Factors determining immunological response to vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis virus in older individuals.

We performed a cross-sectional study including 533 individuals (median age 61) from the highly TBE endemic Åland Islands in the archipelago between Sweden and Finland. Blood samples, questionnaires and vaccination records were obtained from all study participants. The aim was to investigate if there was any association between TBEV antibody titer and 12 health-related factors. Measurement of TBEV IgG antibodies was performed using two commercial ELISA assays (Enzygnost and Immunozym), and a third in-house rapid fluorescent focus inhibition test was used to measure TBEV neutralizing antibodies.

Risk factors and outcome of expanded-criteria donor kidney transplants in patients with low immunological risk.

QUESTIONS UNDER STUDY: The aim of this study was to evaluate risk factors and outcome of expanded-criteria donor (ECD) kidney transplants in patients with low immunological risk. METHODS: We evaluated graft survival and graft function in 265 recipients with low immunological risk defined as the absence of pretransplant donor-specific HLA antibodies. RESULTS: A total of 112 (42%) kidneys derived from ECD and 153 (58%) from standard-criteria donors (SCDs). Overall, in a multivariate Cox regression, ECD status was the only significant risk factor for graft failure (hazard ratio [HR] 2.31, 95% c

Immunological effects of intermediate purity clotting factor concentrates: failure to affect lymphocyte activation in vivo.

Concern has been expressed that intermediate purity clotting factor concentrates may cause immunological abnormalities in haemophilic patients, distinct from those related to HIV infection. Early reports of lymphocyte dysfunction in anti-HIV seronegative haemophiliacs pointed to activation of their lymphocytes; a potential cause of CD4+ ve lymphocyte decline in anti-HIV seropositive patients. Recent reports have suggested that the use of high purity FVIII concentrates might retard the rate of decline in CD4+ ve lymphocytes in haemophiliacs infected with the HIV virus. Expression of markers of

Clinical and immunological factors associated with gastrointestinal involvement in common variable immunodeficiency: a real-world study.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) involvement is a common and clinically significant manifestation of common variable immunodeficiency (CVID); however, its relationship with immunological parameters remains incompletely understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the association between GI involvement and immunological markers, particularly serum immunoglobulin levels and B-cell subsets, and to assess their discriminative performance. METHODS: In this single-center retrospective study, 109 adult patients with CVID were included and categorized based on GI involvement. Clinical, endos

Remyelination in multiple sclerosis, along with its immunology and association with gut dysbiosis, lifestyle, and environmental factors.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that damages the myelin sheath around the axons of the central nervous system. While there are periods of inflammation and remyelination in MS, the latter can sometimes be insufficient and lead to the formation of lesions in the brain and spinal cord. Environmental factors such as vitamin D deficiency, viral or bacterial infections, tobacco smoking, and anxiety have been shown to play a role in the development of MS. Dysbiosis, where the composition of the microbiome changes, may also be involved in the pathogenesis of MS by affecting t

Systemic cytokines, chemokines and growth factors reveal specific and shared immunological characteristics in infectious cardiomyopathies.

Heart disease is a major cause of death worldwide. Chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy (CCC) caused by infection with Trypanosoma cruzi leading to high mortality in adults, and rheumatic heart disease (RHD), resulting from infection by Streptococcus pyogenes affecting mainly children and young adults, are amongst the deadliest heart diseases in low-middle income countries. Despite distinct etiology, the pathology associated with both diseases is a consequence of inflammation. Here we compare systemic immune profile in patients with these cardiopathies, to identify particular and common characteristi

Immunological factors, but not clinical features, predict visceral leishmaniasis relapse in patients co-infected with HIV.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has emerged as a clinically important opportunistic infection in HIV patients, as VL/HIV co-infected patients suffer from frequent VL relapse. Here, we follow cohorts of VL patients with or without HIV in Ethiopia. By the end of the study, 78.1% of VL/HIV-but none of the VL patients-experience VL relapse. Despite a clinically defined cure, VL/HIV patients maintain higher parasite loads, lower BMI, hepatosplenomegaly, and pancytopenia. We identify three immunological markers associated with VL relapse in VL/HIV patients: (1) failure to restore antigen-specific produc

Immunological and epidemiological factors affecting candidiasis in HIV patients beginning antiretroviral therapy in an Asian clinic.

OBJECTIVES: Oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC) is common in HIV patients beginning antiretroviral therapy (ART). Here we address the response to ART, and the roles of poor oral hygiene and defects in local innate immunity with a focus on salivary β-defensins, as they are implicated in control of candidiasis but have not been investigated in this context. DESIGN: ART naïve HIV-infected adults (n=82) with <200 CD4+ T-cells/mm3 attending clinics at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta, were examined at the commencement of ART, and 73 were re-examined after 3 months. OPC was detected by clinical exa

Exposure to mercury and aluminum in early life: developmental vulnerability as a modifying factor in neurologic and immunologic effects.

Currently, ethylmercury (EtHg) and adjuvant-Al are the dominating interventional exposures encountered by fetuses, newborns, and infants due to immunization with Thimerosal-containing vaccines (TCVs). Despite their long use as active agents of medicines and fungicides, the safety levels of these substances have never been determined, either for animals or for adult humans—much less for fetuses, newborns, infants, and children. I reviewed the literature for papers reporting on outcomes associated with (a) multiple exposures and metabolism of EtHg and Al during early life; (b) physiological and

TNF-α promoter polymorphism: a factor contributing to the different immunological and clinical phenotypes in Japanese encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: More than three billion populations are living under the threat of Japanese encephalitis in South East Asian (SEA) countries including India. The pathogenesis of this disease is not clearly understood and is probably attributed to genomic variations in viral strains as well as the host genetic makeup. The present study is to determine the role of polymorphism of TNF-alpha promoter regions at positions -238G/A, -308G/A, -857C/T and -863C/A in the severity of Japanese encephalitis patients. METHODS: Total of 142 patients including 66 encephalitis case (IgM/RT-PCR positive), 16 fever

Immunological characterization of the complement regulator factor H-binding CRASP and Erp proteins of Borrelia burgdorferi.

Complement activation plays an important role in the elimination of invading microorganisms. Borrelia (B.) burgdorferi sensu lato the etiological agent of Lyme borreliosis, can resist complement-mediated killing. The mechanism of complement resistance of B. burgdorferi sensu stricto apparently depends on the expression of several outer surface proteins described as CRASPs (complement regulator-acquiring surface proteins). These borrelial surface proteins are able to bind components of the complement regulatory system, factor H and/or factor H-like protein 1 (FHL-1), two crucial fluid-phase neg

Structural and immunological comparison of insulin-like growth factor binding proteins of cerebrospinal and amniotic fluids.

The insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) found in plasma and a variety of other body fluids are complexed to specific binding proteins (BPs). The cDNA for a 25K IGF-BP was recently cloned and sequenced, and the primary structure of the BP deduced. This BP is found in amniotic fluid, decidual tissues, conditioned medium from HepG2 human hepatoma cells, and fetal plasma. An additional small IGF-BP has been identified in human cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). We now demonstrate that the IGF-BP found in CSF is structurally and immunologically distinct from that found in HepG2 conditioned medium. While the

Immunologic differentiation of classic hemophilia (factor 8 deficiency) and von Willebrand's dissase, with observations on combined deficiencies of antihemophilic factor and proaccelerin (factor V) and on an acquired circulating anticoagulant against antihemophilic factor.

Heterologous antiserum was prepared in rabbits against highly purified human antihemophilic factor (AHF, factor VIII). This antiserum blocked the clot-promoting properties of AHF and, when suitably absorbed, formed a single precipitin line against AHF upon immunoelectrophoresis. Material antigenically similar to normal AHF was detected in normal amounts in plasma concentrates in each of 22 patients with classic hemophilia, in a patient with an acquired circulating anticoagulant against AHF, and in a patient with deficiencies both of AHF and proaccelerin (factor V). AHF-like antigen was present

Use of thymic grafts or thymic factors to augment immunologic recovery after bone marrow transplantation: brief report with 2 to 12 years' follow-up.

Thymus tissue implants, thymic epithelial cells obtained from third party donors sharing one HLA-A and -B locus with the recipient, or the thymic hormones thymosin fraction 5 and thymopentin were given to recipients of HLA-identical sibling bone marrow to prevent chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and accelerate immunologic reconstitution. The clinical courses of 17 patients receiving thymus tissue and 18 patients receiving thymic hormones were reported initially 5 years ago and showed no difference in the incidence of chronic GVHD or immunologic recovery from those of concurrent or hist

Remission from insulin dependence induced by continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) in type I, newly diagnosed diabetics: role of some hormonal and immunologic factors.

Optimal and early control of recent onset, type I diabetes by intensive insulin therapy has been reported to allow insulin withdrawal in about two thirds of subjects treated. We used continuous s.c. insulin infusion (CSII) in the attempt to induce a temporary remission of insulin dependence in 18 newly diagnosed young adult diabetics. After 10 days of optimized glycometabolic control, insulin infusion was stopped and patients were switched to glibenclamide (15 mg/die) plus metformin (1 g/die). Diabetics were considered in remission of insulin dependence when their metabolic control fulfilled t
