Considering the importance of mother's support in the adaptation of a sexually abused child, it is relevant to determine if the mothers and children involved in an intergenerational cycle of child sexual victimization differ from dyads in which only the child has been abused. The purpose of this study was to compare mother-child dyads with sexually abused children according to whether the mother had herself been victim of child sexual abuse. The sample included 87 dyads with sexually abused children aged 3-18 years old and their mothers (44 reporting maternal and child abuse), followed by soci

BACKGROUND: Chinese family structure has undergone tremendous changes over the past few decades. Moreover, the association of the intergenerational structure with depression remains controversial.
AIMS: This study aimed to find out the association of the intergenerational structure and the onset of depressive symptoms among Chinese middle-aged and older adults.
METHODS: This study included 4,868 participants of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), who were enrolled in 2011 without depressive symptoms and followed up at least once later in 2013, 2015, 2018, and 2020. T

The psychology literature concerning Jewish children hidden during World War II appeared in 1991 and was predominantly American and Israeli. Nevertheless, few studies consider the specific and complex situation of the "hidden children." The present study broaches this theme. The aim of this research is to show the consequences of the cumulate trauma in adults whose trauma occurred when they were children; it also aims to show how the subjects cope with the trauma. This research used a qualitative methodology. A series of semistructured interviews on personal and psychological history was condu

BACKGROUND: The lasting impact of parents' socioeconomic status on their children's social trajectories and health is well-established, but do such intergenerationally transmitted inequalities persist also into the third generation? This study investigates the importance of parental and grandparental earnings for young men's body mass index (BMI) and cognitive ability at military conscription.
METHODS: The database used was UBCoS Multigen, which combines existing data on an Uppsala cohort born 1915-29 with information on several subsequent generations. We analysed young men in the third gener

This study analyzes structural forces affecting state patterns of parental presence within grandparent-grandchild coresidence by testing demographic, social change, policy environment, and social problems models. The project combines published state-level data with the 1970, 1980, and 1990 Census Public Use Microdata Samples. While factors differentially affect the proportion of children living in each household structure, coresidence seems to be encouraged by social contexts in which people are poor, the middle generation is likely to die, and which have higher rates of births to teens. BACKGROUND: As delayed parenthood becomes a global demographic norm, understanding the biological consequences of advanced parental age or APrA (≥35 years in mothers; ≥40 years in fathers) is a critical geroscience priority. This shift represents a significant public health challenge, as parental senescence dictates implications far beyond immediate fertility. APrA is a key determinant of offspring healthspan, linked to increased risks of congenital anomalies, premature mortality, neurodevelopmental and metabolic dysfunction, as well as neurodegenerative diseases. This inherited biological leg

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the psychological reactions of North American offspring of Holocaust survivors (OHS) following the October 7 Hamas attack in Israel and the rise in antisemitism. Previous research demonstrates intergenerational transmission in OHS. Despite mixed findings, the most consistent observations demonstrate sensitivity to stress-related reactions, especially when encountering circumstances that bear symbolic associations to the Holocaust. It was hypothesized that the events following the October 7 attack might be associated with an increase in psychological distress amon

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of childhood aggression and social withdrawal on adolescent health risk behaviors and adult health outcomes, and to examine the transfer of health risk to preschool offspring. This was a prospective, longitudinal, and intergenerational study of 114 mothers from disadvantaged neighborhoods, who were identified in childhood as being highly aggressive and/or withdrawn or with low scores on these 2 behavioral risk dimensions, and their preschool offspring aged 1 to 6 years old. The health histories of mothers (adolescent health risk behavior, h

OBJECTIVE: A plethora of studies have unequivocally established the profound significance of harmonious familial relationships on the psychological well-being of the elderly. In this study, we elucidate the intergenerational relationships, probing the association between frequent interactions or encounters with their children and the incidence of depression in old age.
METHODOLOGY: We employed a retrospective cross-sectional study design, sourcing our data from the 2018 wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). To identify cases of depression, we utilized the 10-ite

This brief report provides a first look at self-reported instances of elder abuse by a sample of people 60 years and older living in Qazvin, Iran. Six hundred community-dwelling persons, drawn from the registry files of each health center in Qazin, completed questionnaires during April to October 2012. At least 80% of the participants reported experiencing some form of psychological abuse, financial abuse, and/or neglect at least once during a 2-month period. Physical and sexual abuse were rarely reported. Despite a strong Iranian cultural emphasis on respect for elders, the self-reporting of

The intracellular symbiont Wolbachia, which is widespread among insects, may induce cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) between hosts with different infection statuses. Increasing evidence indicates that symbiotic bacteria can influence host reproduction, metabolism, and other biological processes by modulating non-coding small RNAs. However, it is still unclear how Wolbachia-induced CI affects the offspring reproduction. In this study, using Drosophila melanogaster as a model system, small RNA and transcriptome sequencing were conducted on the reproductive systems of the offspring resulting from

Population ageing is an emerging public health priority that extends beyond medical care to include social inclusion, caregiving and community participation, particularly in rural settings. India is undergoing a rapid demographic transition, with a growing elderly population facing challenges related to social isolation, declining family support and limited access to age-friendly services. In response, the Enhancing Living Experiences of the Elderly initiative was implemented across 100 villages in the rural Wardha district to promote healthy, active and dignified ageing through self-care and

Dimefluthrin (DIM), a widely used pyrethroid insecticide, and microcystin-LR (MC-LR), a potent cyanotoxin produced by harmful algal blooms, are both frequently detected in aquatic environments. However, the potential combined effects of these two contaminants, particularly regarding intergenerational toxicity, remain largely unexplored. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the intergenerational effects of chronic parental co-exposure to DIM and MC-LR in zebrafish. Adult zebrafish were exposed to DIM and MC-LR, alone or in combination, for 160 days. A panel of phenotypic, histological, biochemic

Although child wellbeing is known to be negatively affected by gambling, relatively little is known about the specific harms experienced by children exposed to parental gambling problems. The current study aimed to better understand gambling harm directly attributed to regular parental gambling in key areas of child wellbeing: financial, psychological, interpersonal wellbeing and intergenerational transmission of problem gambling. Using data from a national survey of Australian adults exposed to parental gambling under the age of 18 (n = 211), the results show that parental gambling was relate

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper was to conduct a review of the studies published between 2018 and 2022 to investigate radiation-related effects in the offspring of human individuals exposed to ionizing radiation.
METHODS: The search identified 807 publications, from which 9 studies were selected for detailed analysis to examine for effects in children whose parents were exposed to various types and doses of radiation.
RESULTS: The review does not yield substantial evidence supporting intergenerational effects of radiation exposure in humans. However, caution is required when interpreting

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization's intrinsic capacity (IC) framework shifts focus from disease to functional ageing. Despite education's role in health, the impact of intergenerational educational mobility (IEM) on IC trajectories remains understudied. We aimed to examine the cross-national association between IEM and IC, its effect on biological ageing rates, and underlying mechanisms.
METHODS: We analysed harmonised longitudinal data from five nationally representative cohorts: China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, Health and Retirement Study (USA), Survey of Health, Agei
