The effects of substance use during gestation on birth outcome, infant and maternal health.

This study examines the relationship of substance use to birth outcome, infant, and maternal health in a large, nationally representative sample. Multiple regression analyses, accommodating the nature of the survey data using the SUDAAN software package, indicated that drinking and smoking independently and/or interactively with depression account for poor health and serious medical conditions among pregnant women as well as negative birth outcomes or adverse health consequences in those infants who are live births. In addition, African American women and their infants are more likely than tho

'Neither obscure nor mysterious'--infant mortality and the Kimberley Board of Health, 1898-1977.

Annual reports of the Kimberley Board of Health, established in 1883, provide rich insight into public health discourse on infant mortality. Commentaries on the determinants of infant mortality, especially prior to 1950, largely focus on poverty and interracial disparities, issues relevant to current health policy.

Impact on maternal mental health on infants development: A narrative review.

Mental health problems among expectant mothers and new mothers are important yet neglected health problems that significantly raise maternal and child morbidity and death in India. The mental health and well-being of parents have an impact on the growth and development of their children. Maternal depression during pregnancy and after delivery reduces the chance that a child survives since it signals that the baby will grow slowly and have a higher chance of developing diarrhea. More specifically, depression, one of the most common causes of disease-related limitation in women, not only impacts

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in the Perinatal Health of Infants Conceived by ART.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although racial and ethnic disparities in adverse birth outcomes have been well documented, it is unknown whether such disparities diminish in women who use medically assisted reproduction (MAR). We examined differences in the association between maternal race and ethnicity and adverse birth outcomes among women who conceived spontaneously and those who used MAR, including assisted reproduction technology (ART), eg, in-vitro fertilization, and also non-ART MAR, eg, fertility drugs. METHODS: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study using data on all

Combating the Hidden Health Disparity of Kernicterus in Black Infants: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Kernicterus is a devastating, permanently disabling neurologic condition resulting from bilirubin neurotoxicity. Black neonates account for more than 25% of kernicterus cases in the US, despite making up only approximately 14% of all births. This is a largely overlooked health disparity. OBSERVATIONS: The black kernicterus health disparity exists despite a lower overall incidence of clinically significant hyperbilirubinemia among black neonates, a paradox recently explained by a previously unrecognized risk for hazardous hyperbilirubinemia. Aligned with national and global health

Health of Newborns and Infants Born to Women With Disabilities: A Meta-analysis.

CONTEXT: Women with disabilities are at elevated risk for pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum complications. However, there has not been a synthesis of literature on the neonatal and infant health outcomes of their offspring. OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between maternal disability and risk for adverse neonatal and infant health outcomes. DATA SOURCES: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Embase, Medline, and PsycINFO were searched from database inception to January 2020. STUDY SELECTION: Studies were included if they reported original data on the association

Health care utilization by preterm infants with respiratory complications in Quebec.

INTRODUCTION: Despite notable advances in prenatal and neonatal care, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) remain important complications of preterm births, and their long-term sequelae are poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: To describe health care utilization and costs over a 16- to 25-year follow-up period in a cohort of preterm infants with respiratory complications. METHODS: Using provincial health administrative databases from Quebec, a cohort of individuals who were born prematurely with complications of RDS and⁄or BPD between 1983 and 1992 were identifie

Health risks to infants from exposure to PCBs, PCDDs and PCDFs.

Global contamination by a variety of anthropogenic persistent organic chemicals, such as dioxins and PCBs, has resulted in human exposure throughout all phases of development. Detectable concentrations of PCBs and dioxins have been found in amniotic fluid, placenta and foetal tissue samples while infants who are breast-fed can obtain blood levels greater than those of their mother's. In two separate food poisoning episodes where infants were exposed in utero to elevated levels of heat-degraded PCBs (PCBs, PCQs, PCDFs), a variety of adverse mental and physical developmental abnormalities have b

Positional cranial deformities in preterm infants and their association with health indicators.

UNLABELLED: Prematurity is a risk factor for positional cranial deformities since preterm infants have a more malleable skull and are susceptible to deformities due to external pressures. OBJECTIVES: To describe positional cranial deformities and peri/postnatal pathologies in preterm infants and to analyze the association between gestational age, birth weight, length of hospitalization, and severity of cranial deformities measured by the Cranial Vault Asymmetry Index (CVAI) and the Cephalic Index (CI). PATIENTS AND METHOD: Analytic, cross-sectional study. 103 preterm infants aged under 4 mon

Mental Health and Feeding Styles in Parents of Formula-Fed Infants.

Background: Nonresponsive feeding styles can contribute to rapid weight gain in infancy and subsequent obesity in childhood. There is a need to investigate factors such as parental mental health symptoms (stress, depression, and anxiety) that may contribute to nonresponsive feeding styles. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parental mental health symptoms and feeding styles in parents of healthy, term formula-fed infants during the first year of life. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive correlational design was employed using online surveys. We recruited

Recognition of illness in very young infants by inexperienced health workers.

To determine whether inexperienced health workers can recognize severe infection in infants less than 3 months of age, a study was conducted of 200 infants with cough, fever or 'not feeling well'. The presence or absence of five symptoms: cough, difficulty in breathing, feeding problem, fever or history of convulsions, and ten signs: appearing ill, respiratory rate > or = 60/min, chest indrawing, grunting, cyanosis, wheeze, lethargy, 'too hot', 'too cold' or abdominal distension, were recorded by a health worker, who made a diagnosis of 'ill' or 'mildly ill'. Each infant was then reviewed by a

Longitudinal DNA methylation in parent-infant pairs impacted by intergenerational social adversity: An RCT of the Michigan Model of Infant Mental Health Home Visiting.

INTRODUCTION: Early childhood development is a strong predictor of long-term health outcomes, potentially mediated via epigenetics (DNA methylation). The aim of the current study was to examine how childhood experiences, punitive parenting, and an intergenerational psychotherapeutic intervention may impact DNA methylation in young children and their mothers. METHODS: Mothers and their infants/toddlers between 0 and 24 months were recruited at baseline (n = 146, 73 pairs) to participate in a randomized control trial evaluating the effectiveness of The Michigan Model of Infant Mental Health Hom
