Differences in obesity rates between people with and without disabilities and the association of disability and obesity: a nationwide population study in South Korea.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to identify the differences in obesity rates among people with and without disabilities, and evaluate the relationship between obesity rates and the existence of disabilities or characteristics of disabilities. METHODS: Mass screening data from 2008 from the National Disability Registry and National Health Insurance (NHI) are used. For analysis, we classified physical disability into three subtypes: upper limb disability, lower limb disability, and spinal cord injury. For a control group, we extracted people without disabilities by each subtype. To

The Judas kiss: On the work and retrenchment cures and the troubles they bring.

This Sounding Board article uses a number of societal stereotypes related to work and welfare to problematize the relationship between work and health, and how this relates to the prevention and management of work disability. It outlines current discourses in policy and research around these issues, and discusses some of the ethical implications of these discourses. The article concludes that the current policies on work disability and sickness insurance takes their point of departure in over-simplified accounts of the relationship between work and health, and that a more critical reading of t

Is the rise in illicit opioids affecting labor supply and disability claiming rates?

This paper examines how the recent transition of the opioid crisis from prescription opioids to more prevalent misuse of illicit opioids, such as heroin and fentanyl, altered labor supply behavior and disability insurance claiming rates. We exploit differential geographic exposure to the reformulation of OxyContin, the largest reduction in access to abusable prescription opioids to date, to study the effects of substitution to illicit markets. We observe meaningful reductions in labor supply measured in terms of employment-to-population ratios, hours worked, and earnings in states more exposed

Age independency of mobility decrease assessed using the Locomotive Syndrome Risk Test in elderly with disability: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Mobility decrease is reportedly age-dependent in community dwelling elderly, and a major factor of disability in the geriatric population. The purpose of this study is to examine whether mobility decrease, as assessed using a set of tests, is similarly age-dependent in elderly adults who already have disability. METHODS: One hundred thirty-five community-dwelling elderly (54 men, 81 women) with disability and 1469 independent community dwellers (1009 men, 460 women) were analyzed. Disability was defined having a certified need for care under the long-term care insurance system in

[Assessment of working capacity of a patient with cardiovascular disease for health insurance purposes].

Assessment of the working and functional capacity of a patient with cardiovascular disease is based on the application by the person applying for health insurance or pension benefit, and on the data of the medical records and other documents. In addition to the description of the restrictions in everyday life, careful clinical examination, interpretation of electrocardiogram and, if necessary, a chest radiograph, remain essential in the assessment of working and functional capacity. Today, echocardiography is becoming increasingly important. A correctly conducted exercise test and its interpre

Antithrombotic management of ischaemic stroke and transient ischaemic attack in China: a consecutive cross-sectional survey.

1. Little is known about the prevention of secondary stroke in China. In the present study, we assessed the status of antithrombotic management of stroke patients in clinics across China. 2. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 19 urban neurological clinics. All subjects diagnosed with ischaemic stroke (IS) or transient ischaemic attack (TIA) were enrolled consecutively in the study. Face-to-face interviews were conducted by research assistants using questionnaires on the day of enrollment. The data recorded included demographic and clinical characteristics, medication and reasons for not

The workers' compensation system: worker friend or foe?

BACKGROUND: The workers' compensation system was designed to help injured workers who have substantial medical expenses and perhaps have lost a great deal of income. This study determines both similarities and differences in how workers experience their interactions with the workers' compensation systems in Florida and Wisconsin. METHODS: Ethnographic open-ended interviews with 204 workers from Florida and 198 workers in Wisconsin were conducted. All the workers had back injuries in 1990 and were either paid workers' compensation temporary disability benefits for at least 4 weeks or received

Association of cancer characteristics with disability status and timing of onset among working age cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies examine the impact of cancer and disability on healthcare use, financial toxicity, and health outcomes, but not the relationship between cancer and disability. This study investigates whether and how cancer characteristics are associated with disability status (Social Security Disability Insurance) and timing of onset among prime working age cancer survivors. METHODS: We used the 1999-2022 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results file linked with Medicare data. Outcome was a categorical variable indicating no disability, disability onset ≥2 years and 0-<2 years

Congenital Heart Disease transition practices in the United States: a survey of adult Congenital Heart Disease programs.

BACKGROUND: International organisations recommend that patients with CHD undergo a structured transition process to prepare for lifelong cardiac care. However, there is a limited understanding of current transition practices in the United States (U.S.) from the perspective of adult CHD programs. The purpose of this study was to characterise adult CHD transition practices across the U.S. METHOD: We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional survey of adult CHD programs in the U.S., inquiring about transition practices (preparation, transfer, and integration), resources, specialists, and barriers

A Matter of Choice: Opportunities and Obstacles Facing People with ESRD.

Kidney failure is an overwhelming, life-shattering event, but patients with ESRD do not see themselves as being at the end stage of their lives. On the contrary, patients opting for kidney dialysis are choosing to live. Ideally, then, public policy would support patients' choices about how to live-specifically, the choice to continue working. Many patients with ESRD faced with the limitations of their health status and the demands of their treatment understandably choose to leave their jobs, a choice that is facilitated by the availability of public disability and health insurance. However, ot

Missing Narrative: Examining the Impact of Disability on Post-Operative Infectious Complications.

Background: More than 20% of the population in the United States suffers from a disability, yet the impact of disability on post-operative outcomes remains understudied. This analysis aims to characterize post-operative infectious complications in patients with disability. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective review of the National Readmission Database (2019) among patients undergoing common general surgery procedures. As per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), disability was defined as severe hearing, visual, intellectual, or motor impairment/caregiver depende

A new source of data to inform policy on chronic diseases.

Chronic diseases are the nation's leading cause of disability and death. To guide policy discussions about chronic diseases, data are essential but have been lacking on the commercially insured. FAIR Health is introducing Atlas, a free data source that addresses this need. Based on the nation's largest collection of recent commercial claims, FAIR Health Atlas visualizes chronic disease data across all fifty states and Washington, DC, revealing areas facing health challenges. Results using FAIR Health Atlas concern the commercially insured. For example, Atlas data show that West Virginia was th

Disability Benefit and Gambling Disorder: A Longitudinal Study Based on National Registry Data.

Rates of gambling disorder (GD) have been found to be higher among people receiving disability benefit, but few studies have investigated whether receiving disability benefit prospectively actually increases the risk of GD. The present study investigated whether those with a disability benefit had an increased risk of developing GD using a case-control design. The study sample was retrieved from the Norwegian Patient Registry (NPR, N = 5,131) and consisted of all adults in Norway (18 years and older) who had received a GD diagnosis (F63.0 according to ICD-10) between 2008 and 2018. The study g
