Research Trends of Breastfeeding and Infant Formula in Relation to Neurological Disorders: A Bibliometric Mapping Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neurological disorders (NDs) represent the leading cause of disability and the second most significant contributor to global mortality. Exclusive breastfeeding supports early neural development and may provide protective effects against NDs. This study aimed to examine the foundational concepts and intellectual framework of the existing literature concerning breastfeeding in the context of NDs. METHODS: Literature published from 1956 to 2025 was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. A total of 252 English-language articles were analyzed using VOSviewer (v1.6.20) and R

The flavor quality differences of infant formula: The synergistic effects of nutritional components and chemical reactions.

This study elucidates the interplay between nutritional composition and chemical reactions governing off-flavor formation in infant formula powder (IF). Sample Z, which is an IF of a raw bovine milk base with vegetable lipids (1,3-diolein-2-palmitin [OPO], sunflower, and flaxseed oils), showed accelerated oxidation (the oxidation products are twice those of sample J), generating propanal, pentanal, and hexanal, leading to metallic, fishy, and algae-like odors. Unsaturated lipids also promoted particle aggregation, vitamin degradation, and pungent aldehydes or ketones (2,4-octadienal, 1-octen-3

Ultra-High Temperature Treatment of Liquid Infant Formula, Systemic Immunity, and Kidney Development in Preterm Neonates.

SCOPE: Ready-to-feed liquid infant formulas (IFs) are increasingly being used for newborn preterm infants when human milk is unavailable. However, sterilization of liquid IFs by ultra-high temperature (UHT) introduces Maillard reaction products (MRPs) that may negatively affect systemic immune and kidney development. METHODS AND RESULTS: UHT-treated IF without and with prolonged storage (SUHT) are tested against pasteurized IF (PAST) in newborn preterm pigs as a model for preterm infants. After 5 days, blood leukocytes, markers of systemic immunity and inflammation, kidney structure and funct

Type of infant formula increases early weight gain and impacts energy balance: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Millions of infants are fed breast milk substitutes, and the type of infant formula can impact weight gain patterns. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a randomized controlled trial to determine the direct impact of 2 types of infant formula (cow milk formula, CMF; extensively protein hydrolyzed formula, EHF) on growth and energy balance. DESIGN: A racially diverse group of formula-fed infants (n = 113) were randomly assigned to either CMF or EHF from the age of 0.75 to 12.5 mo. At each monthly visit, anthropometric measures were obtained to determine growth z scores and weight gain velocit

Detection of Cronobacter species in powdered infant formula using immunoliposome-based immunomagnetic concentration and separation assay.

Cronobacter species are foodborne pathogens that can affect the human central nervous system. Survivors of Cronobacter infections often suffer from severe neurological impairments, including hydrocephalus, quadriplegia, and developmental delays in all ages, especially in infants and the immunocompromised. Moreover, Cronobacter species pose a high risk in powdered infant formula (PIF) because PIF is a major source of nutrition for infants worldwide. To develop a rapid and sensitive detection method for Cronobacter species in PIF, immunoliposomes and immunomagnetic nanoparticles were synthesized

Partially hydrolyzed 100% whey protein infant formula and reduced risk of atopic dermatitis: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: A reduced risk of atopic dermatitis (AD) among healthy infants who received 100% whey protein partially hydrolyzed formula (PHF-W) compared with intact protein cow's milk formula (CMF), has been reported in several studies. To validate these observations and estimate the magnitude of this potential association with greater statistical precision, we conducted a meta-analysis of clinical trial and intervention studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 18 articles representing 12 independent study populations met our inclusion criteria. RESULTS: A statistically significant 44% (summ

Infant formula promotes bone growth in neonatal piglets by enhancing osteoblastogenesis through bone morphogenic protein signaling.

Relatively few studies have examined the effects of formula feeding relative to breast-feeding on bone in the neonate. Using peripheral quantitative CT scan and histomorphometric analysis, we demonstrated that neonatal piglets fed with soy-based formula (SF) and cow milk-based formula (MF) for 21 or 35 d had greater bone mineral density and content than breast-fed piglets (BF) (P < 0.05). Osteoblast numbers and bone formation rate at postnatal d 35 were greater in SF compared with other groups (P < 0.05), whereas osteoclast numbers were lower in both MF and SF groups than in the BF group (P <

A preterm infant with secondary carnitine deficiency due to MCT formula--effective treatment of L-carnitine.

We report a preterm infant who was prescribed an MCT formula and subsequently developed carnitine deficiency with liver dysfunction and an elevation of serum CK level. A male infant who had been born at 24 weeks' gestation with birth weight 799 g, was fed with an MCT formula containing 76.8% of all kinds of lipids, because of his steatorrhea after the 30th day. On the 100th day, he was noted hepatomegaly and elevation of serum levels of AST, ALT and CK. The needle biopsy of the liver indicated the existence of the liver damage. He showed low serum carnitine with high urinary loss of acylcarnit

Food intake and growth of infants between six and twenty-six weeks of age on breast milk, cow's milk formula, or soy formula.

In 59 normal infants attending well-baby clinics, food consumption was registered until 26 and growth until 52 weeks of age. They were either breast-fed or formula-fed with a cow's milk product or a soy protein product. The average consumption of breastmilk was 746, 796, 722 ans 689 g/day at 6, 14, 22 and 26 weeks respectively. Bottle-fed infants received larger volumes, and at 6 and 14 weeks were the calculated total energy intakes significantly higher than in breast-fed infants. No differences were seen between the feeding groups with respect to length and the sum of four skin folds. The soy

Restoration of gut microbiota with a specific synbiotic-containing infant formula in healthy Chinese infants born by cesarean section.

BACKGROUND: Birth by cesarean section (C-section) is associated with a delayed colonization of bifidobacteria and Bacteroidota species with potential negative health consequences. Previously, an infant formula with a synbiotic mixture of short-chain galacto-oligosaccharides and long-chain fructo-oligosaccharides (scGOS/lcFOS [9:1]) and Bifidobacterium breve M-16V was found to restore the timely colonization of bifidobacteria in C-section born infants. In this study, we investigated the effect of this synbiotic mixture on gut microbiota development in C-section and vaginally-born infants partic

Neurodevelopmental Outcomes of Extremely Preterm Infants Fed Donor Milk or Preterm Infant Formula: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Maternal milk feeding of extremely preterm infants during the birth hospitalization has been associated with better neurodevelopmental outcomes compared with preterm formula. For infants receiving no or minimal maternal milk, it is unknown whether donor human milk conveys similar neurodevelopmental advantages vs preterm formula. OBJECTIVE: To determine if nutrient-fortified, pasteurized donor human milk improves neurodevelopmental outcomes at 22 to 26 months' corrected age compared with preterm infant formula among extremely preterm infants who received minimal maternal milk. The clinical effect of a new infant formula in term infants with constipation: a double-blind, randomized cross-over trial.

BACKGROUND: Nutrilon Omneo (new formula; NF) contains high concentration of sn-2 palmitic acid, a mixture of prebiotic oligosaccharides and partially hydrolyzed whey protein. It is hypothesized that NF positively affects stool characteristics in constipated infants. METHODS: Thirty-eight constipated infants, aged 3-20 weeks, were included and randomized to NF (n = 20) or a standard formula (SF; n = 18) in period 1 and crossed-over after 3 weeks to treatment period 2. Constipation was defined by at least one of the following symptoms: 1) defecation frequency < 3/week; 2) painful defecation; 3)

Emerging microbial risks: Cronobacter sakazakii in powdered infant formula for infants under six months of age in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Powdered infant formula is issued in instances where breastfeeding is not possible or inadequate as a substitute, but it is not a sterile product and is sometimes a vehicle for certain pathogens like Cronobacter sakazakii with neonatal deaths reported to occur in 40–80% of cases. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the microbial quality and safety of powdered infant formula for infants below six months of age using indicator organisms, and foodborne pathogens. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 106 Powdered Infant formula milk samples to assess the micr

Postprandial metabolic response of breast-fed infants and infants fed lactose-free vs regular infant formula: A randomized controlled trial.

Lactose intolerance is a major concern driving the growth of lactose-free foods including lactose-free infant formula. It is unknown what the metabolic consequence is of consumption of a formula where lactose has been replaced with corn syrup solids (CSS). Here, a randomized double-blinded intervention study was conducted where exclusively formula-fed infants were fed formula containing either lactose or CSS-based infant formula and compared with an equal number of exclusively breast-fed infants. Plasma metabolites and insulin were measured at baseline, 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 min after feeding

LC-Orbitrap-MS/MS Analysis of Chosen Glycation Products in Infant Formulas.

When breastfeeding is not possible, infant formulas may be used instead of human milk. However, harmful advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) may be formed during thermal processing of infant formulas. The exposure to AGEs at such an early age can lead to chronic diseases in the future. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a sensitive method to determine the content of AGEs in infant formulas. Twenty commercial infant formulas (initial and follow-on) in liquid and powder form were investigated using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) with a multistep sam
