BACKGROUND: Inuit women from Northern Québec have been shown to consume inadequate quantities of vitamin A. This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of blood vitamin A deficiency in newborns from 3 distinct populations of the province of Québec.
METHODS: 594 newborns were included in this study (375 Inuit newborns from northern Québec (Nunavik), 107 Caucasian and Native newborns from the Lower Northern Shore of the Saint-Lawrence River (LNS) and 112 newborns from Southern Québec where clinical vitamin A deficiency is uncommon). Mothers were recruited at delivery and vitamin A (reti

The Youth Solvent Addiction Program (YSAP) was established in 1996 in response to the misuse of volatile substances among First Nations and Inuit youth in Canada. This article outlines the role of Indigenous culture and its intersection with Western approaches to recovery in YSAP's operation of nine residential treatment centers for youth. Treatment practices and client outcome data are used to illustrate YSAP's approach. Limitations of the article are noted.

Northern regions of Canada have the highest reported incidence of childhood rickets in the country, yet this public health problem remains poorly described. The goal of this research was to explore the food and vitamin D supplementation experiences in pregnancy and infancy and examine associations with rickets diagnosis. Data were collected systematically through a retrospective chart review of Inuit children from 18 communities in Nunavut born from 2010-2013. Although most pregnant people reported consuming country food daily or weekly, one in three pregnant people reported being food insecur

The purpose of the study was to investigate the relative contributions of age, gender, ethnic background, and a history of middle ear disease on the amount of conductive hearing impairment among native and non-native audiology patients in the Canadian North. A second goal of the study was to determine risk factors for conductive hearing loss in the patients studied. Three ethnic groups were represented among the 3,094 patients: Inuit, American Indian, and non-native. Loglinear and logit statistical models were applied, and these data were best explained by a 3-way interaction of history of mid

Developing Canadian hydroelectric resources is a key component of North American plans for meeting future energy demands. Microbial production of the bioaccumulative neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg) is stimulated in newly flooded soils by degradation of labile organic carbon and associated changes in geochemical conditions. We find all 22 Canadian hydroelectric facilities being considered for near-term development are located within 100 km of indigenous communities. For a facility in Labrador, Canada (Muskrat Falls) with planned completion in 2017, we probabilistically modeled peak MeHg enrichm

We found a novel G-->A change at nucleotide -25 within the promoter of the CTSS gene encoding the elastase cathepsin S. The CTSS -25G/A polymorphism could be detected by digestion with endonuclease BfmI. The frequency of the CTSS -25A allele was 0.457 in Caucasians and 0.431 in Canadian Inuit. Because of the importance of the CTSS gene product in vascular matrix remodeling, this polymorphism may be useful in the study of associations with atherosclerosis and related phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: In changing northern ecosystems, understanding the mechanisms of transmission of zoonotic pathogens, including the coccidian parasite Toxoplasma gondii, is essential to protect the health of vulnerable animals and humans. As high-level predators and scavengers, foxes represent a potentially sensitive indicator of the circulation of T. gondii in environments where humans co-exist. The objectives of our research were to compare serological and molecular assays to detect T. gondii, generate baseline data on T. gondii antibody and tissue prevalence in foxes in northern Canada, and comp

Arctic char Salvelinus alpinus is an important cultural and subsistence resource for Inuit communities. Muscular infections by microsporidia were diagnosed for the first time in Arctic char originating from 2 different lakes in Nunavik (Quebec, Canada). The consumption of these infected fish was associated with digestive tract disorders in people. To better characterize microsporidiosis in these char populations, a cross-sectional study was conducted on 91 fish. The microsporidium was classified as a member of the Microsporidium collective genus by morphological evaluation and phylogenetic ana

With the first report of an HIV-positive Inuit in 1985 Greenland was considered a high risk area for a self-sustained heterosexual HIV-epidemic, due to high incidences of sexually transmitted diseases. In 1986 a national HIV-intervention programme began with two major aims: Firstly, improved STD treatment and incitation to change of sexual high-risk behaviour, secondly, close monitoring of HIV-antibody test activity, partner notification and repeated surveys of knowledge and sexual behaviour in selected populations. Very early the spread of HIV in Greenland became heterosexually transmitted an

Thirty-four infants (25 Inuit and 9 Caucasians) with protein-energy malnutrition and intractable diarrhea were treated with total parenteral nutrition (TNP) consisting of a casein hydrolysate, a soybean emulsion and dextrose. Initially peripheral veins were used in all the infants, and 22 were treated successfully without resort to a central venous catheter. The mean duration of treatment by the peripheral route was 29 days. Although mean energy intake and protein intake were high, weight gain was poor and growth continued at the prehospitalization percentiles. There were two deaths, both from

Labrador, a previously unsurveyed area of Canada, has been sampled for human intestinal parasites. Four hundred and one asymptomatic volunteers between 1 and 72 years of age, including Inuit, Naskapi and whites, were examined during the summer of 1977. They harboured: Entamoeba coli, E. histolytica, E. hartmanni, Giardia lamblia and Diphyllobothrium sp. The infection rates are considerably lower than those found in other studies of Northern Canadian communities.

SETTING: Consumption of raw game meats is important for Inuit health and well-being but may sometimes increase risk of exposure to parasites. In Nunavik, following trichinellosis outbreaks in the 1980s caused by raw walrus consumption, a diagnostic test was developed for the region and offered to all Inuit communities by 1997. Despite this prevention program, an important trichinellosis outbreak occurred in 2013, affecting 18 inhabitants of Inukjuak.
INTERVENTION: Because the classical outbreak investigation did not rapidly converge toward a common food source or specific event, a local respo

Sixteen beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) and fifteen ringed seals (Phoca hispida) from the western arctic region of Canada were examined for giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis. Intestinal contents from the rectum and colon were collected from animals slaughtered by Inuit hunters. A fluorescent monoclonal antibody identified Giardia sp. cysts in three of 15 (20%) seals. Thus, ringed seals are implicated as a potential reservoir for this zoonosis in the arctic.

Racism in Canada systematically marginalizes Indigenous communities, with invisibility emerging as a central mechanism of discrimination. This study examines how racial trauma manifests among Indigenous individuals, focusing on microaggressions, ethnic discrimination, and psychological distress. Invisibility-through erasure of identity, culture, and historical injustices-was a recurring theme in Indigenous experiences of racism, reinforcing exclusion and increasing trauma. A total of 196 Indigenous participants (64% First Nations, 26% Métis, 6% Inuit) across Canada were recruited via an online

In 2006, the Canadian Helicobacter Study Group identified Aboriginal communities among Canadian population groups most at risk of Helicobacter pylori-associated disease. The objective of this systematic review was to summarize what is known about the H pylori-associated disease burden in Canadian and related Arctic Aboriginal populations to identify gaps in knowledge. Six health literature databases were systematically searched to identify reports on H pylori prevalence in Canadian population groups, or any topic related to H pylori in Canadian Aboriginals, Alaska Natives or Aboriginals of oth

Cystic hydatid disease is caused by the parasite Echinococcus granulosus. Indigenous infections are seen among the Indians and Inuit. Man is an occasional intermediate host in whom the disease is manifested by the presence of one or more hydatid cysts, usually located in the liver or lung and rarely at other sites such as the breast, as in this case report. The cyst is usually asymptomatic; in this it case was discovered on routine mammography. On aspiration biopsy, 1 ml of clear fluid was removed, but there was a residual lump which was successfully excised.

Ringed seals (Pusa hispida) are a key food resource for Inuit communities in Nunavut, Canada, thus justifying the need for regular monitoring of environmental contaminants in these animals. The primary objective of this study was to determine the current levels of some non-essential trace elements, including cadmium (Cd), total mercury (THg), and methylmercury (MeHg), and of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in ringed seals of eastern Nunavut. Selenium (Se), an essential trace element, was also included because of its strong interaction with Hg. From 2

The prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii exposure in Inuit living in Nunavut (20%) is twice that of the US (11%); however, routes of exposure for Inuit communities in North America are unclear. Exposure to T. gondii in humans has been linked with consumption of raw or undercooked shellfish that can accumulate environmentally resistant oocysts. Bivalve shellfish, such as clams, are an important, nutritious, affordable and accessible source of food in many Northern Communities. To date, presence of T. gondii in clams in Northern Canada has not been reported. In this study, we tested for T. gondii pre

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) of the salivary gland is a rare squamous cell carcinoma. LEC commonly presents in the parotid and submandibular glands and rarely in the sublingual gland. While salivary gland LEC has a predilection for Inuit-Yupik and Chinese populations, few cases have been reported in the Hispanic population and none for sublingual glands in the English language literature. Here, we present the seventh case report in the English language literature for sublingual LEC and the first case observed in a Hispanic patient.
