Acute effects of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) on behavioral measures of impulsivity: alone and in combination with alcohol.

The use of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) has frequently been associated with increased levels of impulsivity during abstinence. The effects of MDMA on measures of impulsivity, however, have not yet been studied during intoxication. The present study was designed to assess the acute effects of MDMA and alcohol, alone and in combination, on behavioral measures of impulsivity and risk-taking behavior. A total of 18 recreational users of MDMA entered a double-blind placebo-controlled six-way crossover study. The treatments consisted of MDMA 0, 75, and 100 mg with and without alcohol. Al

Stress coping strategy in Japanese patients with eating disorders: relationship with bulimic and impulsive behaviors.

Although maladaptive coping strategies in eating disorder patients have been reported, the relationship between impulsivity and coping strategy has not previously been studied. Subjects consisted of 43 patients with anorexia nervosa restricting type (AN-R), 42 patients with anorexia nervosa binge eating/purging type (AN-BP), 71 patients with bulimia nervosa purging type (BN), and 97 controls. The Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations was used to evaluate coping strategies. Only AN-BP patients had a significantly lower task oriented-coping score than controls, and AN-R and BN patient groups

Reward deficiency syndrome: a biogenetic model for the diagnosis and treatment of impulsive, addictive, and compulsive behaviors.

The dopaminergic system, and in particular the dopamine D2 receptor, has been implicated in reward mechanisms. The net effect of neurotransmitter interaction at the mesolimbic brain region induces "reward" when dopamine (DA) is released from the neuron at the nucleus accumbens and interacts with a dopamine D2 receptor. "The reward cascade" involves the release of serotonin, which in turn at the hypothalmus stimulates enkephalin, which in turn inhibits GABA at the substania nigra, which in turn fine tunes the amount of DA released at the nucleus accumbens or "reward site." It is well known that

Validation of the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale and Clinical Correlates of its Scores in French-Speaking Patients Starting a Residential Detoxification Program.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a multifaceted construct that plays a prominent role in substance use disorder (SUD). The UPPS-P model distinguishes five impulsivity components (positive urgency, negative urgency, lack of perseverance, lack of premeditation, and sensation seeking). This study aimed to explore the structure of the UPPS-P in patients hospitalized for SUDs and to investigate the relationship between the dimensions of impulsivity and clinical variables. METHOD: Inpatients of a residential detoxification service (n = 125) were recruited. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed, an

Intrauterine growth restriction increases impulsive behavior and is associated with altered dopamine transmission in both medial prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortex in female rats.

Recent studies have implicated a role for impulsivity in the altered eating behaviors and the increased risk for obesity consistently associated with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Changes in dopamine transmission within prefrontal areas are believed to contribute to these adverse outcomes. Here we investigated the impulsive behavior toward a delayed reward and evaluated dopamine levels and its receptors in the medial prefrontal (mPFC) and orbitofrontal (OFC) cortex of female adult rats exposed to IUGR. From day 10 of pregnancy and until birth, Sprague-Dawley dams received either an a

A tube-restriction test: A candidate impulsivity-related assay based on nose-poke behavior dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a multidimensional endophenotype, yet current rodent assays require prolonged training, dietary restriction, or yield binary outcomes. NEW METHOD: We developed the tube-restriction test (TRT) as a complementary assay to exploit innate approach-avoidance conflict. Spontaneous nose-poke behavior was video-recorded and analyzed via an unsupervised principal component analysis-Gaussian mixture model pipeline. The core metric IBTP (impulsive burst time percentage) indexes the propensity for temporally clustered nose-poke bursts, complemented by ST-CV (state-transition co

Exploring associations of impulsivity with substance use, polysubstance use, and gambling behaviors through latent profiles.

Impulsivity is the tendency to act hastily in reaction to internal and external cues without consideration of all potential outcomes. Limited research has used a person-centered approach to explore patterns of impulsivity and risky behavior involvement, but not how different dimensions of impulsivity relate to multiple risk behaviors within the same individuals. The present study aimed to identify latent groups based on five self-report impulsivity measures and to assess differences in latent profiles as related to alcohol use and problems, drug use, gambling, and polysubstance use. Participan

Associations between Sleep Disorders and Impulsive-Compulsive Behaviors in Parkinson's Disease: A Prospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and probable rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (pRBD), respectively, with impulsive-compulsive behaviors (ICBs) over a 5-year follow-up in patients with early Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: The Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative is a multicenter cohort study based on an ongoing and open-ended registry. Longitudinal associations of sleep disorders with ICB over 5-year follow-up visits were estimated using generalized linear mixed-effects models among PD participants. RESULTS: A total of 825 PD pa

Pramipexole restores behavioral inhibition in highly impulsive rats through a paradoxical modulation of frontostriatal networks.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs), a wide spectrum of maladaptive behaviors which includes pathological gambling, hypersexuality and compulsive buying, have been recently suggested to be triggered or aggravated by treatments with dopamine D2/3 receptor agonists, such as pramipexole (PPX). Despite evidence showing that impulsivity is associated with functional alterations in corticostriatal networks, the neural basis of the exacerbation of impulsivity by PPX has not been elucidated. Here we used a hotspot analysis to assess the functional recruitment of several corticostriatal structures by PPX

The effects of childhood maltreatment on adolescent non-suicidal self-injury behavior: mediating role of impulsivity.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) severely challenges mental health in adolescents. Childhood maltreatment experience acts as high-risk factor for adolescents to engage in NSSI behaviors. On the other hand, impulsivity or loss of control sets the threshold for NSSI execution. Here we examined the effects of childhood maltreatment on adolescent NSSI-related clinical outcomes and the potential role of impulsivity. METHODS: We assessed the clinical data of 160 hospitalized NSSI adolescents and recruited 64 age-matched healthy subjects as a control group. The clinical symptoms of NSSI a

Divergent risky decision-making and impulsivity behaviors in Lewis rat substrains with low genetic difference.

Substance use disorder (SUD) is associated with a cluster of cognitive disturbances that engender vulnerability to ongoing drug seeking and relapse. Two of these endophenotypes-risky decision-making and impulsivity-are amplified in individuals with SUD and are augmented by repeated exposure to illicit drugs. Identifying genetic factors underlying variability in these behavioral patterns is critical for early identification, prevention, and treatment of SUD-vulnerable individuals. Here, we compared risky decision-making and different facets of impulsivity between two fully inbred substrains of

Emotional self-regulation, impulsivity, 5-HTTLPR and tobacco use behavior among psychiatric inpatients.

BACKGROUND: While the serotonin transporter (SLC6A4) gene, 5-HTTLPR, interacts with the social environment to influence both emotional self-regulation and smoking behavior, less is known about interactions between emotional self-regulation and 5-HTTLPR or their joint influence on tobacco use. Here, we examined such interactions among psychiatric inpatients, the population with the highest rates of smoking. METHODS: Participants (506 adults) were psychiatric inpatients at The Menninger Clinic in Houston TX between 2012 and 16. Most were white (89%), male (55%), with a mean age of 32.3 years. P

Impulsivity mediates the impact of early life adversity on high risk behaviors among Tunisian adolescents.

Adverse childhood experience (ACE) has become an alarming phenomenon exposing youth at a great risk of developing mental health issues. Several studies have examined the mechanism by which ACE affects adolescent's engagement in risky behaviors. However, little is known about these associations in the Tunisian/African context. We investigated the role of impulsivity in the link between ACE and health risk behaviors among schooled adolescents in Tunisia. We performed a cross sectional study among 1940 schooled adolescents in the city of Mahdia (Tunisia) from January to February 2020. To measure

Heritable variation in locomotion, reward sensitivity and impulsive behaviors in a genetically diverse inbred mouse panel.

Drugs of abuse, including alcohol and stimulants like cocaine, produce effects that are subject to individual variability, and genetic variation accounts for at least a portion of those differences. Notably, research in both animal models and human subjects point toward reward sensitivity and impulsivity as being trait characteristics that predict relatively greater positive subjective responses to stimulant drugs. Here we describe use of the eight collaborative cross (CC) founder strains and 38 (reversal learning) or 10 (all other tests) CC strains to examine the heritability of reward sensit

Risky Sexual Behavior among Arrested Adolescent Males: The Role of Future Expectations and Impulse Control.

The current study evaluates two predictors of adolescent sexual risk-taking, specifically whether impulse control or future expectations predict condom use and casual sex. We examine whether risky sex occurs among youth who tend to act without thinking about the future, or instead, youth who report low future expectations. We consider these relations longitudinally among a sample of sexually active justice-involved adolescent males (N = 752, M age = 15.58) a group at heightened risk for sexual risk-taking. We found that optimistic expectations for the future predict a higher likelihood of enga

The elevated gradient of aversion: a new apparatus to study the rat behavior dimensions of anxiety, fear, and impulsivity.

Few behavioral tests allow measuring several characteristics and most require training, complex analyses, and/or are time-consuming. We present an apparatus based on rat exploratory behavior. Composed of three different environments, it allows the assessment of more than one behavioral characteristic in a short 3-min session. Factorial analyses have defined three behavioral dimensions, which we named Exploration, Impulsivity, and Self-protection. Behaviors composing the Exploration factor were increased by chlordiazepoxide and apomorphine and decreased by pentylenetetrazole. Behaviors composin

Obtaining quality data using behavioral measures of impulsivity in gambling research with Amazon's Mechanical Turk.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To date, no research has examined the viability of using behavioral tasks typical of cognitive and neuropsychology within addiction populations through online recruitment methods. Therefore, we examined the reliability and validity of three behavioral tasks of impulsivity common in addiction research in a sample of individuals with a current or past history of problem gambling recruited online. METHODS: Using a two-stage recruitment process, a final sample of 110 participants with a history of problem or disordered gambling were recruited through MTurk and completed self-

Dark personality traits and impulsivity among adolescents: Differential links to problem behaviors and family relations.

Research on how dark personality traits develop and relate to risky behaviors and family relations during adolescence is scarce. This study used a person-oriented approach to examine (a) whether distinct groups of adolescents could be identified based on their developmental profiles of callous-unemotional (CU), grandiose manipulative (GM), and dysfunctional impulsivity (DI) traits and (b) whether these groups differ in their problem behaviors and parent-adolescent relationship quality. Latent class growth analyses on 4-wave data of 1,131 Dutch adolescents revealed 3 personality profiles: (1) a

Acute effects of methylphenidate on impulsivity and attentional behavior among adolescents comorbid for ADHD and conduct disorder.

Adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Conduct Disorder (CD) experience deficits in neuropsychological measures of attention, inhibition, and reward processes. Methylphenidate treatment for ADHD and CD has acute effects on these processes. Some of these same aspects of performance are separately described in the Behavioral Model of Impulsivity, which uses a modified approach to measurement. This study characterized the acute effects of methylphenidate attention, initiation, inhibition, and reward processes described in this model of impulsivity. Thirty-one adolesc

REM sleep behavior disorder: association with motor complications and impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical phenotypes such as old age, longer disease duration, motor disability, akineto-rigid type, dementia and hallucinations are known to be associated with REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the relationship between motor fluctuations/impulse control and related behaviors (ICRB) and RBD is not clear. We designed this study to elucidate the clinical manifestations associated with RBD to determine the implications of RBD in PD. DESIGN: In a cross-sectional study, a total of 994 patients with PD were interviewed to determine the presence of RBD
