Male infertility represents about 50% of the causes of infertility in couples. The diagnosis process represents an important procedure for defining, when possible, the causes and approaching treatments (pharmacological, surgical) aimed at overcoming the problem. Several scientific studies have set out to discover early and indicative markers capable of providing information on the biological origin of infertility and increase current knowledge in the context of new potential therapeutic approaches. The prokineticin system (PROK) consists of the prokineticin 1 (PROK1) and prokineticin 2 (PROK2)

CONTEXT: Male infertility is defined as the inability to conceive following 1 year of regular unprotected intercourse. It is the causative factor in 50% of couples and a leading indication for assisted reproductive techniques (ART). Testicular failure is the most common cause of male infertility, yet the least studied to date.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: The review is an evidence-based summary of male infertility due to testicular failure with a focus on etiology, clinical assessment, and current management approaches. PubMed-searched articles and relevant clinical guidelines were reviewed in detai

There is increasing evidence that male infertility may be a harbinger of comorbid medical illness. Existing studies have shed light on associations between infertility and the prevalence of cardiovascular, metabolic, and oncologic disease, along with rates of hospitalization and overall mortality. Although theorized mechanisms include genetic, developmental, and behavioral precipitants, the exact nature of these associations remains unclear and warrants further investigation.

PURPOSE: Male infertility remains poorly understood at the molecular level. We aimed in this study to investigate the yield of a "genomics first" approach to male infertility.
METHODS: Patients with severe oligospermia and nonobstructive azoospermia were investigated using exome sequencing (ES) in parallel with the standard practice of chromosomal analysis.
RESULTS: In 285 patients, 10.5% (n = 30) had evidence of chromosomal aberrations while nearly a quarter (n = 69; 24.2%) had a potential monogenic form of male infertility. The latter ranged from variants in genes previously reported to ca

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, male responsible infertility is on the rise. In this retrospective study, we evaluated the infertility rate of this area.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cases reported from 1989 to 1993 to the Institute for Post Graduate Teaching and Research in Ayurved University were studied. Semen reports were also scrutinized.
RESULTS: A total number of 1,17,979 cases were examined. Male infertility rate was 45%. Patients' semen report showed that they were with oligozoospermia (22%), asthenozoospermia (11%) and azoospermia (12%).
DISCUSSION: The reported value (45%) for male infertilit

Previous studies have demonstrated that the polycomb repressor Bmi1 is universally expressed in all types of testicular cells and might regulate the spermatogonia proliferation, however, it is unclear whether Bmi1 plays a critical role in maintaining normal male fertility in vivo. To answer this question, we first confirmed that Bmi1 is universally expressed in all types of testicular cells and found that the gene relative expression levels of Bmi1 in testis were the highest relative to other organs. Then we investigated the role of Bmi1 in maintaining normal male fertility using Bmi1 knockout

BACKGROUND: One of the main factors affecting male infertility is DNA fragmentation in sperm. Male infertility is a heterogeneous group of disorders, known causes account for only 30-50%, and unknown cause (idiopathic) constitute the rest. Infertility involves nearly 15% of couples in the reproductive age, and only the male problem involves about 40% of the problems.
AIM: We have studied our DNA damage to sperm cells of a group of infertile males (113 patients) with abnormal sperm parameters (oligoasthenospermia and oligospermia) and a group of male patients (80 patients) with normal semen pa

Infertility is a disease that affects one in seven couples. As male infertility affects approximately 30% of these couples with an unknown cause in half the cases, it represents a major public health concern. The classic treatment of male infertility involves intrauterine insemination, with modest outcome, and in vitro fertilization with intracytoplasmic sperm injection, which is known to be invasive and expensive, without treating the specific cause of infertility. Male fertility is mainly evaluated through a semen assessment where abnormal parameters such as concentration and motility can be

STUDY QUESTION: Are polymorphisms of taste receptor genes associated with male infertility?
SUMMARY ANSWER: This study has showed the associations between three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in taste receptors genes (TASR) and male infertility.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Recent studies showed the expression of taste receptors in the testis and in spermatozoa, suggesting their possible role in infertility. The vast genetic variability in taste genes results in a large degree of diversity in various human phenotypes.
STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: In this study, we genotyped 19 SNPs in 12

There are a variety of dysfunctions of the ejaculatory process which may negatively impact male fertility but are not commonly discussed. The meanings of the terms used to describe these conditions are often unclear. This month's Views and Reviews define the commonly used and confused terms. The initial article explains normal male function with an emphasis on the ejaculatory process. Following articles discuss the causes, evaluation and management of the male with ejaculatory dysfunction.

Although common reproductive problems, such as male infertility and testicular cancer, present in adult life, strong evidence exists that these reproductive disorders might have a fetal origin. The evidence is derived not only from large epidemiological studies that show birth-cohort effects with regard to testicular cancer, levels of testosterone and semen quality, but also from histopathological observations. Many infertile men have histological signs of testicular dysgenesis, including Sertoli-cell-only tubules, immature undifferentiated Sertoli cells, microliths and Leydig cell nodules. Th

Infertile men are frequently affected by physical abnormalities that might be detected on routine general and genital examinations. These structural abnormalities might damage or block the testes, epididymis, seminal ducts or other reproductive structures and can ultimately decrease fertility. Physical deformities are variable in their pathological impact on male reproductive function; some render men totally sterile, such as bilateral absence of the vasa deferentia, while others cause only mild alterations in semen parameters. Concise and up-to-date information regarding the contemporary epid

A complete breeding soundness evaluation is essential for assessment of the infertile male dog. Cryptorchidism, a sex-limited autosomal recessive trait, is more common as a unilateral condition. Azoospermia is an ejaculate consisting of seminal plasma but lacking sperm; repeated semen collections in the presence of an estrual bitch will rule out inadequate experience and lack of sexual stimulation. Both carnitine and alkaline phosphatase (AP) are produced in the epididymis; seminal plasma AP concentrations>5000 U/L indicate a normal ejaculate, whereas <5000 U/L is associated with incomplete ej

Varicoceles are found in 19 to 41% of infertile men, and is one treatable form of male infertility. The mechanism by which varicoceles cause the variable effect on male infertility and spermatogenesis is still unknown. Experimental animal models play a useful (but limited) role due to the sudden and variable iatrogenic nature of the varicoceles and the duration of the studies. Much of the human data are derived by the characterization of associated differences in measurable parameters between men with and without varicoceles. The role of hyperthermia, testicular blood flow and venous pressure

In the past few years, the major genetic causes of male infertility have been elucidated and many of these can now be treated using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). This has raised a number of wider issues in the families of people with this type of infertility. Coupled with the essential need for individual (or family) confidentiality, this type of treatment demands a very careful and sensitive counselling approach. The main requirement is for fertility and genetic teams to collaborate to provide a person-oriented approach to the application of two very complex and intimidating techno

Four men aged 38, 31, 27 and 35 years were examined because of infertility. The first three had idiopathic oligozoospermia, the other bilateral ductus deferens agenesis. They were referred for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Clinical genetic investigation including thorough family history, chromosome investigation and molecular DNA investigation revealed that one patient had mosaicism for Klinefelter syndrome (46,XY/47,XXY), the second a familial balanced translocation (46,XY,t(4;16)) and the third a microdeletion in the AZFc region of the Y chromosome, while the fourth was homozygous
