The ongoing controversies about the neural basis of tinnitus, whether linked with central neural gain or not, may hamper efforts to develop therapies. We asked to what extent measurable audiometric characteristics of tinnitus without (T) or with co-occurrence of hyperacusis (TH) are distinguishable on the level of cortical responses. To accomplish this, electroencephalography (EEG) and concurrent functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) were measured while patients performed an attentionally demanding auditory discrimination task using stimuli within the individual tinnitus frequency (fTi

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate differences in tinnitus impact, hyperacusis and hearing threshold level (HTL) between patients with unilateral and bilateral tinnitus. For patients with unilateral tinnitus, to compare audiological variables for the tinnitus ear and the non-tinnitus ear. To assess whether the presence of unilateral tinnitus increases the likelihood of interaural hearing asymmetry (relative to bilateral tinnitus) that warrants referral for an MRI scan.
DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional.
STUDY SAMPLE: Data regarding HTLs and responses to self-report questionnaires were collected from

PURPOSE: Many workers in developing countries are exposed to unsafe occupational noise due to inadequate health and safety practices. We tested the hypotheses that occupational noise exposure and aging affect speech-perception-in-noise (SPiN) thresholds, self-reported hearing ability, tinnitus presence, and hyperacusis severity among Palestinian workers.
METHOD: Palestinian workers (N = 251, aged 18-70 years) without diagnosed hearing or memory impairments completed online instruments including a noise exposure questionnaire; forward and backward digit span tests; hyperacusis questionnaire; t

Recent studies have suggested that hyperacusis, an abnormal hypersensitivity to ordinary environmental sounds, may be characterized by certain resting-state cortical oscillatory patterns, even with no sound stimulus. However, previous studies are limited in that most studied subjects with other comorbidities that may have affected cortical activity. In this regard, to assess ongoing cortical oscillatory activity in idiopathic hyperacusis patients with no comorbidities, we compared differences in resting-state cortical oscillatory patterns between five idiopathic hyperacusis subjects and five n

BACKGROUND: In the United Kingdom, audiologist-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a key intervention to alleviate the distress caused by tinnitus and its comorbid hyperacusis. However, the availability of face-to-face CBT is limited, and such therapy involves significant costs. CBT provided via the internet provides a potential solution to improve access to CBT for tinnitus.
PURPOSE: The aim was to perform a preliminary assessment of the effect of a specific program of nonguided internet-based CBT for tinnitus, denoted iCBT(T), in alleviating the problems caused by tinnitus alone

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the proportion of patients seen in a tinnitus and hyperacusis therapy clinic for whom presentation levels based on the British Society of Audiology (BSA)-recommended procedures for pure-tone audiometry and determination of uncomfortable loudness levels (ULLs) exceed ULLs, leading to discomfort during administration of these procedures.
METHOD: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study of 362 consecutive patients who attended a National Health Service audiology clinic for tinnitus and/or hyperacusis rehabilitation.
RESULTS: For 21% of the pati

A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the Tinnitus Impact Questionnaire (TIQ) was performed. In contrast to commonly used tinnitus questionnaires, the TIQ is intended solely to assess the impact of tinnitus by not including items related to hearing loss or tinnitus loudness. This was a psychometric study based on a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of clinical data. Data were available for 155 new patients who had attended a tinnitus and hyperacusis clinic in the UK within a five-month period and had completed the TIQ. The mean age was 54 years (standard deviation = 14 years). The TIQ d

Tinnitus and hyperacusis are two debilitating conditions that are highly comorbid. It has been postulated that they may originate from similar pathophysiological mechanisms such as an increase in central gain. Interestingly, sound stimulation has been shown to reduce central gain and is currently used for the treatment of both conditions. This study investigates the effect of sound stimulation on both tinnitus and hyperacusis in the same patients. Two distinct series of tinnitus participants were tested: one with normal or near-normal hearing (n=16) and one with hearing loss (n=14). A broadban

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is often associated with the phantom sound of tinnitus. However, the degree of the association between severity of hearing loss and tinnitus loudness taking into account the impact of other variables (e.g., emotional disturbances) is not fully understood. This is an important question for audiologists who are specialized in tinnitus rehabilitation as patients often ask whether the loudness of their tinnitus will increase if their hearing gets worse.
PURPOSE: To explore the relationship between tinnitus loudness and pure tone hearing thresholds.

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex condition impacting social communication, behavior, and interests. ASD affects 1 in 100 children globally, with a higher prevalence in boys. Auditory disorders, including hyperacusis, are common in ASD, yet the correlation between Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) wave latencies and ASD severity, especially with hyperacusis, is under-researched. This study investigates ABR wave latencies in ASD children, exploring their relationship with ASD severity and h as a potential screening tool for ASD. Early diagnose and therapy could enhance t

Hearing loss changes the auditory brain, sometimes maladaptively. When deprived of cochlear input, central auditory neurons become more active spontaneously and begin to respond more strongly and synchronously to better preserved sound frequencies. This spontaneous and sound-evoked central hyperactivity has been postulated to trigger tinnitus and hyperacusis, respectively. Localized hyperactivity has also been observed after long-term exposure to noise levels that do not damage the cochlea. Adult animals exposed to bands of nondamaging noise exhibited suppressed spontaneous and sound-evoked ac

The objectives of this study were to (1) assess if previously reported unidimensional factor structure of the Misophonia Impact Questionnaire (MIQ), Tinnitus Impact Questionnaire (TIQ), and Hyperacusis Impact Questionnaire (HIQ) can be confirmed in a nonclinical population, and (2) examine test-retest reliability and establish the minimum detectable change (MDC) for MIQ, TIQ and HIQ. 451 people completed the MIQ and HIQ sections of an online survey. A sub-sample of 173/451 who had tinnitus completed the TIQ too. 130/451 participants completed the second survey with 2 weeks interval for the MIQ

BACKGROUND: We previously reported the results of exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of the Hyperacusis Impact Questionnaire (HIQ), the Sound Sensitivity Symptoms Questionnaire (SSSD), and the Screening for Anxiety and Depression in Tinnitus (SAD-T). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) is necessary to confirm the latent constructs determined using EFA. CFA should use different samples but with similar characteristics to those used for EFA.
PURPOSE: The aim was to use CFA to confirm latent constructs derived using EFA of the HIQ, SSSQ, and SAD-T. We further evaluated the psychometric properties

Background/Objectives: The Sound Sensitivity Symptoms Questionnaire version 2 (SSSQ2) is a brief clinical tool with six items designed to be used (1) as a measure for severity of sound sensitivity symptoms in general (based on its total score) and (2) as a checklist to screen different forms of sound sensitivity. The objective of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the SSSQ2. Method: This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 451 people completed the online survey. A total of 154 people completed the survey twice with a two-week interval to establish test-retest reliabili

INTRODUCTION: A ringing sensation in the ear is referred to as tinnitus. It is one of the common symptoms associated with hearing loss. It can be associated even with loudness-related conditions, such as hyperacusis.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between tinnitus and hyperacusis in individuals with normal hearing and up-to-mild hearing loss, focusing on the manifestation of loudness intolerance.
METHODS: The Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) was administered among 35 adults having primary complaints of tinnitus with normal hearing and up-to-mild hearing loss. Further, the Modifi

People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) frequently show the symptoms of oversensitivity to sound (hyperacusis). Although the previous studies have investigated methods for quantifying hyperacusis in ASD, appropriate physiological signs for quantifying hyperacusis in ASD remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the relationship of loudness tolerance with the threshold of the stapedial reflex and with contralateral suppression of the distortion product otoacoustic emissions, which has been suggested to be related to hyperacusis in people without ASD. We tested an ASD group and a neurot
