Hypnosis, rumination, and depression: catalyzing attention and mindfulness-based treatments.

Over the past 30 years, mental health practitioners, encouraged by rigorous empirical studies and literature and meta-analytic reviews, have increasingly appreciated the ability of hypnosis to modulate attention, imagination, and motivation in the service of therapeutic goals. This article describes how hypnosis can be used as an adjunctive procedure in the treatment of depression and rumination symptoms, in particular. The focus is on attention-based treatments that include rumination-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, cognitive control training, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. Th

Self-hypnosis, biofeedback, and voluntary peripheral temperature control in children.

Forty-eight children, aged 5 to 15 years, were tested for their ability to raise and lower their index finger temperature with self-hypnosis and/or biofeedback. Group A (self-hypnosis only) and group B (self-hypnosis with biofeedback) were children who had previous successful experience with self-hypnosis (eg, for the treatment of enuresis, pain, asthma, or obesity). Group C (biofeedback only) were children with no experience with hypnosis. All three groups showed significant success with warming and cooling. The range of warming for the three groups was 0 to 3.7 F, and for cooling, 0 to 7.3 F

Therapy with hypnosis and home video for speech disorders: A case report.

Speech difficulties in children can impair communication, social development, and academic success, often contributing to anxiety. This case report highlights a novel approach combining therapy with hypnosis, patient-recorded videos, and formative physician feedback to improve a child's speech clarity and confidence. In this report, a nine-year-old girl with longstanding articulation difficulties participated in hypnosis sessions and created cooking demonstration videos. These videos served as tools for self-assessment and for receiving targeted physician feedback on speech pacing and clarity.

Acupressure and hypnosis in arterial hypertension: a series of N-of-1 trials.

BACKGROUND: Acupressure and hypnosis are used by patients with arterial hypertension despite limited evidence supporting their efficacy. The aim of this N-of-1 series was to evaluate feasibility, individual patient responses to both interventions, to inform personalized treatment decisions, and to assess overall effects of interventions. METHODS: In a series of N-of-1 trials, we compared self-administered acupressure plus routine care (RC), hypnosis plus RC, and RC alone in patients with grade 1 or 2 hypertension. After a one-week run-in period with RC only, patients entered a six-week interv

Hypnosis and relaxation techniques in the management of temporomandibular disorders: a scoping review.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are common causes of orofacial pain, influenced by psychological and behavioural factors. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as hypnosis and relaxation techniques, have been proposed to modulate pain perception, reduce muscle hyperactivity, and improve coping. However, their role in TMD management remains unclear. We conducted a scoping review to synthesize the available evidence on the use of hypnosis and relaxation interventions in adolescents and adults with TMD. A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, and Goo

Effects of the Quinone Analog Ubiquinone-5 on Murine Mitochondria and Hypnosis.

BACKGROUND: A functional anesthetic target has long been suspected to reside within mitochondria, and disruption of bioenergetic capacity is believed to play a role in the anesthetic response. Unfortunately, the exact mechanism by which changes in mitochondrial target activity result in clinically relevant anesthetic endpoints remains unknown. Here, the authors leveraged knowledge of propofol toxicity to guide drug discovery and uncover a previously unknown pharmacologic target within mitochondria. They hypothesized that, like propofol, quinone analogs would interfere with electron transfer, c

Modulation of attentional bias by hypnosis: Disentangling the effect of induction and suggestion.

Hypnotic suggestions can modulate unintentional emotional processing. However, the specific contributions of hypnotic induction and suggestion - two central components of the hypnotic procedure - remain unclear. The present study aims to disentangle the effects of hypnotic induction and emotional numbing suggestion on the modulation of attentional bias in two experiments. In Experiment 1, high suggestible individuals (N = 34) performed an online emotional Stroop task in a two-by-two within-subject experimental design in which we crossed hypnotic induction and suggestion. Results show that both

Exploring women's experience of hypnosis in natural childbirth: A phenomenological study.

Hypnosis has increasingly been used in recent years to relieve labor pain, yet little is known about the emotional and psychological aspects of women's experiences with hypnosis during childbirth. This qualitative study aimed to explore women's lived experience of hypnosis in natural childbirth using Van Manen's phenomenological approach from 2016. Data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews with women, using open-ended questions about their experiences of hypnosis in natural childbirth. Participants were selected through purposive and snowball sampling, with initial recr

Hypnosis for Symptom Management in Adult Cancer Patients: What is the Evidence?

As a palliative care specialist and a hypnotherapist, I use therapeutic communication and conversational hypnosis daily in my patient - doctor relationship. Formal hypnotherapy sessions are integrated in my practice whenever patients are open or wish for such an approach in relation to a specific symptom, for better overall management of their disease burden and/or enhanced well-being. Although hypnosis has been used for centuries in medical practice and for thousands of years in healing practices in ancient cultures all over the world, the evidence remains scarce. Nevertheless, in the last 10

A vision to enhance self-regulation in children: The promise of pediatric hypnosis.

Pediatric hypnosis practices are a valuable tool for enhancing emotional self-regulation and promoting resilience. Hypnotically informed materials, toys, and language are simple ways to encourage relaxation and stress management. By learning hypnosis skills such as becoming imaginatively absorbed in imagery, "belly breathing," and using simple toys to promote muscle relaxation, children can access natural and novel ways to navigate life's challenges. An example of these hypnotically informed materials and skills training exercises can be found in Comfort Kits (developed by Dr. Karen Olness cir

[Hypnosis: a complementary tool for managing adolescents affected by anorexia nervosa].

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) mainly affects adolescent girls and requires specialized, multidisciplinary care. In Geneva, the HUG's AliNEA unit and the pediatric hypnosis consultation have been collaborating since 2021 to integrate hypnosis into the management of AN. Hypnosis is seen as a complementary tool to the Maudsley therapeutic model, but not a miracle solution. It needs to be adapted to each patient's individual needs and to the different phases of treatment : re-association with the body, reinforcement of motivation, exploration of interpersonal relationships and consolidation of progress. [Stress and nursing education: hypnosis to improve students' quality of life].

Nursing education is stressful and vulnerable. Students, like high-level athletes, are subject to performance objectives. In addition to the educational support systems, tools can be offered to students to prevent and treat the effects of stress in training. Hypnosis, practiced by a trained health professional, is a vector of change and a source of learning. It can help students reduce stress and regulate their emotions by activating their personal resources.

Prevalence of Different Approaches to Clinical Hypnosis: Bridging Research and Practice.

A recent survey conducted by the Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis Task Force for Efficacy Standards in Hypnosis Research found that clinicians reported using one or more of several different styles of hypnosis in their work. The most common of these was Ericksonian, used by over 2/3rds of clinicians, followed by hypnotic relaxation therapy and traditional hypnosis. Surprisingly, a little less than a 3rd of respondents indicated using the evidence-based practice of hypnotherapy. The present paper discusses these findings from the perspective of optimal survey methodology, examines

Hypnosis in the operating room: are anesthesiology teams interested and well-informed?

BACKGROUND: Hypnosis can be a beneficial complementary anesthesia technique for a variety of surgical procedures. Despite favorable scientific evidence, hypnosis is still rarely used in the operating room. Obstacles to implementation could be a lack of interest or training, misconceptions, as well as limited knowledge amongst anesthesiology teams. Hence, this study aimed to assess the interest, training, beliefs, and knowledge about hypnosis in the operating room staff. DESIGN: A questionnaire with 21-items, based on a prior survey, was set up on an online platform. The medical and nursing an

Hypnosis and suggestion as interventions for functional neurological disorder: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Functional neurological disorder (FND) involves the presence of neurological symptoms that cannot be explained by neurological disease. FND has long been linked to hypnosis and suggestion, both of which have been used as treatments. Given ongoing interest, this review examined evidence for the efficacy of hypnosis and suggestion as treatment interventions for FND. METHOD: A systematic search of bibliographic databases was conducted to identify group studies published over the last hundred years. No restrictions were placed on study design, language, or clinical setting. Two reviewe

Comparing Neural Correlates of Consciousness: From Psychedelics to Hypnosis and Meditation.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacological and nonpharmacological methods of inducing altered states of consciousness (ASCs) are becoming increasingly relevant in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. While comparisons between them are often drawn, to date no study has directly compared their neural correlates. METHODS: To address this knowledge gap, we directly compared 2 pharmacological methods (psilocybin 0.2 mg/kg orally [n = 23] and lysergic acid diethylamide [LSD] 100 μg orally [n = 25]) and 2 nonpharmacological methods (hypnosis [n = 30] and meditation [n = 29]) using resting-state functional conne
