The lasting impact of incarceration: A qualitative thematic analysis of mental health in formerly incarcerated Black men.

Black men in the United States face high incarceration rates and formerly incarcerated Black men (FIBM) have worse mental health outcomes than Black men who have never been incarcerated. Incarceration is a driver of population health inequities and as such, its role in contributing to negative mental health outcomes must be examined within FIBM's broader social, environmental, and historical context. The purpose of this study was to examine FIBM's perceptions of mental health broadly, and in relation to their lived experiences with incarceration. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conduc

Prevalence Rates and Evolution of Psychiatric Disorders Among Incarcerated Youths in Comparison With Non-incarcerated Youths.

Background: Our main objective was to provide estimates of the prevalence rates of psychiatric disorders and comorbidities among youths in a juvenile detention center in Geneva, Switzerland. We also aimed to investigate potential positive effects of intensive psychotherapeutic and educational services this center provides. Finally, we examined psychiatric care prior to and after custody as well as the evolution of the youths' mental health during detention. Methods: We conducted a longitudinal study including a group of incarcerated (n = 86) and a group of non-incarcerated (n = 169) youths (12

Phosphatidylethanol Levels Among Incarcerated Women: The Influence of Pre-incarceration Alcohol Consumption and Length of Abstinence.

BACKGROUND: Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is a direct biomarker for alcohol that is formed shortly after alcohol use and may remain detectable in blood for weeks after alcohol consumption. There is little research on alcohol use factors that influence PEth elimination, especially among women. METHODS: Data were collected from 116 alcohol use-disordered women who were recently incarcerated. We used a 2-part model with logistic and linear components to examine whether alcohol consumption in the 2 weeks prior to incarceration and days since last alcoholic drink (operationalized as abstinence days p

Small intestinal incarceration caused by external herniation can be diagnosed clinically in cattle, but laparotomy is required to confirm internal incarceration.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical, laboratory and ultrasonographic findings, treatment, and outcome of cattle with small intestinal incarceration (SII) through internal and external hernias. METHODS: The medical records of 85 cattle with SII admitted between January 1, 1987, and December 31, 2019, were retrospectively reviewed. The long-term outcome was determined 2 years after discharge. RESULTS: 85 cattle had herniation of the small intestine through congenital or acquired openings in mesentery or omentum (internal herniation; n = 60) or the abdominal wall (external herniation; 25). The

Incarceration of epigastric hernia in children: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Paediatric epigastric hernias are usually superficial fascial defects in the linea alba containing extra-peritoneal fat only. We aimed to determine the frequency of incarceration of epigastric hernias in children and the incidence of full thickness defects. METHODS: A systematic review was performed following PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO: CRD42024622980). A literature search was undertaken using sources from the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Grey literature sources, references of included studies, all in English language only, using the

Too many for too long: physicians dismantling mass incarceration.

"If you are like the many people who approach us and ask, 'How do we end [mass incarceration]?', keep reading. You've come to the right place." So closes the introduction to Dismantling Mass Incarceration: A Handbook for Change, a collection of abolitionist and reformist pieces edited by Premal Dharia, James Forman Jr., and Maria Hawilo. This book review provides an overview of the main themes regarding the six aspects of the criminal legal system: police, prosecutors, public defenders, judges, prisons, and post-release. We highlight examples of the theoretical and practical takeaways from the

Relational Therapy in Post-Incarceration Reentry: A Scoping Review.

An estimated 600,000 individuals returning home after incarceration each year face significant challenges that constrain their reentry and reintegration into society. A scoping review was conducted on how relational therapy is discussed in the literature on post-incarceration. Utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis, 19 out of 304 articles met the inclusion criteria for full review. Our findings highlight the limited empirical evidence on relational therapy interventions for post-incarceration. The review also emphasizes that there is a lack of evidence

Plea Bargains as Drivers of Incarceration-Related Health Outcomes.

The discipline of public health has begun to recognize the structural inequities of the carceral system as drivers of poor individual and population health. The number of people incarcerated and the length of their incarceration determine the scope and gravity of their exposure to these individual and public health effects. Plea bargains all but guarantee a period of incarceration, often for many years, because prosecutors have significant bargaining power against defendants who often do not fully understand their rights or the likelihood of receiving the sentences that prosecutors would be se

Maternal health and incarceration: advancing pregnancy justice through research.

This paper will review the state of the science on maternal health and incarceration. We will provide a historical context on women, pregnancy, and mothers as it relates to mass incarceration, considering both structural racism and reproductive justice. We will discuss existing research that documents care, treatment, and outcomes of individuals who are incarcerated while pregnant or postpartum in the United States. We will discuss the implications of carceral exposure on birthing people and their families. By synthesizing current research and relevant policies, we will identify gaps that will

Incarceration and Psychiatric Emergency Department Visits Among Black Americans.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points The spillover effects of jail and prison incarceration extend to acute psychiatric emergencies in Black communities. State-level drug reform policies and policies that reduce labor market and housing discrimination for former inmates may have salutary mental health benefits for the broader community. CONTEXT: The justice system incarcerates nearly 2.3 million individuals in the United States. Black Americans comprise 40% of those incarcerated despite representing less than 15% of the population. Theoretical work posits that mass incarceration can erode social capital

Incarceration Postpartum: Is There a Right to Prison Nurseries?

Rising rates of female incarceration within the United States are incompatible with the lack of federal standards outlining the rights of incarcerated mothers and their children. A robust body of evidence demonstrates that prison nurseries, programmes designed for mothers to keep their infants under their care during detainment or incarceration, provide essential and beneficial care that could not otherwise be achieved within the current carceral infrastructure. These benefits include facilitation of breastfeeding, bonding during a critical period of child development, and decreased recidivism

Examining inequities associated with incarceration among breast cancer patients.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer treatment patterns and quality of care among patients experiencing incarceration are underexplored. This study examined associations between incarceration and breast cancer disease and treatment characteristics. METHODS: This retrospective analysis was conducted at a tertiary center in the Southeastern United States that serves as the state's safety-net hospital and primary referral site for the state's prisons. All patients ≥18 years diagnosed with breast cancer between 4/14/2014-12/30/2020 were included. Incarceration status was determined through electronic heal

Incarceration of Bochdalek hernia in an adult - case report.

This paper presents the case of a 32-year-old female patient with acute colon incarceration in the thoracic cavity due to Bochdalek hernia. An asymptomatic right Bochdalek hernia was also discovered, which is a rare finding. The patient underwent laparotomy with reposition of the incarcerated organs and primary closure of the left-sided defect. The stenotic portion of the originally incarcerated colon was resected one year later due to the symptoms of chronic bowel problems. At present, 18 months from the first surgery, the patient's clinical condition remains good with a positive clinical res
