Hyperglycemia with occipital seizures: images and visual evoked potentials.

PURPOSE: Hyperglycemia may rarely be seen with visual seizures. Observation of both visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in visual status epilepticus (SE) has not been reported. We describe acute and follow-up VEP and MRI findings of a patient with hyperglycemia-related visual SE of occipital origin. METHODS: In a 59-year-old diabetic woman, complex visual hallucinations and illusions developed with < or =10 seizures per hour as an initial manifestation of nonketotic hyperglycemia. RESULTS: Neurologic examination revealed ictal nystagmus to the right and conti

Hyperglycemia delays rostral initiation sites during neural tube closure.

Neural tube defects contribute greatly to perinatal loss, physical handicap, mental retardation and other developmental defects, yet the mechanisms through which they occur are poorly understood. One hindrance to the study of these defects at the cellular and molecular levels is the low frequency with which they arise in susceptible animals. The present study utilizes a culture system for the study of rodent exencephaly, an animal model of human anencephaly, in which a high frequency of affected animals are obtained by culture in hyperglycemic rat serum. Rat embryos were dissected at day 9.5 f

[Hydrogen ion concentration in tumor issue and artificial hyperglycemia].

A series of articles concerned with determination of pH in the tumour and with studies of pH changes under induced hyperglycemia are reviewed. Based on the available data the following conclusions are drawn: pH in the tumour tissue is lower than in the initial normal or surrounding tissues by 0.5 units on the average; the optimal pH value is more acidic; alkalosis in the tumour-bearing organism is a hypercompensatory reaction of the host as a result of advanced tumour in which pH is dropped; the induced hyperglycemia promotes a pronounced decrease of pH in the tumour, pH of the normal tissues

Acetaminophen-induced hepatic glycogen depletion and hyperglycemia in mice.

Two hours following administration of a hepatotoxic dose of acetaminophen (500 mg/kg, i.p.) to mice, liver sections stained with periodic acid Schiff reagent showed centrilobular hepatic glycogen depletion. A chemical assay revealed that following acetaminophen administration (500 mg/kg) hepatic glycogen was depleted by 65% at 1 hr and 80% at 2 hr, whereas glutathione was depleted by 65% at 0.5 hr and 80% at 1.5 hr. Maximal glycogen depletion (85% at 2.5 hr correlated with maximal hyperglycemia (267 mg/100 ml at 2.5 hr). At 4.0 hr following acetaminophen administration, blood glucose levels we

Amygdala astrocyte senescence drives stress-induced anxiety and hyperglycemia.

Chronic stress (CS) exacerbates anxiety and hyperglycemia, emerging as a key risk factor for type 2 diabetes, yet the mechanism remains unclear. Here, we found that CS induces hyperglycemia and enhanced amygdaloid astrocytic senescence in mice. The amygdaloid astrocytic senescence was mediated by the reduction of hexokinase 2 (HK2) driven by pre-B cell leukemia homeobox transcription factor 1 (PBX1). The astrocytic Hk2 deletion mice and amygdala-specific astrocytic Hk2 knockdown mice both display anxiety-like behaviors and hyperglycemia. The reduction of HK2 in astrocytes reduces L-serine synt

Teprotumumab-Associated Hyperglycemia: A Large-Scale Multinational Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Teprotumumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting the insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor, represents the first Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved treatment for thyroid eye disease (TED). However, hyperglycemia has emerged as a significant adverse event, with limited real-world data on its incidence and clinical impact. This study aimed to evaluate the risk of glycemic abnormalities associated with teprotumumab treatment using a large, multinational electronic health records database. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX Global Collaborative N

Managing capivasertib-induced hyperglycemia: a report of 3 cases.

Phosphoinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B (AKT) pathway inhibition is an important therapeutic strategy for hormone receptor positive and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative advanced breast cancer. Capivasertib, an oral pan-AKT inhibitor, improves progression-free survival in combination with fulvestrant but is frequently associated with hyperglycemia. Despite this recognized adverse effect, consensus management guidelines are lacking. We describe 3 patients who developed capivasertib-associated hyperglycemia, 2 of whom had severe hyperglycemia with alpelisib therapy, a phosphoi

Chorea Hyperglycemia Basal Ganglia (CHBG) Syndrome: A Case Report.

Chorea, characterized by sudden, involuntary movements of the face and limbs, arises from various causes, including neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic disorders, and structural brain changes, notably in the basal ganglia. Acute lesions in the basal ganglia due to ischemia or vascular pathology can also precipitate chorea. Hyperglycemia-induced basal ganglia changes, termed chorea hyperglycemia basal ganglia, predominantly affect elderly females with type 2 diabetes. We report a 62-year-old female with poorly managed diabetes presenting with involuntary jerking movements, initially in the ri

Hyperglycemia exacerbates placental inflammation induced by Porphyromonas gingivalis-lipopolysaccharide.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies suggest a link between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and periodontitis. In this context, Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) and its byproducts, including lipopolysaccharide (Pg-LPS), may translocate to the placenta, potentially intensifying pro-inflammatory mechanisms in a hyperglycemic environment. This study aimed to assess the pro-inflammatory simultaneous stimulus effect of hyperglycemia (HG) and Pg-LPS in human term placental explants. METHODS: Fresh placental explants from healthy (n = 10) and GDM (n = 5) pregnant women were stimulated under normogly

Effect of Maternal Hyperglycemia on Fetal Pancreatic Islet Development.

Hyperglycemia during fetal development disturbs extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis and deposition patterns, which disrupts organogenesis and adult organ function. Although the ECM cooperates in pancreas development, little is known about the effects of hyperglycemia on the pancreatic ECM during development. This study investigates the effect of severe maternal hyperglycemia on ECM composition and endocrine pancreas development in E19.0 mouse fetuses. Deposition patterns of pan-laminin, laminin (alpha 1 and gamma 1 chains) and integrin alpha 3 were evaluated by immunostaining. The proliferati

Impact of different severity hyperglycemia on erythrocyte rheological properties1.

BACKGROUND: The triad "insulin resistance, prediabetes, diabetes" is three independent neologies with characteristic features and development. In addition, each are characterized by progression and the possibility of transition from one form to other. Due to the fact that diabetes is one of the common diseases associated with high rates of disability, it is necessary to improve diagnostic methods and educational regimens for successful prevention and treatment of the disease. OBJECTIVE: We investigated Band 3 protein (B3p) level, osmotic resistance of erythrocytes, the total antioxidant activ

Maternal hyperglycemia and long-term consequences for human offspring.

Exposure to maternal diabetes is considered one of the factors during foetal development, leading not only to several complications during pregnancy but also to an increased risk of chronic diseases in later life and exerting a lasting impact on the health of offspring. Animal models play a role in establishing a clear cause-and-effect relationship between prenatal exposure to maternal diabetes and the enduring well-being of offspring, helping to control for variables that could distort the results. This study aims to systematically analysis long-term offspring complications associated with ma

Admission hyperglycemia, stroke subtypes, outcomes in acute ischemic stroke.

AIMS: Whether admission hyperglycemia is differentially associated with early vascular outcomes in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) depending on stroke subtype has been incompletely delineated. METHODS: In a multicenter, prospective stroke registry, patients with AIS were categorized based on admission glucose levels into normoglycemia, moderate hyperglycemia, and severe hyperglycemia (<140mg/dl, 140-179mg/dl, and ≥180mg/dl, respectively) groups. Multivariate analysis assessed the interaction between the hyperglycemia and ischemic stroke subtypes of large artery atherothrombosis (LAA), cardioembol

Diabetes-Associated Hyperglycemia Causes Rapid-Onset Ocular Surface Damage.

PURPOSE: The metabolic alterations due to chronic hyperglycemia are well-known to cause diabetes-associated complications. Short-term hyperglycemia has also been shown to cause many acute changes, including hemodynamic alterations and osmotic, oxidative, and inflammatory stress. The present study was designed to investigate whether diabetes-associated hyperglycemia can cause rapid-onset detrimental effects on the tear film, goblet cells, and glycocalyx and can lead to activation of an inflammatory cascade or cellular stress response in the cornea. METHODS: Mouse models of type 1 and type 2 di

Management of Hyperglycemia in Hospitalized Patients Receiving Parenteral Nutrition.

Almost half of inpatients on parenteral nutrition experience hyperglycemia, which increases the risk of complications and mortality. The blood glucose target for hospitalized patients on parenteral nutrition is 7.8 to 10.0 mmol/L (140 to 180 mg/dL). For patients with diabetes, the same parenteral nutrition formulae as for patients without diabetes can be used, as long as blood glucose levels can be adequately controlled using insulin. Insulin can be delivered via the subcutaneous or intravenous route or, alternatively, added to parenteral nutrition admixtures. Combining parenteral with enteral

Olfactory marker protein regulation of glucagon secretion in hyperglycemia.

The olfactory marker protein (OMP), which is also expressed in nonolfactory tissues, plays a role in regulating the kinetics and termination of olfactory transduction. Thus, we hypothesized that OMP may play a similar role in modulating the secretion of hormones involved in Ca2+ and cAMP signaling, such as glucagon. In the present study, we confirmed nonolfactory α-cell-specific OMP expression in human and mouse pancreatic islets as well as in the murine α-cell line αTC1.9. Glucagon and OMP expression increased under hyperglycemic conditions. Omp knockdown in hyperglycemic αTC1.9 cells using s
