Inoculation Age of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin Tokyo-172 Strain and Vaccine-related Adverse Reactions in Taiwan Birth Cohort of 2012-2017.

BACKGROUND: In 2016 in Taiwan, inoculation with the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) Tokyo-172 vaccine was postponed from 24 hours after birth to 5-8 months of age. We reviewed BCG-induced adverse reactions reported to the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) to identify differences between early and delayed BCG inoculation. METHODS: Clinical presentations of BCG-related adverse reactions reported to VICP for the 2012-2017 birth cohort were reviewed until the end of 2019. The correlations between inoculation age and complications were evaluated. RESULTS: We analyzed 233 BCG adverse react

Adjuvant effect of Loxosceles gaucho (South American brown spider) venom.

Injection of L. gaucho venom and antigens (ovalbumin, ovomucoid and bovine gamma globulin) into rabbit skin induced an intense local inflammatory lesion and resulted in a significant increase in the level of IgG antibodies to the antigen in both the primary and secondary humoral immune response. The adjuvant activity of the venom was associated with its high mol. wt components, which are responsible for the inflammatory lesion. Rabbits rendered unresponsive to the venom and injected with venom plus antigen presented a very mild local inflammatory reaction and no increase in antibody formation.

Investigation of the endogenous chemoattractants involved in 111In-eosinophil accumulation in passive cutaneous anaphylactic reactions in the guinea-pig.

1. Eosinophil accumulation and plasma extravasation are features of type I allergic responses. In an attempt to characterize the mediators of these responses, we have examined the local accumulation of 111In-eosinophils and leakage of 125I-human serum albumin (125I-HSA) during passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) reactions and in response to defined inflammatory mediators in the guinea-pig. Animals were passively sensitized by intradermal injection of anti-bovine gamma globulin antibody (50 microliters, 1/50 dilution). After 20-24 h, animals were injected intravenously with 111In-eosinophils an

Fremanezumab-associated injection site alopecia.

Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) inhibitors, in the form of injectable monoclonal antibodies, are a newer class of drugs for the prevention of migraine headaches. In clinical trials, they have been found to be effective with good tolerance and few adverse effects. Alopecia has been increasingly noted as a post-marketing event associated with CGRP inhibitor injectables. Of the case reports available on this topic, alopecia has commonly been localised to the scalp and associated with erenumab use; however, not as much has been reported for fremanezumab nor for injection site-related alopec

Insulin-induced Lipoatrophy in a Patient on Insulin Analogue Therapy: a Case Report.

Insulin-induced lipoatrophy is a rare skin complication in patients with diabetes mellitus. It is characterized primarily by localized subcutaneous atrophy of the fatty tissue at the site of frequent insulin injection. We report a clinical case of a 38-year-old woman with lipoatrophy, developed during treatment with insulin analogues. Lipoatrophic zone formation began 3 months after the treatment was initiated. A lipoatrophic defect developed on the thighs and the upper outer arms, resulting from repeated insulin injections at the same site. Regarding lipoatrophic areas, treatment with topical

Illicit injections in bodybuilders: a clinicopathological study of 11 cases in 9 patients with a spectrum of histological reaction patterns.

The practice of self-injection of anabolic steroids (AS) in bodybuilders is common. AS are not the only materials used by bodybuilders for muscle augmentation or image enhancement. Other materials, for example, plant oils, silicon, Vaseline, and paraffin are also injected either in a pure form or mixed with AS. Muscle bulking is the main aim. However, bodybuilders undergo illicit injections for cosmetic, therapeutic, and sexual purposes. Even though the practice of unsupervised injection is probably common in the sports community, site-specific complications are underreported in the medical li

Apoptosis inhibitor of macrophage (AIM/CD5L) as a potential immunomodulator in feline injection-site sarcoma: a hypothesis on tumor-macrophage interactions.

AIM (apoptosis inhibitor of macrophage), also known as CD5L, is a macrophage-derived scavenger protein with broad immunomodulatory roles in mammals. Secreted by tissue macrophages, AIM circulates bound to IgM pentamers, which stabilize the protein in blood; free AIM is released during inflammation to influence immune signaling and cellular homeostasis. (Yang et al. 2023). In cats, AIM exhibits distinctive structural and biochemical properties, existing as both a three-domain (37 kDa) and a four-domain (45 kDa) variant generated through exon 3 duplication (Evangelista et al. 2025), and binding

Failure of intradermal skin testing with gluten to produce delayed hypersensitivity reactions in patients with dermatitis herpetiformis.

Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is characterized by a rash and a gluten-sensitive enteropathy (GSE) indistinguishable from that of coeliac disease. T-cell-mediated mechanisms have been implicated in the pathogenesis of GSE. It seems feasible that intradermal injection of gluten, in patients known to have GSE, could lead to an influx of T cells sensitized to gluten, with subsequent development of a delayed hypersensitivity-type reaction. Six patients with DH and three normal subjects had intradermal injections of 'Frazer's fraction III' (FFIII; the partial peptic tryptic digest of gluten which is

A case of septal panniculitis secondary to interferon treatment.

The most common side effects of interferon-beta therapy following subcutaneous administration include pain, inflammation and induration at the injection site, which occur in approximately 20-60% of patients. Besides, transient injection-site erythema is frequently seen in beta-interferon therapy. Less frequent reactions at injection sites include vascular thrombosis, mucinosis, dermal and systemic sclerosis, necrosis, and ulceration. Here, we report a 44-year-old case diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, who developed pain and swelling following interferon-beta 1a treatment after an improperly a

Minocycline successfully treats exaggerated granulomatous hypersensitivity reaction to Mw immunotherapy.

Mycobacterium W (Mw) vaccine has been found to be effective in the treatment of leprosy and warts. Despite increasing use of Mw immunotherapy, data on its safety is limited. We report a series of eight patients who developed persisting injection site granulomatous reaction following Mw immunotherapy and were successfully treated with minocycline. Eight patients with persistent nodular swelling at the site of Mw injections were identified. Seven of them had received Mw immunotherapy for cutaneous warts and one for verrucous epidermal nevus. The lesions were firm, erythematous, succulent, non-te

Localized skin reactions to insulin: insulin lipodystrophies and skin reactions to pumped subcutaneous insulin therapy.

Patients treated with insulin can develop a variety of adverse cutaneous and subcutaneous reactions localized at sites of insulin injection. The reported frequency, severity, and type of skin reactions to insulin are varied, as are the theories relating to their etiology and recommendations for treatment. In this review, several types of localized skin reactions to insulin injection will be described. Particular attention will be devoted to insulin lipoatrophy and skin reactions in patients using mechanical devices for continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion. Recent advances in diabetes care

Innate immune responses against mRNA vaccine promote cellular immunity through IFN-β at the injection site.

mRNA vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 have revolutionized vaccine development, but their immunological mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we investigate injection site responses of mRNA vaccines by generating a comprehensive single-cell transcriptome profile upon lipid nanoparticle (LNP) or LNP-mRNA challenge in female BALB/c mice. We show that LNP-induced stromal pro-inflammatory responses and mRNA-elicited type I interferon responses dominate the initial injection site responses. By tracking the fate of delivered mRNA, we discover that injection site fibroblasts are highly enriched with t

Complications related to Artecoll injections for soft tissue augmentation of the hand: 3 case reports.

Rejuvenation of the aging hand has gained recent popularity. I report on 3 cases with complications related to the use of Artecoll (a permanent filler composed of polymethylmethacrylate) in soft tissue augmentation of the hand. All 3 patients had late-onset granuloma reactions, and the acute attacks were successfully treated with local injections of triamcinolone. However, recurrent reactions and hypopigmentation at the injection sites were noted.

Lipodystrophy in patients with acromegaly receiving pegvisomant.

CONTEXT: Pegvisomant, a GH receptor antagonist, suppresses serum IGF-I levels into the normal range in more than 95% of patients with acromegaly. Documented side effects in the initial registration studies included headache, injection-site reactions, flu-like syndrome, and reversible elevation of hepatic enzymes. OBJECTIVE: We report seven patients with acromegaly treated with pegvisomant who developed lipodystrophy at the site of injection (anterior abdominal wall, thigh, buttock, and upper arm). This side effect resulted in discontinuation of pegvisomant in four patients, with subsequent re

Lesions resulting from attempted Shwartzman reaction in turkey poults inoculated with Pasteurella multocida lipopolysaccharide.

Five-week-old turkey poults were given two consecutive intravenous injections (24 hours apart) of highly purified Pasteurella multocida lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in an effort to induce a generalized Shwartzman reaction. There were no gross lesions, and microscopic lesions were limited to focal hepatic necrosis with heterophil infiltration. Hepatic lesions did not differ qualitatively from lesions in turkeys given a single dose of lipopolysaccharide. Margination of heterophils in the pulmonary vasculature was observed in turkeys 4 hours after a single injection of LPS, but it was not present in

Thimerosal induces toxic reaction in non-sensitized animals.

The effects of injection of thimerosal solution on nonsensitized animals was investigated. Intrafootpad injection of thimerosal solution in nonsensitized mice resulted in a swelling response which peaked 1 h after injection and lasted for more than 24 h. Histopathological examination showed that there were severe edema and infiltration of polymorphonuclear neutrophils at the site of injection. An increased vascular permeability was observed after cutaneous injection of thimerosal solution on the back of nonsensitized rats. Since mercuric chloride and methyl mercury induced severer reactions, a
