In normal plasma, the ratio of the procoagulant activity of factor VIII (VIII(AHF)) to that of the von Willebrand factor activity (ristocetin cofactor, VIII(VWF)) or factor VIII antigen (VIII(AGN)) is approximately 1, but ratios > 1 (e.g., VIII(AHF) > VIII(VWF) or VIII(AGN)) may be observed in some patients with von Willebrand's disease and in the "late" posttransfusion plasmas of patients with this disorder. Many constituents of rat fur, urine and saliva were identified as being allergenic using crossed radio-immunoelectrophoresis with sera from 14 patients who had asthma and rhinitis on exposure to rats. Sera from C3H and C57BL mice infected with Mycobacterium lepraemurium (MLM) and from human leprosy patients were examined for antibodies against MLM by a crossed immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) technique. Tears were collected from patients with familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (FAP), orbital tumors, sarcoidosis, trigeminal and facial nerve palsy and corneal ulcer. The humoral and cellular immunity of 8 Salmonella carriers and 9 non-carriers was investigated and compared to findings in normal persons. We have examined the multimeric composition of factor VIII/von Willebrand factor in plasma and platelet lysates by means of sodium dodecyl sulfate agarose electrophoresis followed by staining with (125)I-labeled affinity-purified antibody. In normal plasma and platelet lysates, factor VIII/von Willebrand factor displayed 10 distinct multimers that ranged in apparent molecular weight from 0.86 to 9.9 x 10(6).
