BACKGROUND: Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed operation worldwide. Prophylaxis against postoperative endophthalmitis and inflammation currently includes perioperative, patient-administered instillation of topical antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops in the US, Europe and Latin America. As patients can face challenges with adherence to topical drops for self-instillation, injected drugs may offer a solution. Intracameral antibiotic injection is superior to drops for endophthalmitis prevention in manual small incision surgery (MSICS) and phacoemulsification eyes. Subconjunctival

PURPOSE: To study the in vivo efficiency of lentiviral vectors in delivering genes to the trabecular meshwork (TM) of rodent eyes.
METHODS: Lentiviral vectors were constructed using the elongation factor 1 alpha (EF-1alpha) promoter driving expression of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene. The viral construct was injected intracamerally through the peripheral cornea into the anterior chamber of live rodent eyes. Several variables were evaluated to determine the optimal conditions for TM cell transduction. These parameters included viral concentration, injection volume, needle rotation,

We evaluated the feasibility of delivering a gene into monkey eyes using a replication-competent herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 ribonucleotide reductase mutant (hrR3) expressing the Escherichia coli lacZ gene. To determine the efficiency of in vitro HSV-mediated gene transfer, cultured human trabecular meshwork (HTM) and human ciliary muscle (HCM) cells were infected with hrR3 and beta-galactosidase activity was measured histochemically. Six cynomolgus monkey eyes received viral injections into the anterior chamber (2 x 10(7) pfu) and/or the vitreous (5 x 10(7) pfu), and the distribution of

Primary open-angle glaucoma is a prevalent type of degenerative eye disease that results in lifelong blindness, and its critical pathogenic cause is trabecular meshwork (TM) dysfunction or decreased TM cellularity. Considering that TM develops from neural crest cells (NCCs), we investigate the potential of human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived NCCs transplantation for TM regeneration. We used a chemically defined method to induce the differentiation of NCCs and injected 1.0 × 106 hESC-derived NCCs combined with 100 μmol/L Y-27632 into the anterior chamber of rabbit. INTRODUCTION: Descemet's membrane detachment is a rare but serious complication following cataract surgery. Extensive detachments that affect the visual axis may result in poor vision and require penetrating corneal grafts. Some alternatives have been used to reattach Descemet's membrane: air bubble, transcorneal sutures and intracameral viscoelastic gel plus SF6 or C3F8 gas.
PURPOSE: To describe the use of non-expanding (16%) intracameral C3F8 to reattach Descemet's membrane, in six patients, following cataract surgery.
METHODS: The patient's mean age was 71.3 +/- 9.3. Four of the patients

PURPOSE: To describe a novel technique of amniotic membrane (AM) patch graft in the management of double chamber treatment after big-bubble deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK).
CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old male patient with advanced keratoconus underwent big-bubble DALK. Manual lamellar dissection was done due to failed big-bubble. First-day postoperative double chamber was detected. Air bubbling and SF6 injection were tried without any success. Double chamber resolved by fixation of AM transplantation patch graft (1 × 1 mm) over the Descemet's membrane perforation with fibrin glue.

The authors describe a Chinese boy presenting with recurrent retinoblastoma in combination with anterior chamber and vitreous seeding. After two cycles of intra-arterial chemotherapy combined with intracameral and intravitreal melphalan injections, the retinal tumor regressed. The seeds in the anterior chamber and vitreous body were invisible. After 12 months of follow-up, extraocular metastasis was not demonstrated and the retinal tumor was stable. The visual acuity of this patient remained 20/30.

CASE REPORT: A 22-year- old woman with an acute hydrops and Descemet membrane detachment was managed by intracameral air injection combined with multiple corneal stromal venting incisions for the drainage of intrastromal fluid. No intraoperative complications were encountered, and the intrastromal fluid was resolved over 2 weeks.
DISCUSSION: Acute corneal hydrops is a significant complication of keratoconus. If not treated, resolution usually occurs over a period of 2-4 months. The persistent oedema can cause complications, such as corneal neovascularisation, infection and corneal perforation
