Extending the quest for significance: A dynamic and intersubjective perspective on romantic love.

We concur with the authors' hypothesis that romantic love serves the quest for significance. However, we propose that (a) this quest also involves an intersubjective process of meaning co-construction within the couple and (b) love should be conceptualized as a dynamic process through which partners mutually shape and transform each other's sense of significance over time.

Gambling disorder in the context of couple relationships: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, Gambling Disorder (GD) has gained increasing attention in psychological and neuroscientific research due to its significant behavioral, social, and economic consequences. GD shares core features with substance addictions, including craving, tolerance, and withdrawal, and is influenced by a complex interplay of genetic, neurobiological, and environmental factors. The couple's context plays a pivotal role in both the development and management of GD, as dysfunctional relational dynamics can perpetuate the disorder, leading to instability, chronic stress, financial di

The dependent personality and interpersonal problems.

At the core of the dependent personality disorder lies an excessive reliance on other people for support, direction, and nurturance. However, because of their interpersonal style, many patients high in dependency have difficulties establishing and maintaining close interpersonal relationships. The present study examined interpersonal problems related to the dependent personality disorder. The relationships between dependency and interpersonal problems were examined in 43 adult psychiatric inpatients and 66 nonpatient adults. All subjects were assessed for social functioning in terms of social

Use of item response theory to develop a return to work measure for acquired brain injury: The employment feasibility checklist.

BACKGROUND: The 2001 Feasibility Evaluation Checklist (FEC) is an assessment of work readiness for individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI). It establishes the integrity of basic safety, productivity, and interpersonal factors in neurorehabilitation and vocational settings. This study represents an effort to further develop the FEC to increase its clinical utility. OBJECTIVE: To redesign the FEC by conducting Item Response Theory (IRT) analyses on the study's results and combining those mathematical calibrations with clinical expert judgement. The result will be a new measure for use in c

Narcissistic Personality Disorder: Are Psychodynamic Theories and the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders Finally Going to Meet?

Narcissistic Personality Disorder is the new borderline personality disorder of our current era. There have been recent developments on narcissism that are certainly worthwhile examining. Firstly, relational and intersubjective psychoanalysts have been rethinking the underlying concepts of narcissism, focusing on the development of self and relations to others. Secondly, in the DSM-5, the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) was presented for a dimensional evaluation of the severity of personality disorder pathology. The combined dimensional and trait conceptualization of N

An evaluation of the construct validity of the Adult Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire.

Rejection sensitivity (RS), the predisposition to defensively expect, readily perceive, and react strongly to interpersonal rejection (Downey & Feldman, 1996; Feldman & Downey, 1994), may be a transdiagnostic trait associated with a range of psychiatric symptoms and psychosocial dysfunction. Valid and reliable assessment of vulnerability factors is essential for individualized treatment and improving clinical outcomes. Limited research has examined the factor structure of the predominantly used self-report measure of RS, the Adult Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire (A-RSQ; Berenson et al., 20

Dimensional assessment of self- and interpersonal functioning in adolescents: implications for DSM-5's general definition of personality disorder.

Central to the proposed DSM-5 general definition of personality disorder (PD) are features of self- and interpersonal functioning. The Social Cognition and Object Relations Scale-Global Rating Method (SCORS-G) is a coding system that assesses eight dimensions of self- and relational experience that can be applied to narrative data or used by clinically experienced observers to quantify observations of patients in ongoing psychotherapy. This study aims to evaluate the relationship of SCORS-G dimensions to personality pathology in adolescents and their incremental validity for predicting multipl

Perfectionistic Self-Presentation, Socially Prescribed Perfectionism, Self-Oriented Perfectionism, Interpersonal Hopelessness, and Suicidal Ideation in U.S. Adults: Reexamining the Social Disconnection Model.

OBJECTIVE: Research has linked perfectionism to increased suicidal ideation (SI), although less is known regarding the mechanisms that explain this relation. The Perfectionism Social Disconnection Model (PSDM) posits that interpersonal aspects of perfectionism cause interpersonal problems (e.g., hostility, loneliness) which in turn increase a person's risk for experiencing SI. The present study aimed to replicate and extend previous findings related to the PSDM and SI using measures of interpersonal hopeless and general hopelessness. METHOD: Tenets of the PSDM were tested in a sample of 313 U

Interpersonal processes in social phobia.

Social phobia is a condition in which anxiety impairs the person's ability to relate to others. Here, we draw on concepts from interpersonal theory to examine the literature on the role of interpersonal processes in creating and maintaining this disorder. Studies that examine interpersonal interactions with significant others and strangers are reviewed. We next consider topics of particular relevance to relationship impairment, such as the effect of anxiety on cognitive processing of social information, and the social developmental pathways to social phobia. The impact of interpersonal factors

Therapeutic alliance development in physical therapy for people with serious mental illness: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Physical therapy (PT) has been demonstrated to be beneficial for people with serious mental illness (SMI). Literature in this field is emerging and growing rapidly. However, little is known about how therapeutic relationships are formed in PT for people with SMI. Expanding our knowledge of how people with serious mental illness perceive and experience their relationships with physical therapists, and how these perceptions impact the development of therapeutic alliance (TA), may inform the development of strategies to enhance TA. The purpose of this study was to explore how people with

Group psychotherapy for parents of patients with borderline personality disorder: Βasic assumptions and group containing function.

Patients with borderline personality disorders (BPD) have great difficulties with interpersonal relations. Their extreme difficulties with interpersonal relations are illustrated in psychic family interaction. Parents become the recipients of conflicts and patient's aggressive behaviour, while family stress increases due to suicidal tendency, self-injuries and substance abuse. The current report presents the introduction of group psychotherapy for parents of young adult patients with BPD, treated in a special unit of personality disorders at Eginition Hospital. The aim is, through the parallel

Diagnosing borderline patients with a semistructured interview.

As a part of an ongoing effort to provide operational criteria for a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder, the Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines (DIB) has been developed. The DIB is an hour-long, semistructured interview that evaluates five areas of borderline pathologic features--social adaptation, impulse/action patterns. affects, psychotic symptoms, and interpersonal relations. The DIBs were administered to 70 hospitalized patients and compared with clinical diagnoses made at the time of discharge. The DIB discriminates borderline patients from others, especially from schizophren

Distant and Distressed: Interpersonal Problems in Anxiety and Depression.

OBJECTIVES: Interpersonal functioning has a complex, bidirectional relationship with mental disorders such as anxiety and depression. The Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP) assesses aspects of interpersonal functioning, including general interpersonal distress and interpersonal styles. In this study, we aimed to better understand how these aspects relate to anxiety and depression by (1) comparing interpersonal distress and style in individuals with current, past, and no lifetime anxiety and/or depression, and (2) examining how interpersonal styles relate to the comorbidity and chronicit

Domesticating esoteric Buddhism: lay women, Foxin Jing practice, and somatic authority in contemporary China.

This study examines how lay women engage with, adapt, and transmit the heart-mind esoteric Buddhist tradition known as Foxin Jing () in contemporary China. Previous scholarship on Chinese esoteric Buddhism has predominantly focused on issues related to legitimacy, lineage, institutional power, and master-disciple relations. However, there has been a relative lack of focus on the role played by women in maintaining esoteric Buddhist practice via the domestic, affective, and embodied dimensions of religion. Drawing on qualitative research with twenty lay women practitioners, this study shows tha

Modeling Nonstationary Emotion Dynamics in Dyads using a Time-Varying Vector-Autoregressive Model.

Emotion dynamics are likely to arise in an interpersonal context. Standard methods to study emotions in interpersonal interaction are limited because stationarity is assumed. This means that the dynamics, for example, time-lagged relations, are invariant across time periods. However, this is generally an unrealistic assumption. Whether caused by an external (e.g., divorce) or an internal (e.g., rumination) event, emotion dynamics are prone to change. The semi-parametric time-varying vector-autoregressive (TV-VAR) model is based on well-studied generalized additive models, implemented in the so

Borderline personality disorder.

Caretakers are often intimidated or alienated by patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), compounding the clinical challenges posed by the severe morbidity, high social costs and substantial prevalence of this disorder in many health-care settings. BPD is found in ∼1.7% of the general population but in 15-28% of patients in psychiatric clinics or hospitals and in a large proportion of individuals seeking help for psychological problems in general health facilities. BPD is characterized by extreme sensitivity to perceived interpersonal slights, an unstable sense of self, intense and

Associations of early childhood adversities with mental disorders, psychological functioning, and suitability for psychotherapy in adulthood.

Childhood adversities frequently precede adulthood depression and anxiety. Yet, how they impact needed treatment duration, type or focus in these common disorders, is unclear. For developing more individualized and precise interventions, we investigated whether specific early adversities associate with patients' distinct psychiatric problems, psychological vulnerabilities, and suitability for psychotherapy. A total of 221 depressed and anxious adult outpatients (excluding psychotic, severe personality, bipolar, and substance abuse disorders) referred from community, student, occupational, and

Predictors of physical assault victimization: findings from the National Survey of Adolescents.

Exposure to interpersonal victimization during childhood and adolescence is prevalent and has been found to be associated with negative physical and mental health outcomes. The present study examined the relations between childhood violence exposure and mental health on subsequent exposure to new physical assault in young adults using longitudinal nationally representative, prospective data from the initial (Wave I) and follow-up interviews (Wave II) of the National Survey of Adolescents (NSA). Among the 1,753 participants who completed both assessment time points, 15.8% reported a new physica
