Poxvirus was the causative agent of two unusual outbreaks of proliferative glossitis in canary ( Serinus canaria forma domestica) breeders in the Northern Italy. A total of 45, 7-9-mo-old canaries were submitted in fair postmortem conditions to the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie at the beginning of November 2005 for diagnostic investigation. Birds belonged to two unrelated and geographically distant aviaries in northern Italy, herein identified as Aviary A and Aviary B. The two breeder flocks had both attended the same bird exposition held at the beginning of October and s

Hyalomma dromedarii is a hard tick species parasitizing domestic animals, particularly camels. Heavy infestation results in huge economic losses through severe blood loss and transmission of pathogens, in addition to crucial problems for camel production. Worldwide control of ticks is mainly based on acaricides, which have led to environmental pollution, resistance development, and an increase in the cost of control. To reduce the drawbacks of chemical acaricides, new tick control methods are therefore required, such as the application of natural plant extracts. Citrullus colocynthis, commonly

BACKGROUND: Despite the common use of topical ophthalmic corticosteroids in dogs, detailed reports on systemic and dermatologic adverse effects are limited.
RESULTS: Nine purpose-bred research Beagles were treated with difluprednate 0.05% ophthalmic emulsion in one or both eyes 2-3 times daily. Some difluprednate treated dogs developed mild to severe alopecia of the periocular region, face, and distal pinna (5/9). The median duration of treatment prior to onset of dermatologic signs for difluprednate treated dogs was 550 days (453-1160 days). Diagnostic testing included complete blood count (

Organismal growth and body size are influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. We have utilized the strong molecular genetic techniques available in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to identify genetic determinants of body size. In C. elegans, DBL-1, a member of the conserved family of secreted growth factors known as the Transforming Growth Factor β superfamily, is known to play a major role in growth control. The mechanisms by which other determinants of body size function, however, is less well understood. To identify additional genes involved in body size regulation, a geneti

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Some patients have insufficient treatment response to conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (cDMARD); although biologics have proven to be an effective treatment for RA, the effects that bDMARDs have on integumentary, cardiac, and immune systems and the high costs associated with these treatments, make that mesenchymal stem cell-based therapies (MSCs) for RA are being considered potential treatment methods. This work analyses the performance in safety and efficacy terms of MSCs techniques.
METHODS AND FINDING: A literature search was performed in PubMed

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Obesity is a common health concern in sterilized cats and may adversely affect animal welfare through metabolic disturbances and increased susceptibility to disease. Although sterilization offers several health and population-control benefits, it can predispose cats to excessive weight gain. This study investigated the association between obesity-related alterations in blood chemistry and animal welfare outcomes in sterilized cats by comparing obese and ideal body condition score (BCS) groups in Lampung, Indonesia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An unmatched case-control study was

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) and 1,2,3,6,7,8- and 1,2,3,7,8,9-hexachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (HCDDs) are among the most toxic and carcinogenic of "man-made" chemicals. These "dioxins," as well as many of the other polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofuran (PCDFs) derivatives, are chlorinated aromatic compounds which are chemically stable, insoluble in water, and highly soluble in fats and oils. TCDD acts as a complete carcinogen in several species, causing both common and uncommon tumors at multiple sites. It is a highly potent chemical carcinogen in chronic animal stu

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is a curative strategy against a variety of malignant and nonmalignant disorders. However, acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD and cGVHD, respectively) commonly complicate this approach, culminating in substantial morbidities and mortalities. The integumentary system is the preponderant organ involved in cGVHD, and its response to existing treatments, including well-versed immunosuppressants and novel targeted therapies, is not desirable. Despite the rarity, ulcers of sclerotic skin cGVHD are treatment-refractory and

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is a multisystem disorder characterized by bilateral granulomatous panuveitis resulting in serous retinal detachments, disk edema, and a sunset glow fundus development. Furthermore, it is associated with various extraocular findings, such as tinnitus, hearing loss, vertigo, poliosis, and vitiligo (1). VKH is considered to be an autoimmune disease mediated by T-cells targeting melanocyte antigen tyrosinase peptide (2). Moreover, VKH more often occurs in individuals with a genetic predisposition to the disease, including those of Asian and Hispanic heritage (3)
