[An initial lack of knowledge of the perineal anatomy does not influence the learning of intermittent self-catheterization in women].

AIM: To evaluate the impact of female perineal anatomy knowledge on the success of a first learning of intermittent self-catheterization (ISC). METHODS: Thirty subjects benefited from educational diagnosis, training and follow-up during 2 visits in a neuro-urology department. Three knowledge anatomical tests were carried out: a freehand drawing, then a diagram to be annotated and a self-location of the following 6 structures (labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, urethral meatus, vaginal orifice, anus) as well as a physiological knowledge test. A correction was made after annotating the diagr

Yang-Monti's Catheterizable Stoma in Children.

BACKGROUND: In 1981, Mitrofanoff described a procedure to create a continent urinary stoma for clean intermittent catheterization. Since then several procedures have been described including Yang-Monti ileovesicostomy for effective catheterization. OBJECTIVES: We report on our experience from the use of Monti's procedure in children at our center. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Children < 18 years of age undergoing urinary diversion/reconstruction with Yang-Monti's procedure for congenital conditions or neuropathic bladder formed the study group. All these children, post-operatively were taught clean

Use of hydrophilic-coated urethral catheters in management of acute urinary retention.

OBJECTIVES: Acute urinary retention (AUR) is a painful subacute emergency that is frequency seen in the general practice of urology. Urethral catheterization to drain the bladder can usually be performed successfully, safely, and with minimal discomfort using standard balloon retention catheters. In a small percentage of cases, however, abnormal urethral anatomy precludes passage of catheters of any size. In these situations, the urologist has a variety of more invasive and complex tools available for draining the bladder. With the introduction of hydrophilic catheters and their prominent use

Sigmoid neobladder in women after radical cystectomy.

PURPOSE: Neobladder reconstruction using an intestinal segment is the common procedure of choice in men after cystectomy. Recently this procedure has been extended to women. We present our surgical and functional experience with the sigmoid neobladder in women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 11 women 49 to 74 years old (mean age plus or minus standard deviation 60 +/- 8.5) with transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder underwent lower urinary tract reconstruction with a modified sigmoid neobladder after nerve and urethral support sparing cystectomy. After at least 3 months voiding pattern

Ureteral Rupture Caused by a Suprapubic Catheter in a Male Patient With Spinal Cord Injury: A Case Report.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) may lead to urinary system disturbances. Patients with SCI usually have neurogenic bladder, and treatment optionss for this condition include clean intermittent catheterization and a permanent indwelling urethral or suprapubic catheter. Complications of catheterization include urinary tract infection, calculi, urinary tract injury, bladder contraction, bladder spasm, renal dysfunction, bladder cancer, and so forth. To the best of our knowledge, ureteral rupture is an unusual complication of catheterization, and ureteral rupture has been rarely reported in SCI patients.

Intestinocystoplasty in combination with clean intermittent catheterization in the management of vesical dysfunction.

Intestinocystoplasty in combination with clean intermittent catheterization has been used in the management of 60 young patients with bladder dysfunction. Of the patients 39 (65 per cent) had the primary diagnosis of myelomeningocele, 8 had sacral agenesis, 3 had spinal cord tumors and 1 had spinal cord trauma. The remaining 9 patients had either congenital, surgical or traumatic loss of all or a large portion of the bladder. Of the 60 patients 30 had undergone prior urinary diversion, while the remaining 30 were considered failures with management by clean intermittent catheterization and med

Residual urinary volume and urinary tract infection, a life threatening illness: a case report.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease that demyelinates the central nervous system causing progressive disability. The urodynamics of MS patients is an important consideration because these patients are susceptible to acute urinary bladder retention associated with a high fever. Treatment should include irrigation using a Foley catheter and an irrigation syringe to remove residual urine and sediment from the neurogenic bladder, intravenous fluid resuscitation, bacteriological analysis of the residual urine, and admission to an Intensive Care Unit for further evaluation by a urolog

Bladder dysfunction due to Behçet's disease.

Behçet's disease is a multiple disorder in which urogenital involvement mainly consists of genital aphthous ulcers, epididymitis, urethritis and recurrent cystitis. We report 2 cases of neurogenic bladder due to Behçet's disease. Both cases showed detrusor hyperreflexia and detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia. One case has been managed by twice-daily intravesical oxybutynin treatment (5 mg/10 ml) and clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) 7 times/day, and the other case has been managed by CIC 6 times/day.

Obstructive uropathy in a female infant with a single kidney: Unmasking congenital urethral stenosis: A case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Congenital urethral stenosis (CUS) in female infants is an exceptionally rare urological anomaly. When combined with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) and a solitary functional kidney, it presents a significant risk for renal deterioration. Early recognition is essential to avoid irreversible damage, especially in complex cases with multiple comorbidities. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 33-month-old female born prematurely at 26 weeks, with a history of omphalocele repair, ventriculitis, retinopathy of prematurity, and a chromosomal abnormality. She presente

Clean intermittent self-catheterization: a 12-year followup.

We studied retrospectively 75 patients who performed clean intermittent self-catheterization for a mean of 7 years (maximum 12 years). Most of the patients had neuropathic bladder dysfunction and 92% were continent. Chronic or recurrent urinary tract infections were present in 42% of the patients. Although the upper urinary tract was well preserved in the majority of the patients regular screening for silent hydronephrosis and/or asymptomatic reflux proved to be necessary. Complications occurred in 15 patients, with a urethral pathological condition being the most frequent complication in our

An update on prevention and treatment of catheter-associated urinary tract infections.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Catheter-related urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most important nosocomial infections. This review summarizes the latest advances in the field of catheter care and the management of catheter-associated UTIs. RECENT FINDINGS: The most efficient methods to prevent catheter-associated UTIs are to avoid unnecessary catheterizations and to remove catheters as soon as possible. The use of different reminder systems and implementation of infection control programs can effectively decrease catheter-associated UTIs, although their introduction can be challenging. There

[Appendicovesicostomy (Mitrofanoff procedure) in children: Long-term follow-up and specific complications].

OBJECTIVE: In children, intermittent catheterization by appendicovesicostomy according to Mitrofanoff is an interesting alternative to the urethral approach. Objective of the study was to evaluate the rate of appendicovesicostomy's specific complications. METHOD: From 1997 to 2017, data on children treated and followed for an appendicovesicostomy in an academic institution were collected retrospectively. Rates of surgical complications specifically encountered on appendicovesicostomy, time of onset, frequency, and necessity of surgical reinterventions have been reported. RESULTS: Thirty-four

Surgical management of urinary incontinence in children with neurogenic sphincteric incompetence.

PURPOSE: There are many alternatives for the surgical treatment of children with neurogenic sphincteric incompetence. However, there is no consensus regarding appropriate evaluation and long-term management in these patients. We critically reviewed the literature and compare the outcomes of each technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A MEDLINE search was performed to select all relevant peer reviewed publications since 1966. In addition, the bibliography of each article was examined for additional published resources. The results of each technique were compared in 7 objective categories, including

EAU/ESPU guidelines on the management of neurogenic bladder in children and adolescent part I diagnostics and conservative treatment.

BACKGROUND: In childhood, the most common reason for a neurogenic bladder is related to spinal dysraphism, mostly myelodysplasia. AIMS: Herein, we present the EAU/ESPU guidelines in respect to the diagnostics, timetable for investigations and conservative management including clean intermittent catheterization (CIC). MATERIAL AND METHODS: After a systematic literature review covering the period 2000 to 2017, the ESPU/EUAU guideline for neurogenic bladder underwent an update. RESULTS: The EAU/ESPU guideline panel advocates a proactive approach. In newborns with spina bifida, CIC should be st

Defining and advancing education and conservative therapies of underactive bladder.

In contrast to other forms of voiding dysfunction, underactive bladder (UAB) has traditionally received little research or educational attention. This is changing as our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of detrusor dysfunction and other forms of underactive bladder improves. In addition, the impact of UAB on patient symptoms, general and health-related quality of life, and caregiver burden are becoming more recognized. However, there remains a paucity of data on the subject, and an extensive need for additional research and education on the topic. This paper explores the current stat

Transurethral laser lithotripsy using the Mitrofanoff urethral conduit for bladder stones: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The Mitrofanoff (appendicovesicostomy) procedure is a contraindicated urinary modification that maintains urinary continence by forming a flap-valve mechanism at the site of anastomosis between the appendage and bladder wall, which is used as a guide for urinary drainage. This technique has been used by intermittent self-catheterization patients who have difficulty voiding from the native urethra or in cases where voiding from the abdominal wall would improve quality of life. However, the risk of stone formation is high due to intermittent urinary catheterization using the Mitrofan
