Relative humidity, temperature, and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: Findings from the Project Viva cohort.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is a multi-system hypertensive disorder of pregnancy that is a leading cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Prior studies disagree on the cause and even the presence of seasonal patterns in its incidence. Using unsuitable time windows for seasonal exposures can bias model results, potentially explaining these inconsistencies. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate humidity and temperature as possible causes for seasonal trends in preeclampsia in Project Viva, a prebirth cohort in Boston, Massachusetts, considering only exposure windows that precede diseas

Non-hygroscopic ionogel-based humidity-insensitive iontronic sensor arrays for intra-articular pressure sensing.

Implanted pressure sensors can provide pressure information to assess localized health conditions of specific tissues or organs, such as the intra-articular pressure within knee joints. However, the prerequisites for implanted sensors pose greater challenges than those for wearables or for robots: aside from biocompatibility and tissue-like softness, they must also exhibit humidity insensitivity and high-pressure resolution across a broad pressure spectrum. Iontronic sensors can provide superior sensing properties, but they undergo property degradation in wet environments due to the hygroscopi

Tough polyvinyl alcohol-gelatin biological macromolecules ionic hydrogel temperature, humidity, stress and strain, sensors.

High strength, high toughness and high sensitivity were some of the most popular characteristics of flexible sensors. However, the mechanical properties and reproducibility of current single biomacromolecule gelatin hydrogel sensors are lower, and few hydrogel sensors have been able to provide excellent mechanical properties and flexibility at the same time so far. To address this challenge, a simple method to prepare tough polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and gelatin hydrogel was proposed in this study. The PVA-gelatin-Fe3+ biological macromolecules hydrogel was prepared by a freeze-casting-assisted s

Functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Highly Stable Room Temperature and Humidity-Tolerant Triethylamine Sensing.

Triethylamine (TEA) poses a significant threat to our health and is extremely difficult to detect at the parts-per-billion (ppb) level at room temperature. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are versatile materials used in chemiresistive vapor sensing. However, achieving high sensitivity and selectivity with a low detection limit remains a challenge for pristine CNTs, hindering their widespread commercial application. To address these issues, we propose functionalized multiwalled CNTs (MWCNTs) with carboxylic acid (COOH)-based sensing channels for ultrasensitive TEA detection under ambient conditions. Ad

Porcine Corneas Incubated at Low Humidity Present Characteristic Features Found in Dry Eye Disease.

Dry eye is a multifactorial disease that affects the ocular surface and tear fluid. Current treatment options include lubricant eye drop application several times a day. However, these eye drops often cause local side effects like ocular allergies or blurred vision after the application. To test new treatment options, a robust dry eye model is needed. Here, a porcine ex vivo model was established by means of incubation of porcine corneas in low humidity (LH) and characterized by histological damage evaluation, epithelial thickness and by relevant dry eye markers, such as interleukin 1 beta (IL

Elucidating the Humidity-Induced Degradation of Ni-Rich Layered Cathodes for Li-Ion Batteries.

Ni-rich layered oxides, in a general term of Li(NixCoyMn1-x-y)O2 (x > 0.5), are widely recognized as promising candidates for improving the specific energy and lowering the cost for next-generation Li-ion batteries. However, the high surface reactivity of these materials results in side reactions during improper storage and notable gas release when the cell is charged beyond 4.3 V vs Li+/Li0. Therefore, in this study, we embark on a comprehensive investigation on the moisture sensitivity of LiNi0.85Co0.1Mn0.05O2 by aging it in a controlled environment at a constant room-temperature relative hu

Optical fiber humidity sensor based on a hollow core fiber filled with BPQDs-PVA.

An optical fiber Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometric humidity sensor based on black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is proposed for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, and experimentally verified. The sensor is constructed by splicing a brief hollow core fiber (HCF) with a single-mode fiber (SMF) and filling the BPQDs-PVA compound into the HCF. When the proposed humidity sensor is placed in a humidity environment, BPQDs-PVA adsorbs water molecules in the air with increasing humidity, which changes the length of the FP cavity, as well as the refractive index o

Enabling Field Asymmetric Ion Mobility Spectrometry Separation of Fentanyl-Related Compounds Using Controlled Humidity.

Due to the widespread abuse of opioids in recent years, the development of quick and reliable methods for analyzing compounds such as fentanyl and its derivatives is increasingly important. Ahead of online mass spectrometric analysis, field asymmetric ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) has previously been used for rapid ion prefiltering and demonstrated significantly improved peak capacity with the addition of vapor modifiers to the carrier gas. The application of FAIMS-mass spectrometry (MS) in the analysis of fentanyl and related compounds is presented herein with the use of a water vapor mod

Effects of Relative Humidity on Impregnated Filters Used in Measurement of Airborne Sulfur Dioxide.

Impregnated filters treated with alkali and humectant were first used as collection media to assess occupational exposure to sulfur dioxide (SO2), as outlined in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Method 6004 in 1979. Since then, updated treatment protocols have been proposed with decreased amounts of alkali and glycerol, which claim the same filtering capacity. However, there has been no report on how the collection of SO2 on such impregnated media is influenced by relative humidity (RH). This study investigated the role of glycerol (G) amount on impregnated filters (G2

Improvement of Gas and Humidity Sensing Properties of Organ-like MXene by Alkaline Treatment.

Ti3C2T x MXene with an organ-like structure was synthesized from Ti3AlC2 (MAX phase) through the typical hydrofluoric (HF) acid etching method. Ti3C2T x MXene was further alkaline-treated with a sodium hydroxide solution to obtain alkalized Ti3C2T x. Room-temperature planar-type gas- and humidity-sensing devices were also fabricated by utilizing Ti3C2T x MXene and alkalized Ti3C2T x sensing material based on the dip coating method, respectively. The intercalation of the alkali metal ion (Na+) and the increase of the surface terminal oxygen-fluorine ratio ([O]/[F]) in Ti3C2T x can effectively i

Humidity- and light-driven actuators based on carbon nanotube-coated paper and polymer composite.

Multi-responsive actuators driven by different stimuli (e.g. light, humidity, electricity) have attracted intense attention recently for the advantages of being used in various environments and show enormous actuation. In this work, we propose humidity- and light-driven actuators based on carbon nanotube (CNT)-coated paper and a biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) composite. The CNT-paper/BOPP actuator shows large bending actuation when driven by humidity change (curvature of 1.2 cm-1) and near infrared (NIR) light irradiation (curvature up to 1.6 cm-1). The great actuation performances ou

Static flexural properties of hedgehog spines conditioned in coupled temperature and relative humidity environments.

Hedgehogs are agile climbers, scaling trees and plants to heights exceeding 10m while foraging insects. Hedgehog spines (a.k.a. quills) provide fall protection by absorbing shock and could offer insights for the design of lightweight, material-efficient, impact-resistant structures. There has been some study of flexural properties of hedgehog spines, but an understanding of how this keratinous biological material is affected by various temperature and relative humidity treatments, or how spine color (multicolored vs. white) affects mechanics, is lacking. To bridge this gap in the literature, w

Reversible size-tuning of self-assembled silver nanoparticles in phospholipid membranes via humidity control.

A monolayer of 5-nm-sized Ag nanoparticles embedded in a liquid-crystalline lipid membrane undergoes a reversible morphological change during hydration and dehydration of the lipid membrane. High mobility of the encapsulating lipid molecules, chemically bound to the Ag atoms, induces redistribution of metal particles to produce significant and optically detectable changes in nanoparticle morphology. The morphological change occurs on a time scale that enables the Ag-nanoparticle-embedded membrane to be used as a convenient visual sensor for moisture and other organic solvents, as well as for b

Effect of high versus low ambient humidity on the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea.

BACKGROUND: Surface tension forces appear to make a significant contribution to upper airway closure in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). It is possible that drying of the upper airway mucosa at night might contribute to these surface tension forces and the severity of OSA might therefore change with alteration of the ambient humidity. METHODS: A randomised single blind crossover study of high ambient relative humidity (HRH) versus low ambient relative humidity (LRH) was performed in 12 men of mean (SD) age 49 (9) years with mild OSA (apnoea/hypopnoea index (AHI) 14 (5.2)). Discrepancy between microcellular stress and macrophysiological responses in humid heat: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: This systematic review evaluates cross-level physiological responses to humid-heat stress and proposes the "Stress Decoupling" framework to explain the dissociation between microcellular signals and macro-functional outputs. METHODS: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, five databases were searched through December 2025. A two-tier synthesis integrated studies reporting both micro-biochemical (e.g., heat shock protein 72 (HSP72), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and macrophysiological (e.g., heart rate (HR), rating of perceived exe

Emergence of Dirofilaria immitis in humid coastal zones: Epidemiological predictors and molecular characterization.

Canine heartworm, a parasitic zoonosis caused by Dirofilaria immitis, is expanding geographically. This study investigated the prevalence, associated risk factors, and molecular characteristics of D. immitis in dogs from Ilhéus, Bahia, a coastal tourist region in northeastern Brazil previously considered non-endemic. In a cross-sectional study with 481 domestic dogs, blood samples were tested for adult D. immitis antigens (SNAP® 4Dx® Plus) and microfilariae (modified Knott's test). Risk factors were analyzed using logistic regression and spatial analysis, including the association with the Nor

The effect of repeated hurricanes on the age of organic carbon in humid tropical forest soil.

Increasing hurricane frequency and intensity with climate change is likely to affect soil organic carbon (C) stocks in tropical forests. We examined the cycling of C between soil pools and with depth at the Luquillo Experimental Forest in Puerto Rico in soils over a 30-year period that spanned repeated hurricanes. We used a nonlinear matrix model of soil C pools and fluxes ("soilR") and constrained the parameters with soil and litter survey data. Soil chemistry and stable and radiocarbon isotopes were measured from three soil depths across a topographic gradient in 1988 and 2018. Our results s
