Adjunctive Hyperbaric Oxygen in the Treatment of Thermal Burns.

A significant and consistently positive body of evidence from animal and human studies of thermal injury supports the use of hyperbaric oxygen as a means of preventing dermal ischemia, reducing edema, modulating the zone of stasis, preventing partial- to full-thickness conversion, preserving cellular metabolism, dampening inflammation, preventing infection, and promoting healing. The overwhelming majority of clinical reports have shown reduced mortality, length of hospital stays, number of surgeries, and cost of care. Hyperbaric oxygen has been demonstrated to be safe in the hands of those tho

Role of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Radiation Cystitis.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: To summarize existing literature on the outcomes of Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO2) therapy for RC and focus on recent updates since the original 2018 scoping review. RECENT FINDINGS: The literature continues to support HBO2's effectiveness at improving gross hematuria with recent studies showing at least a partial response in 66-100% of patients. Recent data further show an improvement in both urinary symptoms and overall quality of life measures. Data further shows that HBO2 is safe and adverse events are usually associated with barotrauma, particularly otic barotrauma. Rece

The role of hyperbaric oxygen treatment in a case of pyomyositis.

Pyomyositis is a serious bacterial infection of the skeletal muscles, usually treated with antibiotics and surgical drainage. The success of medical or surgical treatment is often delayed or less effective when tissue hypoxia is present. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is currently being studied as a helpful additional treatment for various conditions, especially those involving complications of tissue hypoxia. In this case report, we describe a 29-year-old male who developed chronic pyomyositis and a right lower leg ulcer after failure of multiple surgeries, including fasciotomy, debridement

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in the Treatment of Crohn's Disease.

Background/Objectives: Our study describes hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) as an additional therapy in the conservative treatment of Crohn's disease (CD) and its benefit in the early postoperative period to prevent surgical complications and improve gastrointestinal motility. Methods: This retrospective study evaluated HBOT in patients hospitalized at the Clinical Hospital Center Split for complications of CD between 2015 and 2020. Patients (N = 61) aged 19 to 67 with perianal fistulas, abscesses, fistulas, obstruction, stenosis, or bleeding were included, excluding those with ulcerative coli

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Japan, Now and in the Future.

The principles of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) have been known since ancient times. Empirical knowledge regarding relief of decompression sickness (DCS) symptoms in divers re-entering a pressurized environment was reported as early as 4,500 BC. DCS was recognized as a disease after deep diving became possible because of diving helmets. DCS also occurs in high-pressure dry workspaces (caissons) developed to construct bridges and tunnels. After the discovery of oxygen in the 18th century, its administration was found to be beneficial in treating conditions that developed after rapid decompre

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment of neonates: a case series.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) administers oxygen under high pressure, mainly for decompression illness, carbon monoxide intoxication, wound healing, infections, and acute peripheral arterial ischaemia. There has been limited use in newborn infants. This case series aims to highlight the potential role of HBOT in management of rare and challenging conditions encountered in the neonatal period. Although HBOT is widely available, its application in newborns remains limited and not well established. We present three neonatal cases: acute peripheral ischaemia; vascular compromise due to thrombos

Treatment with hyperbaric oxygen in a Crohn's disease patient.

Despite advances in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, particularly with biological therapies and new small molecules, a significant gap still exists in achieving persistent remission from a symptomatic, biomarker, and endoscopic perspective. In this context, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is considered as a therapeutic strategy. This approach has also been suggested for managing ischemic ulcers located at anastomotic sites. In this clinical case, we describe the clinical and endoscopic evolution of a challenging-to-manage Crohn's disease (CD) patient with an ischemic ulcer at the

The role of hyperbaric oxygen in osteoradionecrosis-a prophylactic insight.

BACKGROUND: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is an uncommon and debilitating consequence of head and neck radiotherapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been advocated for prophylaxis prior to performing dentoalveolar procedures. The aim of this study was to evaluate a prophylactic HBOT protocol and describe the outcomes of susceptible individuals. METHODS: A retrospective audit of adults who attended the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department at the Royal Adelaide Hospital (South Australia) who received dental extractions with a history of radiotherapy to the jaws from 2008 to 2020. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Improving Penile Calciphylaxis.

Calciphylaxis is a rare and poorly understood disease that almost exclusively occurs in end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It is characterized by the calcification of medium and small dermal arterioles with resultant gangrenous necrosis. Patients develop exquisitely painful skin ulceration and necrosis, typically in the lower extremities. Treatments are severely limited, and mortality is high, as few treatment options provide a survival benefit. Improvement in a few calciphylaxis cases affecting the extremities or abdomen have been reported using hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), however, very fe

Hyperbaric oxygen-associated seizure leading to stroke.

Oxygen toxicity seizures are a well-known complication of hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT). Until now, there have not been any reported cases of an acute ischaemic event (stroke) as the result of a HBOT-associated oxygen toxicity seizure. We report an event in which a seizure and stroke occurred together and consider that the stroke may have been caused by seizure-induced demand ischaemia. This challenges the generally held view that oxygen toxicity seizures in the clinical hyperbaric setting are benign. A discussion of the literature on the subject of seizure-induced brain injury is include

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for the Compromised Graft or Flap.

Significance: Tissue grafts and flaps are used to reconstruct wounds from trauma, chronic disease, tumor extirpation, burns, and infection. Despite careful surgical planning and execution, reconstructive failure can occur due to poor wound beds, radiation, random flap necrosis, vascular insufficiency, or ischemia-reperfusion (IR). Traumatic avulsions and amputated composite tissues-compromised tissue-may fail from crush injury and excessively large sizes. While never intended, these complications result in tissue loss, additional surgery, accrued costs, and negative psychosocial patient effect

Proliferative retinopathy during hyperbaric oxygen treatment.

A 43-year-old male with type 2 diabetes mellitus, treated with insulin for 28 years and with an HbA1c of 7.9% six months prior, suffered from bilateral plantar ulcers refractory to specialised wound care. He underwent a planned 40 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) at 243 kPa for 90 minutes. Consent was given for this report. The patient's ophthalmic history included bilateral proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) identified on routine diabetic eye screening three years previously. This was treated with pan-retinal photocoagulation (PRP). Three months before starting HBOT, he un

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for acute coronary syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Acute coronary syndrome (ACS), includes acute myocardial infarction and unstable angina, is common and may prove fatal. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) will improve oxygen supply to the threatened heart and may reduce the volume of heart muscle that perishes. The addition of HBOT to standard treatment may reduce death rate and other major adverse outcomes. This an update of a review previously published in May 2004 and June 2010. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review was to assess the evidence for the effects of adjunctive HBOT in the treatment of ACS. We compared treatment regimens

Otological complications associated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

The objective of the present study was to clarify the features of otological complications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and the risk factors for these complications. We enrolled 1115 patients (776 males and 339 females; age 5-89 years) who underwent HBOT. All otological symptoms experienced during HBOT sessions were evaluated, and risk factors were analysed using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Otoscopic findings and interventions for otological complications were assessed in 58 symptomatic patients who visited the Otolaryngology Department. Otological symptoms were experien

[Tension pneumothorax during hyperbaric oxygen therapy].

The authors present a case of an 86-year-old man who developed tension pneumothorax while receiving hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for adhesive intestinal obstruction. The patient experienced general malaise and was admitted to our hospital with abdominal pain due to intestinal obstruction, which was revealed by computed tomography on day 3. He received HBOT from day 5. On day 6, while receiving the 2nd session of HBOT, he experienced severe dyspnea and backache after decompression and developed cardiac arrest soon after he was moved out of the compression chamber. Tension pneumothorax was d

Anaphylactic shock during hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

A case of a 38-year-old woman is reported who was treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy to cure a dehiscent wound. She suffered from "oral-allergy syndrome" (OAS) while eating certain fruits, and from itching when wearing latex gloves to handle hair dyes. Fifteen minutes after the start of compression, malaise, anxiety, dyspnoea, tachycardia, cold sweating and laryngeal stridor occurred. Despite intensive care treatment, face angioedema persisted for several days. On the basis of history, radioallergosorbent test (RAST) and prick tests, latex was assumed to be responsible for the anaphylactic
