Decreased motor activity of hyperactive children on dextroamphetamine during active gym program.

The motor activity of 10 hyperactive boys was measured during eight 1-hour active gym classes. Children received either dextroaomphetamine (0.5 mg/kg) or placebo elixir before each class, in a double-blind design. The program for each of the classes was participation in the active sports: hockey, basketball, and/or roller skating; the "task" throughout each hour was to play vigorously and continuously. The boys' mean hourly activity following amphetamine was slightly but significantly less than that following placebo. This finding is contradictory to the hypothesis that improved attention to a

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome. Familial occurrence and precipitation by methylphenidate therapy.

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome was independently ascertained in two male cousins once removed. Previous studies have shown familial clustering of individuals with tics, but no consistent pattern of inheritance of Tourette's syndrome has been apparent. The onset and later exacerbation of symptoms in our younger patient were associated with the administration of CNS stimulants given for excessive motor activity. The adverse effects of methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine therapy on Tourette's syndrome supports the hypothesis that this condition results from a relative excess of CNS catecholam

Defining Biliary Hyperkinesia and the Role of Cholecystectomy.

BACKGROUND: Functional gallbladder disorder is most commonly defined by biliary colic and low ejection fraction (EF) on cholescintigraphy. Biliary hyperkinesia is a controversial type of functional gallbladder disorder, and its definition and the role of cholecystectomy in treating functional gallbladder disorder remains unclear. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective review of patients who underwent cholecystokinin-stimulated cholescintigraphy and cholecystectomy at 3 Mayo Clinic sites between 2007 and 2020. Eligible patients were 18 years or older, presented with symptoms of biliary dis

Development of Hyperkinesias after Long-term Pallidal Stimulation for Idiopathic Segmental Dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Chronic deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the globus pallidus internus (GPi) has become an established treatment for dystonia. While bradykinetic symptoms may occur on chronic stimulation, the appearance of hyperkinetic movements has not been well characterized. CASE REPORT: We report on the development of hyperkinesias after more than 10 years of GPi DBS. DISCUSSION: Hyperkinesias may evolve upon long-term GPi DBS in dystonia. This might be related to a combined effect consisting of a reduced threshold for effective GPi stimulation for dystonia and spread of current to the globus

Role of the anterior thalamic nucleus in the motor hyperactivity induced by systemic MK-801 administration in rats.

Non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDA-R) antagonists have been extensively used in rodents to model psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia. Although the motor syndrome induced by acute and systemic administration of low doses of dizocilpine (MK-801) has been extensively characterized, its neurobiological basis is not fully understood. NMDA-R antagonists can disinhibit excitatory inputs in certain brain areas, but the precise circuitry is not fully known. We examined the involvement of the anterior thalamic nucleus (ATN) in hyperlocomotion and other related behaviors (stereotypies, a

[Movement disorders in stroke].

Dyskinesias are infrequent presentations in acute stroke (1%). They can be found more frequently as delayed presentations after a stroke, but the prevalence is not available from the literature. The full spectrum of hyper- and hypo-akinetic syndromes has been described, but three main pictures are rather specific of an acute stroke: limb shaking, hemichorea-hemiballism and unilateral asterixis. Besides limb shaking, that seems to reflect a transient diffuse ischemia of the frontosubcortical motor pathway, lesions are described at all levels of the frontosubcortical motor circuit including the

von Economo encephalitis.

In April 1917, Dr Constantin von Economo presented his clinical and pathologic findings of a new disease--soon to be part of a worldwide epidemic--before the Vienna Psychiatric Society. He named it encephalitis lethargica. After years of careful observation, he collected and analyzed thousands of cases and classified them into 3 clinical syndromes: somnolent-ophthalmoplegic, hyperkinetic, and amyostatic-akinetic forms. He described the now legendary postencephalitic Parkinsonism, noting that symptoms could emerge years after the original infection, often without signs of prodromal "flu." He em

Inhibition by antimanic drugs of hyperactivity induced by methamphetamine-chlordiazepoxide mixture in mice.

The effects of lithium chloride and other antimanic drugs on locomotor hyperactivity induced by a mixture of methamphetamine (MAMP) and chlordiazepoxide (CDZP) were examined in mice, using an Animex activity meter. CDZP (12.5 mg/kg) given SC in combination with MAMP (1 mg/kg) caused a marked increase in locomotor activity, as compared with that in mice treated with MAMP alone. However, when CDZP (12.5 mg/kg) was administered together with 0.5 or 2.0 mg/kg of MAMP, no significant enhancement was observed. Lithium (2 and 3 mEq/kg, IP) and carbamazepine (4 and 8 mg/kg, IP) inhibited the hyperacti

[Chronic toluene intoxication and hyperkinésie volitionnelle].

Hyperkinésie volitionnelle is one of the involuntary movements discriminated from intention tremor. It occurs idiopathically and with cerebral infarction, head trauma, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, hepatolenticular degeneration and polyneuropathy. Here, we report a case of toluene intoxication presenting hyperkinésie volitionnelle. A 28-year-old painter noticed a tremor of the upper extremities on December 1979. The tremor occurred both in posture and in voluntary movements. The tremor gradually developed and appeared in the legs in May 1980. Slight titubation of the trunk and head was mar

Specific reading retardation, hyperactive child syndrome, and juvenile delinquency.

The purpose of the study was to ascertain the extent to which a specific reading retardation leads to criminal development in adolescent and to what factors such development is due in these cases. For this purpose, 224 adolescents with a specific reading retardation were investigated. A relatively large number of these (12.1%) were prone to criminality between the ages of 15 and 20 years, whereas the severity of the specific reading retardation did not seem to contribute to this propensity. Symptoms of hyperactivity, on the other hand, seemed to contribute to criminal behaviour.

Responses of hyperactive boys to a behaviorally focused school attitude questionnaire.

The Teacher Approval-Disapproval Scale was administered to three groups of elementary school boys: those considered by a teacher as hyperactive and referrable; those considered as among the most active but not referrable; and normoactive classmates. The three groups of boys differed significantly in their responses to 8 of 11 individual scale items, which ask the child about the amount of teacher approval and disapproval directed toward himself personally or about the frequency of his own happiness and unhappiness in the classroom. The three groups of boys differed significantly on only 2 of 1

Post-traumatic Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy in a Pediatric Patient: A Rare Case and Diagnostic Challenge.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC), also known as stress-induced cardiomyopathy, is a rare condition in children that causes acute, severe, but often reversible systolic dysfunction of the left ventricle. Physical trauma is a recognized trigger, although distinguishing TTC from myocardial contusion in pediatric trauma cases can be challenging due to overlapping clinical features. We present the case of a six-year-old boy involved in a high-impact motor vehicle collision. The patient initially presented with multiple traumatic injuries, including fractures of the skull, ribs, and right upper extrem

Food additives and allergy.

There is ample evidence that food additives of several sorts may precipitate adverse reactions. Some of these have catastrophic potential such as sulfite sensitivity in asthmatic patients. Fortunately, asthmatic responses to a variety of additives are certainly not as prevalent as once feared, and are probably unusual. Restricted diets are of no general benefit in asthmatic patients. In contrast to asthma, urticarial or other cutaneous reactions to food additives are more common. A restricted diet for a few months' duration may be beneficial, although the mechanism through which this is achiev
