Contrast-enhanced ultrasound: a new tool for imaging the superficial lymphatic vessels of the upper limb.

BACKGROUND: Despite the new lymphatic imaging methods, there is still a need for a straightforward method of detecting lymphatic abnormalities. Our goal was to investigate the feasibility of applying a contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) procedure as a new approach for visualising the superficial lymphatic vessels of the upper limb. METHODS: Thirty healthy volunteers were examined with CEUS after bilateral intradermal injection of Sonazoid® contrast agent in distal antebrachium. We registered factors affecting intradermal injections, imaging of the superficial lymphatic vessels and the enhanc

Ultrasound-Identified Trigger-Point and Ultrasound-Guided IncobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin®) Injection for Refractory V2-V3 Trigeminal Neuralgia: A Case Report.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) can be refractory to systemic anticonvulsants. Targeted botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injections are an emerging local therapy. Ultrasound (US) may help identify subclinical peripheral trigger points that are not evident on palpation. We report a case of a 50-year-old male with longstanding left-sided V2-V3 TN who experienced rapid and durable pain relief after US-identified trigger-point mapping, followed by combined intradermal and US-guided intramuscular injections of incobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin®). On clinical examination, trigger points were not prominent; howev

Using intradermal rabies vaccine to boost immunity in people with low rabies antibody levels.

Intradermal rabies vaccine is recommended by the World Health Organisation, but not all countries, including England, follow this recommendation. A group of 12 adults in England previously given pre-exposure intradermal rabies vaccine were considered to be non-immune to rabies because their rabies antibody titres were known to be less than 0.5 IU/mL. A cohort study examined the immunizing effect of increasing the participants' cumulative dose of intradermal rabies to 2.0 IU. All patients subsequently demonstrated rabies antibody levels >0.5 IU·mL supporting evidence of adequate sero-conversion

Avoiding and treating dermal filler complications.

All fillers are associated with the risk of both early and late complications. Early side effects such as swelling, redness, and bruising occur after intradermal or subdermal injections. The patient has to be aware of and accept these risks. Adverse events that last longer than 2 weeks can be attributable to technical shortcomings (e.g., too superficial an implantation of a long-lasting filler substance). Such adverse events can be treated with intradermal 5-fluorouracil, steroid injections, vascular lasers, or intense pulsed light, and later with dermabrasion or shaving. Late adverse events a

Extracranial activation of ATP-sensitive potassium channels induces vasodilation without nociceptive effects.

INTRODUCTION: Levcromakalim opens ATP-sensitive potassium channels (KATP channel) and induces head pain in healthy volunteers and migraine headache in migraine patients, but no pain in other parts of the body. KATP channels are expressed in C- and Aδ-fibers, and these channels might directly activate nociceptors and thereby evoke pain in humans. METHODS: To assess the local effect of KATP channel opening in trigeminal and extra-trigeminal regions, we performed a crossover, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in healthy volunteers. Participants received intradermal and intramuscular injecti

Rabies post-exposure vaccination in 2 visits within a week: A 4-site intradermal regimen.

Rabies is fatal in all unvaccinated patients bitten by dogs, and so post-exposure vaccine regimens must be robust enough to ensure their survival under all conditions. Treatment tends to be excessive for most people, but there is justified anxiety about reducing vaccine dosage and shortening regimens. Recently, World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended one week primary post-exposure intradermal regimens requiring 3 clinic visits, but these are unlikely to prove economical where rabies vaccination is most needed, in deprived rural areas of Africa and Asia. A highly immunogenic regimen involvi

Prospective Observational Study of Polynucleotide Injections for Periorbital Rhytides.

INTRODUCTION: Polynucleotides (PN), derived from salmon sperm DNA, are highly purified DNA fragments with reported tissue-repair and anti-inflammatory properties mediated through adenosine A2A receptor activation. These agents have been increasingly used in aesthetic dermatology for skin rejuvenation and scar treatment. This study aimed to evaluate longitudinal changes in periorbital appearance and patient-reported outcomes following intradermal polynucleotide injections. METHODS: This prospective observational case series included patients presenting for undereye rejuvenation who received in

Delayed hypersensitivity to a corticosteroid suspension containing methylprednisolone. Two cases of conjunctival inflammation after retrobulbar injection.

Two patients with chronic iridocyclitis had a delayed hypersensitivity reaction, characterized by severe conjunctival inflammation, after retrobulbar injections with a commercial suspension of methylprednisolone acetate. Although patch test reactions to methylprednisolone at enhanced concentrations were negative, delayed hypersensitivity could be easily demonstrated by intradermal testing with this corticosteroid. Both patients also had concomitant delayed hypersensitivity to a proprietary preservative (myristyl gamma-picolinium chloride) in the commercial corticosteroid suspension, which was

One clinic visit for pre-exposure rabies vaccination (a preliminary one year study).

We performed an abbreviated prospective study of rabies pre-exposure (PREP) vaccination in 109 volunteers. Group 1, the control group, received the conventional 3 intradermal injections on days 0, 7 and 21. Group 2 received one rabies vaccine injection (0.1 ml intradermally) at 2 sites on a single day. Group 3 was given one full ampule intramuscularly. One year later, all 3 groups received booster injections (0.1 ml at 4 sites) intradermally at one time or 2 injections intramuscularly on days 0 and 3. All subjects achieved a vigorous anamnestic antibody response 7 days after the boosters. Thes

Use of botulinum toxin to treat blepharospasm in a 16-year-old with a dystonic syndrome.

A 16-year-old boy with generalized dystonia had continuous, severe blepharospasm and facial grimacing. Local intradermal injections of botulinum A toxin greatly reduced the spasms and improved function. No side effects were observed. Local botulinum A toxin injections may be useful in the treatment of eyelid and facial spasms in patients with generalized dystonias.

Intradermal infections of mice by low numbers of african trypanosomes are controlled by innate resistance but enhance susceptibility to reinfection.

Antibodies are required to control blood-stage forms of African trypanosomes in humans and animals. Here, we report that intradermal infections by low numbers of African trypanosomes are controlled by innate resistance but prime the adaptive immune response to increase susceptibility to a subsequent challenge. Mice were found 100 times more resistant to intradermal infections by Trypanosoma congolense or Trypanosoma brucei than to intraperitoneal infections. B cell-deficient and RAG2(-/-) mice are as resistant as wild-type mice to intradermal infections, whereas inducible nitric oxide synthase

Adjuvant-induced arthritis in the temporomandibular joint of rats.

When Lewis rats were immunized by intradermal injection into the parietal scalp rather than into the footpad with mycobacterial delipidated cells in squalene, arthritis could be produced in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) with a maximum incidence of 60%, accompanied by systemic polyarthritis. Other methods of immunization including intradermal injection into the tail, posterior cervical region, or intra-inguinal lymph nodes did not induce arthritis in the TMJ. A combination of this inoculation and hemiocclusal loss markedly increased the incidence of arthritis in the TMJ. This arthritis in t

Immunogenicity of varicella-zoster virus vaccine by different routes of administration: Comparable vaccination efficacy of one-fifth dose intradermal vaccination to conventional subcutaneous vaccination.

BACKGROUND: The live attenuated varicella-zoster virus (VZV) vaccine is used for the prevention of chickenpox and herpes zoster; however, there have been few studies on the immunogenicity of intradermal vaccination. OBJECTIVE: To compare the immunogenicity between subcutaneous and intradermal VZV vaccination. METHODS: Thirty healthy participants aged 50-75 who developed erythema less than 10 mm in diameter in VZV skin test were examined. Thirteen participants received full dose of VZV vaccine subcutaneously and 17 participants received one-fifth dose of vaccine intradermally. Immunogenicity

Determination of Depth-Dependent Intradermal Immunogenicity of Adjuvanted Inactivated Polio Vaccine Delivered by Microinjections via Hollow Microneedles.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the depth-dependent intradermal immunogenicity of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) delivered by depth-controlled microinjections via hollow microneedles (HMN) and to investigate antibody response enhancing effects of IPV immunization adjuvanted with CpG oligodeoxynucleotide 1826 (CpG) or cholera toxin (CT). METHODS: A novel applicator for HMN was designed to permit depth- and volume-controlled microinjections. The applicator was used to immunize rats intradermally with monovalent IPV serotype 1 (IPV1) at injection depths ranging from 50 to 550

Needle-free intradermal delivery of a recombinant PRRSV-vectored CSFV E2 vaccine enhances humoral immunity and growth performance in piglets.

Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) and Classical Swine Fever Virus (CSFV) remain among the most economically devastating pathogens of swine worldwide. Needle-free intradermal vaccination has emerged as a promising alternative to conventional injection, potentially improving animal welfare, biosecurity, and antigen delivery efficiency within high-density swine production systems. A recombinant PRRSV-vectored live vaccine expressing the CSFV E2 protein (rPRRSV-E2) was evaluated in fifteen 30-day-old healthy piglets. Animals were randomly assigned to three groups: intramu

Different injection patterns of incobotulinumtoxinA for crow's feet: a split-face comparative study.

BACKGROUND: IncobotulinumtoxinA has been previously used for the treatment of lateral periorbital lines (crow's feet). However, a standardized injection technique has not been established. OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy and effect duration of two injection techniques of incobotulinumtoxinA for crow's feet treatment. METHODS: Forty-eight patients with crow's feet were recruited and randomly assigned to receive bilateral treatments using either a 3-point intramuscular or a 6-point intradermal injection technique (8-12 units of incobotulinumtoxinA on each side). Improvement was assessed at

Use of Botulinum Toxin for Androgenic Alopecia: A Systematic Review.

In this systematic review, we summarize the efficacy and safety of intradermal and intramuscular botulinum toxin injections for androgenic alopecia (AGA). Using PubMed, we conducted a literature search up to February 2021 using the following keyword combinations: "botulinum toxin" or "botox" and "androgenetic alopecia," "hair loss," or "alopecia." Five clinical studies met our inclusion criteria: 4 prospective cohorts and 1 randomized clinical trial (RCT). Study durations ranged from 24 to 60 weeks. No studies included control groups or compared botulinum toxin injections against approved trea

BCG vaccination by bifurcated needle in a pilot vaccination programme.

The bifurcated needle technique for BCG vaccination was compared with intradermal injection in a mass BCG and smallpox vaccination programme in Afghanistan. In all population groups the bifurcated needle technique produced substantial tuberculin sensitivity, which however was significantly inferior to that following intradermal injection. The advantages of the bifurcated needle technique did not result in a significant increase in vaccination coverage and output. Under the present circumstances vaccination by bifurcated needle would probably be more expensive than intradermal vaccination.

Safety evaluation of a buffer used in the lyophilization of canine platelets: type I hypersensitivity reaction in dogs caused by bovine serum albumin.

INTRODUCTION: The present study was designed to evaluate the safety of substances generally used in the preparation of lyophilized platelet products (LPPs) because the possibility of an immune response to bovine serum albumin (BSA) was considered high when using previously described technology. METHODS: An intradermal skin test, followed by a drug provocation test, was conducted to observe adverse events and identify the substances responsible for an immune response. Five male beagles (2 years old) weighing 12-14 kg were used. The dogs were clinically healthy and had no history of medication

Lethal and vascular permeability activities of botulinum C2 toxin induced by separate injections of the two toxin components.

Two components, designated I and II, of botulinum C2 toxin were injected separately into the same animal. The intravenous injection of one component at different time intervals after intravenous injection of the other component, irrespective of the sequence, was lethal to mice. When components I and II were injected intradermally into separate sites, vascular permeability increased only at the site where component II was injected. The sizes of blued areas were smaller with increased distance between the injection sites of components I and II. When one component was injected intravenously and t
