Experiences of childhood emotional maltreatment and emotional intelligence in young men.

BACKGROUND: Long-term cognitive-affective impairments could be a significant outcome of childhood maltreatment. According to trait models of emotional intelligence, experiential abilities (emotion perception and thought facilitation through emotion) are distinguished from strategic abilities (understanding and managing emotion). In a previous study including only women with adverse childhood experiences, childhood emotional neglect was found to be linked to a diminished capacity to understand own feelings in adulthood. In the current study, relationships between childhood maltreatment experien

The Effectiveness of an Emotional Intelligence Training Program on Emotional Intelligence and Multidimensional Self-Efficacy: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of a structured emotional intelligence training program on emotional intelligence and multidimensional self-efficacy among undergraduate nursing students. BACKGROUND: Emotional intelligence is recognized as a core competency in nursing education, supporting emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and academic persistence in demanding clinical environments. Emotional intelligence development remains insufficiently embedded within many undergraduate nursing curricula. METHODS: A quasi-experimental two-group pretest-posttest study design was conduct

Effects of Segmental and Suprasegmental Speech Perception on Reading in Pediatric Cochlear Implant Recipients.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine whether suprasegmental speech perception contributes unique variance in predictions of reading decoding and comprehension for prelingually deaf children using two devices, at least one of which is a cochlear implant (CI). METHOD: A total of 104, 5- to 9-year-old CI recipients completed tests of segmental perception (e.g., word recognition in quiet and noise, recognition of vowels and consonants in quiet), suprasegmental perception (e.g., talker and stress discrimination, nonword stress repetition, and emotion identification), and nonverbal intel

Neonatal Intestinal Failure Is Independently Associated With Impaired Cognitive Development Later in Childhood.

OBJECTIVE: The impact of pediatric intestinal failure (IF) on neurodevelopment beyond infancy has not been systematically studied. Our aim was to evaluate cognitive and motor impairment and to identify risk factors for adverse outcomes among children with IF. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional single-center study at the Helsinki University Children's Hospital. Patients with IF with >60 days of parental nutrition (PN) dependency aged between 3 and 16 years (n = 40) were invited to participate. The cognitive and motor skills were evaluated using validated tests: Wechsler Preschool and Prim

Distinguishing between vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease by means of the WAIS: a meta-analysis.

This study was intended to, meta-analytically, review whether the subtests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale are useful in differentiating between vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease. We expected the Alzheimer's disease group to outperform the vascular dementia group on those subtests that require executive functions, whereas inferior performance of the Alzheimer's disease patients was expected on memory tests. Two steps in the analysis were undertaken in an attempt to clarify this issue. The first step consisted of including all studies examining Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale

Persistent cognitive deficits in community-treated alcoholic men and women volunteering for research: limited contribution from psychiatric comorbidity.

OBJECTIVE: The contribution of psychiatric comorbidity to cognitive status was assessed in a sample of treatment-seeking alcoholics who met criteria to participate in studies of effects of chronic alcohol misuse on brain structure and cognition. METHOD: Alcoholic men (n = 43) and women (n = 21) who responded to notices about a research study were screened, clinically assessed and administered Wechsler Memory and Intelligence tests after 3 months of sobriety, on average. Cognitive performance was compared with that of an age-matched sample of healthy controls (n = 51). RESULTS: As a group, th

Fluid intelligence and naturalistic task impairments after focal brain lesions.

Classical executive tasks, such as Wisconsin card-sorting and verbal fluency, are widely used as tests of frontal lobe control functions. Since the pioneering work of Shallice and Burgess (1991), it has been known that complex, naturalistic tasks can capture deficits that are missed in these classical tests. Matching this finding, deficits in several classical tasks are predicted by loss of fluid intelligence, linked to damage in a specific cortical "multiple-demand" (MD) network, while deficits in a more naturalistic task are not. To expand on these previous results, we examined the effect of

Cognitive and behavioural findings in children with frontal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Frontal Lobe Epilepsy (FLE) is the second most frequent type of partial epilepsy and its onset is generally in childhood. Though cognitive and behavioural impairments have been described as co-morbid disorders in epilepsy, their extent in FLE, particularly in children, remains unknown. AIMS: In this study, we assess cognitive skills and behaviour in a cohort of paediatric FLE patients. METHODS: We measured the performance of 71 children with cryptogenic FLE on intelligence tests, neuropsychological tests, and behavioural questionnaires. Age-dependent normative values were used fo

Cognitive Reserve Proxies Do Not Differentially Account for Cognitive Performance in Patients with Focal Frontal and Non-Frontal Lesions.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive reserve (CR) suggests that premorbid efficacy, aptitude, and flexibility of cognitive processing can aid the brain's ability to cope with change or damage. Our previous work has shown that age and literacy attainment predict the cognitive performance of frontal patients on frontal-executive tests. However, it remains unknown whether CR also predicts the cognitive performance of non-frontal patients. METHOD: We investigated the independent effect of a CR proxy, National Adult Reading Test (NART) IQ, as well as age and lesion group (frontal vs. non-frontal) on measures of e

IQ is irrelevant to the definition of learning disabilities.

The purpose of this article was to examine the logic and the empirical data supporting the proposition that intelligence tests are not necessary for the definition of a learning disability. Four assumptions of the use of IQ test scores in the definition of learning disabilities were examined. These assumptions were (a) IQ tests measure intelligence; (b) intelligence and achievement are independent, and the presence of a learning disability will not affect IQ scores; (c) IQ scores predict reading, and children with low IQ scores should be poor readers; and (d) reading disabled children with dif

Untargeted metabolic analysis in dried blood spots reveals metabolic signature in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is characterized by a well-defined microdeletion and is associated with increased risk of neurodevelopmental phenotypes including autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and intellectual impairment. The typically deleted region in 22q11.2DS contains multiple genes with the potential of altering metabolism. Deficits in metabolic processes during early brain development may help explain the increased prevalence of neurodevelopmental phenotypes seen in 22q11.2DS. However, relatively little is known about the metabolic impact of the 22q11.2 deletion, while such in

Cognitive dysfunction in homeless adults: a systematic review.

Homelessness is associated with multiple adversities that might impact upon brain function. We performed a review of published work to assess evidence of cognitive dysfunction among adults who are homeless. Despite liberal inclusion criteria only seventeen publications were identified, these describing eighteen samples mainly from the USA. Although the total number of individuals studied is small (about 3300) and the samples are heterogeneous, most studies indicate a considerable burden of cognitive dysfunction among homeless people. Such dysfunction might be expected to impact upon their abil

Operational intelligence and school problems measured by Piagetian tasks and Rhode Island Pupil Identification Scale.

To explore the relations between operational intelligence rated on several Piagetian tasks and school learning problems identified by the Rhode Island Pupil Identification Scale by Novack, Bonaventura, and Merenda we assumed that Piagetian performances would allow predicting learning problems of first graders. 38 pupils were evaluated by three teachers, who were asked to complete the Rhode Island scale. Then the same children were individually given 8 Piagetian tests (including conservation and logical tasks) by an examiner who had no information about the pupils' other scores. Analysis showed

[Results of intelligence investigations in civil pilots with atherosclerotic changes in cerebral vessels].

Intelligence was evaluated in 73 normal civil pilots (control) and 70 with atherosclerotic cerebral vessels including 23 men with atheromas. Intelligence was evaluated with the use of computerized EPI (Gorbov's modification). Pilots with cerebral atherosclerosis tended to slightly decrease mean IQ values in comparison with the normal; IQ values remained high enough to attest professional efficiency. Atheromas did not impact results of the numerical (IQ2) and verbal (IQ3) tests. Hemodynamically negligible stable atheromas did not disturb cognitive functions of the pilots and, therefore, they we
