral gastroenteritis were described. Rotavirus, adenovirus, norovirus, sapovirus, astrovirus, human parechovirus, Aichivirus, and human bocavirus are the major target viruses which cause acute gastroenteritis. The viruses were differentiated into genogroup, genotypes and subgenotypes/clusters/lineages. The changing of their genetic backgrounds was well recognized in different areas and years. Some reassortments or recombinations were observed not only between humans and humans but also between humans and animals. Viral gast

Clinical and Virological Characteristics of Early and Moderate Preterm Infants Readmitted With Viral Respiratory Infections.

BACKGROUND: Rehospitalization of children born prematurely (referred to as preterm children) caused by severe respiratory infections is common. Most studies have focused on respiratory syncytial virus infection. We designed a study to determine the virological and clinical characteristics of severe respiratory infections of children born early (<32 weeks) and moderate preterm (32 to 36 weeks), and compared them with full term (FT; ≥37 weeks) children who were subsequently admitted with respiratory illness. METHODS: A 7-year observational prospective study was conducted on preterm and FT child

Viral infections of the lower respiratory tract: old viruses, new viruses, and the role of diagnosis.

Viral infections of the lower respiratory tract cause an enormous disease burden in children, and the role of respiratory viruses in serious lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in older adults is increasingly appreciated. Although viruses are responsible for a large proportion LRTIs, antibiotics are often prescribed. New diagnostic platforms have the potential to detect a wider range of established and newly discovered viruses with greater sensitivity. This will create additional challenges. Although it is clear that influenza, parainfluenza, respiratory syncytial virus, human metapneum

Interplay between autophagy and apoptosis in human viral pathogenesis.

Autophagy and apoptosis are two pivotal programmed cell death pathways that regulate vital physiological processes, ranging from cellular development to intracellular homeostasis. These pathways also act as key battlegrounds in host-pathogen interactions during viral infection. This comprehensive review explores the dual regulatory mechanisms controlling autophagy and apoptosis triggered by clinically significant human viruses. These include DNA viruses-such as herpes simplex virus (HSV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), hepatitis viruses, human papillomavirus (HPV), and human bocavirus (HBoV)-and RN

Respiratory DNA viruses are undetectable in nasopharyngeal secretions from adenotonsillectomized children.

Respiratory viruses are frequently detected in association with chronic tonsillar hypertrophy in the absence of symptoms of acute respiratory infection (ARI). The present analysis was done in follow-up to a previous clinical study done by this same group. Nasopharyngeal washes (NPWs) were obtained from 83 of 120 individuals at variable times post adenotonsillectomy, in the absence of ARI symptoms. A look back at virus detection results in NPWs from the same 83 individuals at the time of tonsillectomy revealed that 73.5% (61/83) were positive for one or more viruses. The overall frequency of re

Simultaneous detection of seven enteric viruses associated with acute gastroenteritis by a multiplexed Luminex-based assay.

Rapid and broad diagnostic methods are needed for the identification of viral agents of gastroenteritis. In this study, we used Luminex xMAP technology to develop a multiplexed assay for the simultaneous identification of major enteric viral pathogens, including rotavirus A (RVA), noroviruses (NoVs) (including genogroups GI and GII), sapoviruses (SaV), human astrovirus (HAstV), enteric adenoviruses (EAds), and human bocavirus 2 (HBoV2). The analytical sensitivity allowed detection of 10(3) (EAds, HBoV2, and RVA) and 10(4) (NoV GI and GII, SaV, and HAstV) copies per reaction mixture. Compared t

Life-Threatening Conditions in Children with Bocavirus Infection-Case Series and Mini Review of the Literature.

In this study, we present four cases of Human Bocavirus (HBoV) infection in children aged between 1 month and 4 years. Among these cases, two siblings were hospitalized with similar symptoms. Among the four pediatric cases of patients with HBoV infection, three were associated with acute respiratory failure and spontaneous pneumothorax, and two of these presented with subcutaneous emphysema. The presented patients were young children, aged between 1 month and 4 years, two of whom were siblings, suggesting a possible intrafamilial transmission of HBoV1 infection. These cases highlight the impor

The impact of viral infections in children with community-acquired pneumonia.

For many years viral causes of community-acquired pneumonia were often been given limited attention. The number of published studies on influenza alone increased fivefold from 2001 to 2010. Specifically several studies have underlined that the involvement of viruses in community-acquired pneumonia has been underestimated, and this underestimation has been attributed to a lack of appropriate diagnostic methods. Now, with the advent of modern molecular assays, it is well recognized that viruses account for the largest proportion of community-acquired pneumonia in preschool children in both devel
