Elevating Equity and Inclusion for People With Intellectual Disabilities: A Nursing Student Sexual Health Promotion Project.

Organic solvents can cause hearing loss themselves or promote noise-induced hearing loss. The objective of this study was to review the literature on the effects of low-level exposure to trichloroethylene on the auditory system and consider its relevance for the occupational settings. Both human and animal investigations were evaluated only for realistic exposure concentrations based on the Quebec permissible exposure limits: 50 ppm 8-h time-weighed average exposure value (TWAEV) and 200 ppm short-term exposure value (STEV). In humans, the upper limit for considering ototoxicity data relevant

A Three-Dimensional Lung Cell Model to Leptospira Virulence Investigations.

Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonosis and a serious public health threat in tropical and subtropical areas. The etiologic agents of leptospirosis are pathogenic spirochetes from the genus Leptospira. In severe cases, patients develop a pulmonary hemorrhage that is associated with high fatality rates. Several animal models were established for leptospirosis studies, such as rodents, dogs, and monkeys. Although useful to study the relationship among Leptospira and its hosts, the animal models still exhibit economic and ethical limitation reasons and do not fully represent the human infection. As

Advancing the management and control of typhoid fever: a review of the historical role of human challenge studies.

Typhoid infection causes considerable morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in settings where lack of clean water and inadequate sanitation facilitate disease spread through faecal-oral transmission. Improved understanding of the pathogenesis, immune control and microbiology of Salmonella Typhi infection can help accelerate the development of improved vaccines and diagnostic tests necessary for disease control. S. Typhi is a human-restricted pathogen; therefore animal models are limited in their relevance to human infection. During the latter half of the 20th century, induced human i

The origin of human pathogens: evaluating the role of agriculture and domestic animals in the evolution of human disease.

Many significant diseases of human civilization are thought to have arisen concurrently with the advent of agriculture in human society. It has been hypothesised that the food produced by farming increased population sizes to allow the maintenance of virulent pathogens, i.e. civilization pathogens, while domestic animals provided sources of disease to humans. To determine the relationship between pathogens in humans and domestic animals, I examined phylogenetic data for several human pathogens that are commonly evolutionarily linked to domestic animals: measles, pertussis, smallpox, tuberculos

Viral studies in rheumatic disease.

Rheumatic disease has long been thought to represent an interaction between environmental agents on a background of genetic susceptibility. In this review herpesviruses and retroviruses are considered as possible aetiological agents in autoimmune disease with a particular emphasis on Sjögren's syndrome. A possible role for cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) and human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) is reviewed. We conclude that there is no compelling evidence for the involvement of any of these herpesviruses. Retroviruses, however, are attracting increasing interest.

Agmatine relieves behavioral impairments in Fragile X mice model.

BACKGROUND: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most common heritable form of neurodevelopmental disorder, which is caused by the loss of fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) expression. Despite the unceasing efforts to develop therapeutic agents against FXS based on the pathophysiological changes observed in animal models of FXS and human patients, therapeutic candidates including mGluR signaling modulators have failed to provide sufficient effects. Based on the recent successful demonstration of an endogenous polyamine, agmatine, to improve the autism-like symptoms in the valproic acid an

Targeting tumour surface collage with hydrogel probe: a new strategy to enhance intraoperative imaging sensitivity and stability of bladder cancer.

PURPOSE: The incomplete resection of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) augments the risk of disease recurrence. Imaging-guided surgery by molecular probes represents a pivotal strategy for mitigating postoperative recurrence. Traditional optical molecular probes, primarily composed of antibodies/peptides targeting tumour cells and fluorescent groups, are challenged by the high heterogeneity of NMIBC cells, leading to inadequate probe sensitivity. We have developed a collagen-adhesive probe (CA-P) to target the collagen within the tumour microenvironment, aiming to address the issue of

Abandonment of dogs in Latin America: Strategies and ideas.

In this article, we gathered information from postgraduate theses and scientific articles published in several databases using inclusion criteria that had been made in Latin America, in countries with similar economic conditions, and also in the USA to present a point of comparison. The objective of this review is to broaden the readers' understanding of the causes of the increasing numbers of stray dogs and the reasons why people abandon pets in the streets, specifically in Latin America. It also discusses adoption and responsible ownership, identifies what failed in promoting positive human-

Live and Wet Markets: Food Access versus the Risk of Disease Emergence.

Emerging zoonotic diseases exert a significant burden on human health and have considerable socioeconomic impact worldwide. In Asia, live animals as well as animal products are commonly sold in informal markets. The interaction of humans, live domestic animals for sale, food products, and wild and scavenging animals, creates a risk for emerging infectious diseases. Such markets have been in the spotlight as sources of zoonotic viruses, for example, avian influenza viruses and coronaviruses, Here, we bring data together on the global impact of live and wet markets on the emergence of zoonotic d

Kidney-on-a-Chip: A New Technology for Predicting Drug Efficacy, Interactions, and Drug-induced Nephrotoxicity.

BACKGROUND: Kidney dysfunction resulting from various drugs is an important issue during the drug development process. Traditional in vivo animal experiments are limited with respect to evaluating drug efficacy and nephrotoxicity due to discrepancies in drug pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics between humans and animals, and static cell culture experiments cannot fully reflect the actual microphysiological environment in humans. METHOD: In this review article, authors collected manually relevant bibliographic databases including journal articles and textbooks related to microfluidics, kidne

Understanding zoonotic spillover interfaces for the design of a One Health education intervention: a qualitative baseline study from rural Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Prevention of zoonotic spillover requires an understanding of how human, animal, and environmental interactions shape risk in everyday life. Efforts have focused largely on surveillance and response rather than on primary prevention informed by lived experience. In Southeast Asia-a recognised hotspot for zoonotic emergence-there is limited qualitative evidence describing how spillover risk is shaped by routine practices, environmental change, and structural constraints, and how such evidence can inform the design of One Health education interventions. METHODS: We conducted a forma

Effects of guest feeding programs on captive giraffe behavior.

Zoological institutions develop human-animal interaction opportunities for visitors to advance missions of conservation, education, and recreation; however, the animal welfare implications largely have yet to be evaluated. This behavioral study was the first to quantify impacts of guest feeding programs on captive giraffe behavior and welfare, by documenting giraffe time budgets that included both normal and stereotypic behaviors. Thirty giraffes from nine zoos (six zoos with varying guest feeding programs and three without) were observed using both instantaneous scan sampling and continuous b

Is the neighborhood of interaction in human crowds metric, topological, or visual?

Global patterns of collective motion in bird flocks, fish schools, and human crowds are thought to emerge from local interactions within a neighborhood of interaction, the zone in which an individual is influenced by their neighbors. Both metric and topological neighborhoods have been reported in animal groups, but this question has not been addressed for human crowds. The answer has important implications for modeling crowd behavior and predicting crowd disasters such as jams, crushes, and stampedes. In a metric neighborhood, an individual is influenced by all neighbors within a fixed radius,

Human limb malformations; an approach to the molecular basis of development.

Analysis of human inherited limb malformations and of mouse mutants copying individual human mutations team up to promote the understanding of vertebrate limb development as a model for molecular regulatory interactions in animals. The strength of the human genetic contribution lies in the increasingly complete information on the human genome, transcriptome and proteome, as well as in the wealth of individual mutations interfering with limb development available for study. Based on the strong fundament of the human genome project, mapping and identification of novel genes associated with limb

Host-Parasite Interaction in Sarcoptes scabiei Infestation in Porcine Model with a Preliminary Note on Its Genetic Lineage from India.

The burrowing mite Sarcoptes scabiei causes scabies in humans or mange in animals. It infests a wide range of mammalian species including livestock, companion animals, wild animals, and humans. Differential diagnosis of Sarcoptes varieties is key for epidemiological studies and for formulation of an eradication program. Host-parasite interaction at the systemic level is very important to understand the pathogenicity of the mite. This communication deals with the preliminary report on the genetic characterization of S. scabiei from India. Moreover, the effect of S. scabiei infestation on host p

[Oxytocin and its receptor: molecular and therapeutic approaches].

It is known since the fifties that oxytocin is a neurohormone synthesized in the brain and released in blood circulation to trigger uterus contraction during delivery. It is also involved in milk ejection during breast-feeding. Over the past 25 years, many other central and peripheral functions have been discovered, in particular for attachment between child and parents as well as between individuals and interaction between a human being and its social group. Over this period, we have studied the functional supramolecular architecture of the hormone bound to its receptor. This information was

The interaction of clozapine with the meta-chlorophenylpiperazine (mCPP) discriminative stimulus.

The psychotropic effects of the 5-HT2C agonist mCPP in human subjects are blocked by the atypical antipsychotic clozapine, but not by typical antipsychotics. An understanding of the mechanistic basis for the interaction of clozapine and mCPP would provide further insight into the basis for its unique therapeutic effects in humans. Drug-induced stimulus control provides an animal model for the subjective effects of psychotropic agents in humans. In the present study, the interaction of the atypical antipsychotic clozapine and the typical antipsychotic fluphenazine with the mCPP-stimulus were de

Dynamic behavior of swine influenza transmission during the breed-slaughter process.

Global influenza pandemics have brought about various public health crises, such as the 2009 H1N1 swine flu. Actually, most swine influenza infections occur during the breed-slaughter process. However, there is little research about the mathematical model to elaborate on the swine influenza transmission with human-pig interaction. In this paper, a new breed-slaughter model with swine influenza transmission is proposed, and the equilibrium points of the model are calculated subsequently. Meanwhile, we analyze the existence of the equilibrium points by the persistence theory, and discuss their s

Exploring the Dynamics of Canine-Assisted Interactions: A Wearable Approach to Understanding Interspecies Well-Being.

Canine-assisted interactions (CAIs) have been explored to offer therapeutic benefits to human participants in various contexts, from addressing cancer-related fatigue to treating post-traumatic stress disorder. Despite their widespread adoption, there are still unresolved questions regarding the outcomes for both humans and animals involved in these interactions. Previous attempts to address these questions have suffered from core methodological weaknesses, especially due to absence of tools for an efficient objective evaluation and lack of focus on the canine perspective. In this article, we
